VendrTV Loves Wafels & Dinges: Speaking of Wafels & Dinges, they're the profiled street vendor in this week's episode of VendrTV. The best part of the episode (besides watching the adorable Dan Delaney scarf down two waffles) is owner Thomas telling the story of some old lady bringing her own butter to put on a waffle. Gotta love NYC! Watch the video here>>

Wafels & Dinges Back With New Schedule and a Crazy Croque

DSC05677

The Wafels & Dinges Truck has decided to mix things up at the beginning of the new year by changing up their schedule.  Here’s where and when you can expect to find them in Midtown:

Tuesday: 58th betw Lex & 3rd
Wednesday: 52nd betw 6 & 7 / alternating with Financial District
Thursday: 46th betw 5th & closer to 6th (previous Thursday spot was on 45th)
Friday: Broadway & 60th

They’re also still serving their croque monsieur, which I tried just before the New Year… and let me tell you it is one big hot mess (in the best possible way.)  Check it out after the jump…

Wafel Truck Launches Croque Monsieur Today: This just in from the Wafels & Dinges Truck (parked on 47th and 3rd): "Launching the Croque Monsieur today ($6). Cheese is a blend of 4 cheeses grated, mixed w cream, spices & fresh herbs. Ham is a good Canadian cooked ham. We put 1 thick slice in the middle, with cheese on both sides. Comes we a little arugula on the side." Sadly it's not on a waffle (because that would have been awesome!)

Your Guide to This is Why You’re Fat’s Eat N Tweet Challenge

The week that gross food fanatics have been waiting for is finally here… “This is Why You’re Fat: The Book” is out, and to celebrate they’re having an Eat N Tweet Challenge today involving 6 NYC food trucks (and a lot of over the top lunch specials). The way the contest works is this: every 20 minutes, starting at 11am, @TIWYF will be twittering one by one the locations of each of the 6 trucks in the city selling a special item inspired by the book (i.e. disgustingly delicious). The first person to hit up each truck, and twitter photos of themselves @TIWYF with each of the six specials will win a private food cart party of your choice with 25 friends, and This is Why You’re Fat gift bags with free copies of the book! I know a lot of you have twitter blocked by your offices, so we’re adding @TIWYF to the Midtown Lunch Twitter Tracker for the day so you can follow along.

The best part is, even if you can’t make it to all six trucks you can still try any of the This is Why You’re Fat inspired menu items. And I’m pretty sure at least three of the six trucks will be in Midtown tomorrow. Find out which ones, plus more tips, after the jump.

Wafels & Dinges Completely “Fooled” by Throwdown

throwdown

I love how Bobby Flay continues to champion the New York City street cart scene.  Since his original, widely publicized Throwdown with the Dessert Truck, he’s gotten Throwdown help from the Jamaican Dutchy and Kwik Meal, plus visited the Biriyani Cart, the Dutchy, and Wafels and Dinges for a pre-Vendy award spot on CBS.  The latest visit comes courtesy of Serious Eats, who reported yesterday that Flay returned to the Wafels and Dinges Truck yesterday for a full fledged Throwdown!  Owner Thomas confirmed the news on Twitter, and posted photos to Facebook.   It also appears that the producers have gotten far better at lying to the contestants.  Dessert Truck figured things out immediately, but Thomas said he was completely “fooled into believing that it was a pilot about food trucks.”

Wafel Blog: I don't normally read the Wafels and Dinges Truck blog, but I think I might start. Did you know Geraldo Rivera was a big fan of the waffles?  And the owner of the truck was arrested two weeks ago for arguing with a cop about what constitutes a legal spot to vend.  (Plus he had an unpaid parking ticket.)

Bacon Waffle: Oh my. If a fresh baked liege waffle studded with bacon sounds good to you (and quite frankly how could it not) you'll probably want to check out this Serious Eats New York post about the latest offering from the Wafels and Dinges Truck.

The Origin of Kool Aid Pickles

Wafels and DingesNew York Times writer John T. Edge hit up the Waffles and Dinges Truck the other day and was incredibly excited about the kool aid pickle that came with his pulled pork topped waffle lunch special. A few years back he wrote a piece for the Times that is required reading for anybody interested in the bright red kool aid flavored delicacy!

Wafels and Dinges is Now the Johnny Rockets of the Food Truck World

Wafels and Dinges

After a few months of being out of commission, Wafels and Dinges hit the road again a few weeks ago with a brand new, tricked out truck.  To celebrate, they gave away free wafels on Thursday… so naturally I was there to wait on line and get my bit of free waffle goodness. The new truck is quite a sight to behold, with a giant lit up menu and newly installed speakers that pump 50s music from Sirius/XM satellite radio onto the street.  If you’re really lucky, they’ll throw on the kind of annoying/kind of amazing “Waffle Song” while you’re waiting on line.  It’s really loud, and I’m guessing at some point it’s going to get them kicked out of at least one of their regular spots.  After15 minutes of hanging out, and listening to music, I thought for sure the guys serving the waffles were going to jump on top of the truck and start singing and dancing.

Wafels and Dinges

For free waffle hour, you got a half portion of whichever kind of wafel you wanted (brussels or liege) topped with two dinges (I went with banana and chocolate.)  Delicious.  Of course, the fact that it was free helped tremendously.  I’ve never actually done a proper post about the Wafels and Dinges Truck, which spends a few days a week in Midtown.  As you may or may not know, they not only sell waffles with sweet toppings but they also have savory waffle topped with BBQ pork and cole slaw that’s perfect for lunchtime. I posted about this when they introduced it back in October, but never actually got to try it for myself.

Well, as long as I was there…

At Lunch Now: Midtown Loves Free Waffles

The fact that free waffles ends at 1pm did not discourage these people still lined up at 12:55pm. And their patience was rewarded… everyone on line at 1pm gets a free waffle! Nicely done W&D. You could have been dicks and cut it off at 1, but you didn’t. Much appreciated…

Oh… and the new addition to the dinges menu: Speculoos, a spread made from ground up biscoff cookies (the ones you get on airplanes.)  Consistency of peanut butter, but tastes like gingerbread. Amazing!
