Midtown Happy Hour: Rodeo Bar is Proof We Will Go Anywhere for Free Nachos

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Midtown Happy Hour: Rodeo Bar

Rodeo Bar is pretty far outside the ML boundaries (3rd Ave. btw. 26+27th) but when I heard they had free nachos and chicken at happy hour, I knew it was going to be worth the trek. Plus, due to the recession they have extended their happy hour to 9pm! That means that those of us who work in Midtown proper can make it down there and revel in their drink specials, even if we get off work late. Included in the deal are $4 drafts, $7 strawberry or lime margaritas (frozen or on the rocks), daily shot specials and a whiskey shot with a PBR back for $7. The frozen margaritas come out of a big slushy machine —that’s how popular they are, and you can order your drink mixed with half strawberry, half lime.

Ask ML: “How Safe Is It to Eat Cart Food?”

The "Famous" Chicken & Rice Cart at 53rd & 6th Ave.

Hi,

I’ve been visiting NYC for several years now and have always wanted to try some of the food carts. Big reason why I never tried is I’m scared if the food is clean or not. I go to NYC for vacation and don’t want to end up in the hospital for food poisoning or something worse. So my question is how safe is it to eat cart food?

Thanks,
Daphnie

My dear sweet Daphnie. Daphnie Daphnie Daphnie. Have you read a single word on this website? Are you seriously asking me this question, as if the answer would be anything other than “of course it’s safe!”  We do an annual event called “Street Meat Palooza” for god’s sake.  It’s like asking Joey Chestnut if it’s safe to eat hot dogs, or Amy Winehouse if it’s safe to shoot up heroin.  Of course it’s safe… well, for most people.

Most Things at O Bao Noodles & Grill Will be Under $10: More on O Bao from Michael Huynh himself: "We [will] have pad thai, pad see ew, but we make it better. We've also got Singapore noodles, which I make with black soba; it's better than the original one with vermicelli... Most things will be under $10. We'll open in the beginning of September, maybe the 15th." This is sounding better and better.

Kim’s Aunt Kitchen is Also Great For Fried Shrimp

DSC01882

At this point everybody should know that Kim’s Aunt Kitchen Cart (on 46th btw. 5+6th) makes the best (and cheapest) fried fish sandwich in Midtown.  And I’ve even tried their bulgogi beef and lo mein.  But did you know that their fried shrimp are pretty spectacular as well?  As you may or may not know, I’m a big fan of the fried shrimp from a cart.  Little Morrocco (on 39th & 7th) does a nice job, as does the Halal & Seafood Cart (on 39th & 5th), and the 100% Halal Food Cart (on 54th and Park).  But those little jobbies pale in comparison to the monsters being served of the Kim’s Aunt Kitchen Cart.

No Taiwanese Fried Chicken For You Today: The NYC Cravings Truck was named one of the 10 best food trucks in the country by GQ! They usually spend Fridays on 53rd btw. Park+Lex, but sadly their truck is in the shop and won't be open today.  To make up for it, they said they will come back in that spot on Wednesday.  Follow them on twitter, or on the ML Twitter Tracker.

Ladies…The Line at Hallo Berlin is Literally a Sausage Fest

twitter

Now now boys, don’t stare. It’s impolite… and kind of creepy. Ladies, on the other hand, if these tweets are to be believed it looks like the Hallo Berlin Cart (on the SW corner of 54th & 5th) is the place to be!

Is Carnegie John’s Cart MIA?

Carnegie John's, Midtown NYCIt looks like the Kosher Oasis cart is back on 47th and 6th today, so we can move on to far more important matters… this comment on the post about the Carnegie John’s Cart (on 56th & 7th Ave.): “Did Carnegie John pack it in?  It’s closing in on a month and a half and no burgers….” A few weeks could be a vacation.  Over a month smells like a permit issue. Or something worse.  Let’s hope this isn’t permanent.  Anybody have any intel?  Put it in the comments, or email zach@midtownlunch.com

Treats Truck and Miss Softee Team Up to Make Ultimate Ice Cream Sandwich

mashup

Ask and ye shall receive!!! Miss Softee (who we profiled on Tuesday, from the Queen Frostine crew) has teamed up with the Treats Truck to create an ice cream sandwich! A squirt of soft serve, sandwiched between two (delicious) Treats Truck chocolate chip cookies.  Amazing… don’t let the weather discourage you from this one.  I love it when insane dreams become a reality.  Oh, and did I mention it’s only $4 (which is a great deal considering the two cookies alone from the Treats Truck would cost $2.)

Check out a photo of this wonderful creation after the jump…
