Abitino’s Pizza to Offer $2.99 Sandwich Special in July

Abatinos Exterior

We’ve never found any particular reason to pay a visit to Abatino’s Pizza, which is a local slice chain with 6 locations around New York city including Terminal 8 at the JFK airport, and bears a striking resemblance to other non-noteworthy names, Sbarro, Famous Famiglia and the like. However, the location at 944 Eighth Ave (between 55th & 56th St) emailed us, asking to inform ML readers that they’ll be pricing all of their sandwiches at $2.99, all day on July 11th, 18th & 25th. Although the reviews on Yelp aren’t promising, if anyone’s tried the food here, please let us know in the comments if this $2.99 sandwich special is something to get excited about.

Food Truck Crackdown Confirmed by the Times: We've been covering the big food truck crackdown in Midtown for weeks now, but there is something extra disheartening about seeing it in the paper of record.  Today's New York Times devotes a full article to the news, complete with interviews of the Treats Truck and Rickshaw Dumpling.

Steve’s Ice Cream Is in Soft Opening Mode (aka Free!?)

Steve's

Yesterday yielded a big win for Midtown ice cream fans… Steve’s Ice Cream open its doors on 42nd Street (between 5th+Mad). For those of you not familiar with Steve’s, it’s an ice cream brand that originated in Massachusetts with mix-in pioneer Steve Herrell, but is now based out of Long Island. They’re all-natural, use local ingredients, and definitely fall on the fancier side of ice cream. But yesterday, today, and maybe tomorrow (?), you don’t need to worry about the fancy price because “soft opening” translates to “free-loaders engage.”

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Monique”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Monique, an admin who hates mushrooms but loves food trucks.

Name: Monique

Age: 26

Occupation: Admin Assistant by day, Food blogger by night

Where in Midtown do you Work?: My office is right across the street from Bryant Park.

Favorite Kind of Food: I love bacon. I mean, I love fruits and veggies….but I really love bacon. And dumplings.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: MUSHROOM ANYTHING

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: I’m a big food truck hound. I love Rickshaw, Wafels and Dinges, Schnitzel and Things, Big D’s Grub Truck…the list gets long. When I have the time and can splurge: SHAKE SHACK (on 44th & 8th). AHH, and I almost forgot Chef Samir’s Comme Ci Comme Ca truck!! The food is RIDICULOUS and I always forget to give these guys love. They’re getting pushed out of their 38th and Bway spot…so don’t forget to check these dudes out.

Is 46th & Vandy the New Hotness?: On the ML Twitter Tracker today... Crisp on Wheels is hoping to be on 49th & 6th, Red Hook Lobster is on 47th and Lex, Wafels & Dinges is on 52nd btw. Lex+3rd, Sweetery is on 46th & 6th, and Korilla is parked on 46th & Vanderbilt- where Bian Dang parked yesterday.  Let's hope this doesn't ruin the spot for Jiannetto's, who has been parking near there for years.

If You Like Buns, Check Out Oriental Noodle Shop

Oriental Noodle Shop The other day while sitting in the office typing away, I had a sudden craving for Chinese food. Now I just recently started a new job so I’m not too familiar with the area but I did know that Hop Won was just a few blocks away (on 45th btw. Lex+3rd). And since Hop Won is the sister restaurant of Hing Won (which I’ve been to and liked a lot), I knew I could get a quality lunch.  Though once I got there I couldn’t help but be drawn into Oriental Noodle Shop (yes the one with the guy eating a bowl of noodles while wearing a straw hat).

Free Thai Iced Tea Alert: Now through the end of July anybody who buys a bundle- that's one main and one side- from Dee Daa Balanced Thai (on 44th btw Lex+3rd) will receive a free iced tea of their choice. Choices include Rosella, Lemongrass, Bael Fruit and traditional Thai Iced Tea.

Cer Te Says DOH is Causing the “McDonaldization of NYC”

Despite being one of our favorite places in all of Midtown for sandwiches, Cer Te (on 55th btw. 5+6th) has been battling  poor Department of Health scores ever since the city started hanging letter grades on the windows.  They dressed up their “B” back in September, and last week a tipster pointed out that the B is now a C.  And they’re hiding it all the way at the bottom of the door.

Two lunchers decided to take them to task in the comments, and Cer Te responded with this…

Schnitzel & Things Makes a Non-Schnitzified Sandwich!?

Schnitzel & Things

Now that my new office is just a few steps away from the Schnitzel & Things’ shop (3rd btw. 45th+46th), I don’t have to run around the city looking for the truck (WIN!) It also means my intake of fried goodness will jump exponentially. When you have a storefront, there’s definitely more room for you to play around with the menu, so when Oleg and family opened their new place (on 3rd Ave. btw. 45+46th) they added few new items to the menu including 1 non-schnitzified item on the menu, the grilled ginger chicken (I know the bratwurst isn’t technically schnitzified either but they do deep fry it). The grilled ginger chicken has always been on my mind and finally I got the chance to try it.
