Midtown Lunch

Back in August, Brian posted about Comme Ci, Comme Ça Truck’s new tilapia special. At the time the dish was served “over a bed of greens and soft rotini pasta, that’s been tossed with cherry tomatoes, black olives, fresh basil, and crispy pieces of cooked tuna fish” and was decidedly Mediterranean in flavor. Even with all the moving of spots and excessive ticketing, the Comme Ci, Comme Ca Truck has been continually offering weekly specials since June. For example last week Chef Samir served grilled tilapia over pasta, and he is still serving it this week. I’ve been thinking about these guys since their recent Vendy Award nomination leak and so I found myself in line at their colorful lime green truck ready to dig in.

Got super excited when I saw this on the Twitter Tracker this morning… thinking that the Vendy Award finalists had been announced. No such luck though! It appears as if the Comme Ci Comme Ca truck jumped the gun a bit on the announcement. The Street Vendor Project makes videos about each of the vendors, so the finalists always find out a bit before we do. If it does turn out to be true, a big hearty congrats to Chef Samir! (I guess nobody said anything to him about keeping it a secret?)

Oh, and if you haven’t bought your tickets yet for the September 24th event at Governor’s Island you might want to get on that. There are less than 40 General Admission tickets left. Scratch that. General Admission tickets are now sold out! But there are still early admission tickets left ($145) and sponsorship packages come with tickets, making sponsoring the Vendys not much more expensive than buying tickets directly (plus you get to support a great cause.)

Chef Samir is mixing things up at the Comme Ci, Comme Ça Truck this past week, adding some specials. The truck’s sandwiches have been getting a lot of love in the forums and for vegetarians or folks looking for something on the lighter side on this brutally hot day, the salads and the Bademjan wrap should fit the bill. Several months ago, I reported seeing that the Comme Ci Comme Ça Truck had added over rice specials to their Mediterranean influenced Moroccan menu. I’ve been a fan of their chicken couscous, but on a recent trip I noticed that all five of the people in front of me ordered chicken over rice and I had to see how they’d pull off this midtown lunch staple. After a bumpy start, the Comme Ci, Comme Ça Truck seems to be finding their grove on 56th and Lex. A recent visit revealed some new menu additions, including an over rice menu and some new sauces.

After a series of unfortunate events, including an operation for Chef Samir and a bad burn for his sous chef, the Comme Ci, Comme Ça Truck is back in action. When I saw the good news on the ML Twitter Tracker at lunchtime yesterday I knew exactly where I was headed for lunch.

It seems like it’s been forever, but Chef Samir is fully recovered from his operation and the Comme Ci, Comme Ça Moroccan truck is back on 54th and Lexington today! He’s celebrating his return with free hot mango or mint tea. Don’t forget to try the delicious cigars and kofta sandwiches.
