STEW LEONARDS IN YONKERS!!!!!!!! No question. Rent a car. Walk if you must. It is insane. I went last weekend, and grabbed lobsters at $3.99 lb., and king crab legs at $7 and change per lb. I have NEVER in my life seen prices this low. The limit on lobsters is 8 per person, and I did a 4 lobster lobster salad (for lobster rolls)...f'ing AWESOME. I ate it for 4 straight meals, along with huge King crab legs.
-
@goats: Only 8? Jesus christ that is a crap load of lobsters.
-
Looks like I am making a trip tonight. Is it ~2lb per lobster?
-
I have been jonesing for Snow Crab legs...
-
great question sushiburger!!!
-
@ cheeeeeeeesse: The sign said 8, but you could probably get in line twice...I don't have a designated lobster pot, so I cooked each one individually in a big iron pot. It's so easy---I'd never done it before. Just boil, drop in, bring back to boil, keep covered for 10 minutes. Just remember to get a cracker---I forgot and wound up using my wooden mallet!
@ Dubs: Each lobster is about 3.99. If you go for the larger lobsters, the price per lb goes up. The 3.99 per is only for 1- 1.25 lb. lobsters. It got pricier, though still very fair for the larger lobsters...though I don't remember the exact price.
I made 4 or 5 rolls in total using 4 1 lb lobsters, with each lobster roll coming to about 3 bucks! They were all PACKED with lobster!

goats, you mind sharing your recipe for lobster rolls? I am really craving this thing now and seriously considering some lobster rolls for tonight. Thanks in advance.
-
@ Dubs: Yeah, no problem, though I totally made it up as I went along. Once you get all the meat cut up--I like big chunks personally, I put it all in a bowl, added 2 big dollops of mayo (I'd use about 3-3 1/2 tablespoons for 4 lobsters)....2 tablespoons lemon juice, about a stalk of celery sliced thin, white pepper, black pepper, cayanne pepper, paprika and a pinch of salt--all to taste. I really enjoyed my creation, though I bet there are tons of recipes online...
-
mmmmm.... Did you also use a side-split lightly-toasted hot dog bun?
-
@ Stevnp----Of course! I got the Stew Leonards hot dog buns (and tons of other stuff) on my trip--4 out of 7 toast setting on my toaster oven....I was going to use a soft hoagie roll toasted, but I thought it was greedy to hog up all the lobster in 2 sandwiches!

Um, to the crab question, for Dungeness crab I recommend Canton Gourmet in Flushing, easily accessible by train (it's on Prince Street so you can walk from the 7 train). I prefer "garlic steamed over broad white rice noodles" but they make it in a lot of different ways.
For blue crabs Maryland style, there used to be a really great crab bar in Howard Beach with good prices - I guess that's slightly less accessible because EVERYTHING is a hike from the train station - but it was good and people would go there from NJ/upstate/LI all the time. Full disclosure, I used to work there, so I might be biased.

Stew's is a good store, but damn pricy for produce. The fish is very reasonable though. For meats, I'd rather go to costco just below Stew's.
I live in Riverdale and theres a dearth of any italian pork stores / butchers. We get our italian sausage from Stews (not the best, but very good, and 10 times better and less fatty than the "premio" brand).
-
@ Adam--yeah--I noticed the produce was ridiculously expensive--especially compared to the fish. I stayed away from most of it...though I did buy spinach, an artichoke and some berries...

so... from the Fatty Crab discussion from the "What are you picky on?" thread.. I was wondering where everyone goes if they want crab... I love crab... and I hate to admit that I don't have a single place i go when I feel like crab... (sometimes i go to Todai ... or whatever the new name is... )..
This is for anywhere in Manhattan (or easily accessible from Manhattan)
