Wafels & Dinges Gets Hassled, But Still Manages to Crown Mr. & Ms. Waffle 2010

And on National Waffle Day?!  That’s not right.  This is all we know right now… but we’re trying to find out exactly what happened over on 52nd btw. Lex+3rd today.  Was anybody there for the crowning of Miss and Mister Wafel?

UPDATE: We’re hearing that the building and the cops have calmed down a bit… and they just crowned Miss and Mister Wafel (around 2:20pm).  Photos and a full report coming soon.

Check out all the photos from the event (and Miss and Mister Wafel) after the jump…

Celebrate National Waffle Day at the Wafels and Dinges Truck

Wafels & Dinges

Earlier this year midtown lunchers celebrated International Waffle Day at Wafels & Dinges with the wearing o’ the yellow in honor of the Belgian flag. Well, today in honor of National Waffle Day the Wafels & Dinges Truck has more ways for you to enjoy free waffles… W & D is inviting any child – or anyone who draws like a child (that’d be me & you, dear reader)– to create pictures of wafels or the Wafels & Dinges truck, which will be then decorated with the artwork. Anyone submitting a picture will receive a free wafel, regardless of their artistic talent. For the non-artists, anyone who buys something from Wafels & Dinges on National Waffle Day will have their name entered into a raffle for wafel-themed prizes.

But wait… there’s more.

Spotlight on Spekuloos: In case you missed our mention of it a few weeks ago, the New York Times did a little spread (pun intended) on the spekuloos spread now being sold by Wafels & Dinges ($7.95 a jar.)  If you haven't tried it yet it's basically those Biscoff cookies you get on airplanes ground into a peanut butter-like paste.  In other words... deeeeelicious!

Wafels & Dinges Tips: Need help ordering at the Wafels & Dinges Truck?  Our good friend Kathy YL Chan has some tips to help maximize your visit... ice cream is a necessity during the summer, and even though they always have liege waffles ready to go- ask them to make you a fresh one.  It's "totally worth the extra 5-minute wait." Wafels & Dinges Rolls Out a New Cart

Over on the Downtown section of Midtown Lunch, Andrea (our new Downtown corespondent) has discovered that the Wafels & Dinges Truck (which usually parks in Midtown on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays) has launched a new permanent cart parked at the South Street Seaport. According to owner Thomas this is the first of a number of carts he plans on rolling out over the summer. Doubtful that one of them will end up in Midtown, but we can dream- right?  The cart features the same menu as the truck, minus the pulled pork topped waffle.   (Also making us kind of jealous today Downtown… a new New Orleans themed sandwich shop with fried chicken biscuits, po boys, and $1 beignets. Hmmm… that’s kind of close to the F and the B/D, right?)

At Lunch Now: Tie Made Out of Post Its Will Get You a Free Waffle

wafels_tie

Didn’t see our tweet last night to wear yellow? (Or saw it, but ignored us?!) That doesn’t mean you can’t get a free waffle today. Check out this genius who fashioned a tie out of light yellow post it notes! Also spotted, a necklace made out of what looks like construction paper.

Check that one out after the jump…

How to Eat at 10 Carts For $10: A Thursday Street Food Tour of Midtown

food cart tour collage
Have you ever been kind of jealous of the winners of Zach’s various cart tours?  Even though I work in midtown and can hit the great midtown carts anytime I want, there’s something to be said about the fun of taking on a bunch of them at once.  To really do it right you need strength in numbers, so when I learned that a couple of my friends from Seattle, would be in town and free for lunch during the week, I started plotting potential food adventures.  Both of them regularly read Blondie & Brownie and they were jealous of the midtown cart/food truck scene.  The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that we should try to hit as many carts for as many different types of foods as possible and with that in mind, may a present Brownie’s Cart Canyon Tour: 10 carts/10 cuisines/$10 a person…

Wafels & Dinges on Throwdown With Bobby Flay (Video)

Last night the Wafels and Dinges Truck episode of Throwdown with Bobby Flay aired, and for anybody who knows how tough it is to make the perfect Belgian waffle the result comes as no surprise. Our good friend Thomas straight up schooled Bobby Flay, who made a tasty topping but couldn’t quite master the texture of the perfect liege waffle. Unlike the bread pudding Throwdown with the Dessert Truck, or some of the other episodes I’ve seen where Bobby’s talent as a chef gave him an advantage, it was pretty obvious from the crowd comments who was going to win. Congrats Thomas on your big win! You can celebrate the victory today with a waffle on 46th btw. 5+6th (and saying “Bobby Flay” gets you a free dinge.)

And check out the video highlights from the episode, after the jump.

Waffle Throwdown: Back in October Bobby Flay took on the Wafels & Dinges cart in a Throwdown, and the episode will finally air tomorrow night. Unlike the Dessert Truck throwdown, where the results were pretty much leaked immediately, this one has been kept under wraps. The show airs Wednesday night at 9pm on the Food Network.
