Red Olive Brings Burritos to 55th + Lex

There’s been some activity in the forums and comments lately about a new burrito joint/generic deli/mystery spot that has cropped up on 55th and Lex. While generic delis definitely aren’t our thing here on ML, burritos definitely are, so eventually my curiosity was piqued and I wandered over to check it out.

No More Sweet Potater Tots At STK OUT

Sad face. STK OUT has been open for only a couple months and they’ve already changed their menu. Guess what didn’t make the cut? The sweet potater tots I enjoyed so much when they first opened. The good news is that the mac & cheese bites are still available. Oh, and all menu items are now under $10.

Contributor Stalking (The “Fried Goodness” edition)

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (We’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Outdoor eating is in full effect as Brian Googa’ed, Blondie Mooga’ed, and Brownie checked out the Vendy’s International Meats Local. Donny had fried chicken at Bobwhite Lunch and Supper Counter in Alphabet City, Rachel made fish tacos and I talked about my photo process at TechMunch.

Elsewhere in the ML universe… Jamie can’t find decent ramen in Philadelphia, Andrea discovered Greek food in a basement restaurant downtown and Zach is still on the search for good Vietnamese food in Los Angeles.

Super Dumpling Does More Than Just Dumplings

Super Dumplings After my initial meal at Super Dumpling, I knew I would return for more even though their dumplings were not as good as the ones from Chinatown. I was very much interested in their dumpling combos like dumplings with noodles or dumplings with General Tso’s chicken or even dumplings with mango salad (yeah I’m not so sure about this combo). A good chunk of their combos are only couple bucks more than getting just the dumplings and that sounded like a good deal. And who doesn’t like a good deal?

Rickshaw Dumpling Adds Option, Ups Prices

Rickshaw Dumplings has been tweeting about offering their dumpling sets in threes (instead of six of one kind), which allows for mixing and matching. Sounds fun, right? I went by the Times Square Kiosk to check it out and was surprised to find that the real story is that they’ve increased their prices. Yes, you can now get dumplings in sets of three, but it’ll run you $3.75! Six will now cost you $6.50 ($7.00 if you order duck), which is a $.50 increase. The good news is that the “Rickshaw regular” — six dumplings plus one side — remains $9.00 … but still, those are some mighty pricey dumplings.

55th Street Menchanko Tei Closed Again

Luncher Harry noticed that the 55th Street location of one of our favorite noodle soup spots, Menchanko Tei, is closed. This is not the first time they’ve been closed temporarily, so I called the 45th Street location to get the final word. The lady who answered the phone informed me that they are simply closed for renovations and plan to re-open in about 3 to 4 weeks. If any business is used to closing and re-opening, it’s Menchanko Tei so I guess we’ll see what happens.

Prime Burger to Close on Saturday!?

Prime Burger, Midtown NYC

Eater is reporting that Midtown burger veteran Prime Burger will be closing its doors soon. The exact shutter date is unclear (it could be Saturday), so if you’re a big fan of this 74-year-old establishment, you might want to stop by this week. It was always a little too pricey to be one of our favorite burgers, but there is no denying it’s a classic Midtown lunch spot, and we are sad to see it go.

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Jen”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Jen, a grant writer in Bryant Park who wishes she was lunching in Hong Kong.

Name: Jen

Age: 32

Occupation: Grant Writer

Where in Midtown do you work? Bryant Park

Favorite Kind of Food: Anything that’s spicy. I love exxxtra hot Thai and Indian curry. Peruvian aji sauce = amazing. I’m always looking for great Buffalo Wings. Piri Piri chicken needs to happen in this city, stat.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: I’m wary of raw seafood and fish dishes, but I’ll usually still eat it if it’s there.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Right now? Go! Go! Curry (on 38th btw. 7+8th), Bian Dang, Comme Ci Comme Ca, and Cinnamon Snail.
