I love Sullivan Street Bakery, both bread and pastries. But it may be a bit out of the way for you. There's also Financier. And, no retail store for Tom Cat. But Citarella carries Tom Cat baguettes.

I've got to second Sullivan Street Bakery. Best bread I've ever had...

Bread Alone Bakery is at the Rock Center farmers' market Wed - Fri.
Agreed that Sullivan Street is about as good as it gets, but Bread Alone has some terrific loaves and is widely available in the NYC farmers' market circuit (not to mention at many grocery stores, e.g., Fairway and Whole Foods).
Full disclosure: my parents own and operate Bread Alone. On the one hand this may bias my opinion a bit; on the other, my family's 25+ years in the bread business means that I have tried a lot of bread, and that I know good stuff when I taste it. Bread Alone has some good stuff (and is local and organic, to boot!).
Love to hear them any luncher thoughts about Bread Alone, will make sure that they make it to an ear that matters.

I love good bread and my favorite bread is plain baguette from Amy's bread. There is simply nothing like bread and butter.
Anyway, is there a good bakery in midtown that makes amazing baked goods, both bread and pastry?
Also, I see these silver(or were they black) trucks that say Tom Cat bakery. I guess they deliver to delis and restaurants in the city. I think they make pretty good bread too but I wonder if they have a retail store.
