Free Belgian Madness Today From Wafels & Dinges

Wafel with Ice CreamToday is National Holiday in Belgium, and to celebrate Wafels & Dinges will be giving out free tastings of their newest ice cream flavor, Belgian Madness. The ice cream is made with honey, lemon and Hoegaarden beer and while they’ve been serving it for a few weeks now, today is the official launch day. Plus between Noon and 1pm you can get a free cone of the stuff (or you can get it as a gratis topping on a waffle) at all their carts and trucks. The truck should be parked on 46th between 5th and 6th (if they don’t get shooed by the cops like last week) and they have a cart on 40th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue. Just be sure to check the ML Twitter Tracker before you head out.  (Photo courtesy of Blonde & Brownie)

Highlights From Our 5th Birthday Party

Crowd shot

On Saturday we gathered together at City Winery with a couple hundred of our closest friends to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of Midtown Lunch (yes, we too are surprised this thing has been around for 5 years!)   A great time was had by all thanks to the amazing food (provided graciously by Kwik Meal, The Biryani Cart, Cer Te, Ma Peche, Food Gallery 32, El Rey del Sabor, Tri Tip Grill, Wafels & Dinges, Miss Softee & the Rolling Cones, Kelvin Slush, and Momofuku Milk Bar) and the endless drinks courtesy of Brooklyn Brewery and GuS’s soda.

Check out the highlights, after the jump…

Wafels & Dinges Now Selling Speculoos Ice Cream!

Wafels & Dinges

This week’s Twitter Tracker has been abuzz with news of W&D’s new speculoos ice cream. Seeing as Blondie and I were among the original proponents of ice cream dinges back in the day, I had to go check this out.

Pull Out Your Belgian Flag, Friday is International Waffle Day

Wafels & Dinges
Friday, March 25 marks International Wafel Day and once again Wafels & Dinges will offer a FREE WAFEL to customers “fully dressed in our Belgian tri-color on Friday, March 25.” That’s black, yellow, and red. This is seriously upping the ante from last year when you only needed to wear yellow. No word on if a black, yellow and red post it note tie will cut it (though I’m guessing not with the “fully dressed” requirement.) Freeloaders, check your closets!

Today Might be Your Last Chance for Wafels & Dinges’ Al Razzcapone

Please welcome our newest contributor… Lunch’er Brian. Today he lets us know about a Wafels & Dinges special that is ending today.

Even in the blustery rain (like yesterday), the guys at Wafels & Dinges always keep the mood fun and playful. Besides witty tweets and charming customer service, they’ve been playing with their dinges. Get your mind out of the gutter – I’m talking about the wacky toppings they put on top of their scrumptious waffles. Unlike previous specials like sausage and gravy or chili con carne, this week they returned to their sweet roots with a delicious but goofily named Al Razzcapone. I’m not sure what Al Capone or gangsters have to do with waffles or raspberries, but since I’m more interested in the taste of the food, I’ll let the groan-worthy pun slide.

Wafels & Dinges Serving a Chili Con Carne Waffle

Wafels & Dinges is on a roll… last month it was sausage gravy on a waffle, today it’s chili con carne! You can get it on top of a waffle with w. cheddar, cilantro, sour cream, and jalapeño, or as just “chili con dinges” (!?)  They’re parked on 52nd.  Also on the ML Twitter Tracker today, Frites N Meats is on 52nd, Mexicue is on 45th, Eddie’s Pizza is on 52nd, Schnitzel & Things is on 46th, and Comme Ci Comme Ca is on 38th.

Wafels & Dinges Introduces a Sausage and Gravy Waffle

Wafels and Dinges Truck parked in the Treats Truck usual spot on 45th

Most of you had the day off from Midtown yesterday, but I was here and noticed on the ML Twitter Tracker that Wafels & Dinges was serving maple sausage ‘n gravy wafels “for connoisseur evaluation.” Say what? Sausage and gravy on waffles?! Clearly I needed to check this out. Read more »

Wafels & Dinges Brings It with Their S’mores Waffle

DSC00145

Everything’s coming up Wafels & Dinges this week. First the news that they are expanding to a new permanent vending spot in Central Park just over the ML boundary. Then the news that they tied for the #1 slot in the new Zagat cart ratings. I decided to pay them a visit and lo and behold their special of the week, the S’mores Waffle, had my name all over it. How could I resist?

Sidewalk Cleaning Becomes Latest Weapon in Vendor Wars

We all know how buildings have used planter boxes to keep unwanted street vendors from parking in front of their real estate, but this morning a building on 59th btw. Park+Lex took a different tactic: cleaning the sidewalks. Wafels and Dinges added another cart-not a truck- to their fleet recently (you might have seen the original South St. Seaport cart on our Downtown site) debuting it this morning on 59th. In retaliation, the building surrounded the cart with cones, and proceeded to power wash the sidewalks. In the rain. W&D stood their ground, but around Noon the cops came and kicked them out of the spot (presumably because the building complained?) They’re still looking for a new spot. As of 2:50pm they’re on 58th btw. Lex+3rd.

The silver lining in all this is the Wafels and Dinges Truck has a new cart that they plan on parking in under-served areas of the city (including Midtown!) And, since it is a cart it will have a slightly easier time finding parking than the truck (even though that wasn’t the case today.) Follow them on Twitter for the location of the new cart.

File This Under Great Ideas: Wafels & Dinges’ Elvis Waffle

DSC00014

Elvis Aaron Presley’s legacy lives on in all things flavored with peanut butter, bacon, and bananas and now that legacy extends to waffles. Wafels & Dinges is now offering an Elvis special waffle ($7)–their bacon Brussels waffle topped with peanut butter and bananas (someone needs to tell them that if they truly want to do an Elvis, they should be topping their concoction with honey.) A picture of the Elvis waffle in it’s glory after the jump.
