Five Guys Upsets In N Out!?!: This is kind of a shocker. A Hamburger Today is having a NCAA style burger tourney and Five Guys just defeated In N Out Burger in the quarters. We're torn between thinking that's completely insane, and having a little pride in the chain that actually serves burgers in Midtown.  Maybe this is just the motivation In N Out needs to expand to the East Coast...

Cer Te’s Mr. Potatoskin is Like a Fried Chicken Stuffed Baked Potato

The end of the month usually involves 12 hour days and no lunch, but as I helped wrap up March, I found myself daydreaming about the next sandwich mutant in Cer Te’s (on 55th btw 5th+6th) Sandwich of the Month club! The Fall of Saigon was so wrongly-named, so unbelievable tasty I even got it twice. When I read about the April Sandwich, Mr. Potato Skin, I was immediately excited (potato skins are a close second to wings on my bar food list.) And then I saw Masto’s pictures, potato instead of bread?! Mind blown.

Macaron Cafe To Open Second Location

MacarOn Cafe E 59th btw Madison and Lexington, NYC

I was pumped to hear that Market, the new takeout place in the Grand Hyatt (on 42nd btw. Park+Lex), will be carrying out-of-bounds sweet stuff, like Macaron Cafe, near Grand Central. But then Lunch’er “hightemp” told us about a new Macaron Cafe that’s moving in on E 59th btw. Madison+Park! A staff member at the original location (on W 36th St btw 7th+Bway) said they hope to open the new location at the beginning of July. With all these recent dessert finds, I may never have to leave Midtown East.

88 Cent Pop Burger Alert: April 8th means it's time once again for 88 cent Pop Burgers (on 58th btw. Mad+5th) courtesy of 8 Coupons.  The deal is only good this afternoon from 2 to 6:30pm, and you have to text yourself the coupon from here. Bonus... there is also a "free fries with the purchase of a lunch entree" coupon on that same page- good until April 19th.

Cart Watch: Hallo Berlin Has Been Missing for Months

It appears as if the Hallo Berlin Cart (on 54th and 5th) has gone and disappeared.  Lunch’er “Rootbeer” commented the other day that it hasn’t been seen in months, and the same discussion popped up on Yelp as well. Hallo Berlin co-founder Rolf Babiel passed away this past October, but the cart returned shortly thereafter with his brother at the helm. And this isn’t their usual July vacation time either. If anyone has any insight, leave it in the comments. For now I guess we’ll have to settle for Hallo Berlin Express (on 9th Ave. btw. 50+51st)

Day 1 at Ma Peche’s Milk Bar

Momofuku Milk Bar, NYC

Ma Peche aka “Momofuku Midtown” (on 56th btw. 5+6th) is barely four hours old and arguments have already started about whether it’s worth the money. Obviously, lunch’ers aren’t gonna spend $150 on lunch everyday, but Ma Peche’s Milk Bar and $10 Midtown Lunch specials – which they’re still serving in the Chambers Hotel mezzanine you can still order online– are right up our alley! Contributor Stalking: Korean Splurge, El Quinto Pino, Pancake & Bacon Custard

Do you wonder what our new ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (They’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Ultraclay splurged on a $13 (shocking!) Korean lunch at Don’s Bogam,  Jason Lam finds durian ice cream in Sunset Park, Danny eats breakfast for lunch at El Quinto Pino, and Blondie and Brownie give you the lowdown on the new Shake Shack custard flavors (spoiler alert: Saturdays is pancake and bacon day!)  Plus if you like videos, Amy Cao has posted the latest episode of “Stupidly Simple Snacks, and it features pastry chef (and Vendy Award Judge) Pichet Ong.

NYT Discovers Culture Espresso Bar: We're big fans of the sandwiches and coffee at the Culture Espresso Bar (on 38th btw. 5+6th), so we were excited to see them mentioned in the New York Times today (even though Oliver Strand called their sandwich menu dated.)  Anybody serving stuff on Sullivan St. Bakery bread is alright in our book!

At Lunch Now: Ma Peche is Confirmed Open! (And There’s a Daily Bread Special)

And there she is… the new Milk Bar at the front of Momofuku’s Ma Peche (on 55th btw. 5+6th). Not a “preview” photo. Not a “friends and family” photo. But the real deal… open to the public… serving up food photo! (The main dining room wasn’t open when this photo was taken, but is expected to be open by 12:30. Update: It’s open!) As reported last week, there is salty pistachio soft serve in the Milk Bar (along with the requisite pies and cookies). And they will offer one savory bread a day for $6.

Check out the bread “schedule” after the jump…

SHOCKER: Vic’s Bagel Bar Is Better Than Ess A Bagel

Vic's Bagel Bar

A few weeks ago, we reported that Vic’s Bagel Bar (on 3rd Ave. btw. 36+37th) had opened and was offering Midtown bagel lovers the option to customize their cream cheese (Cold Stone Creamery style.) Curiosity always gets the best of me, so of course I had to return to try one of their bagel monstrosities… the Backyard BBQ. Read more »
