Midtown Lunch

It seems the truck crackdown is becoming an epidemic in Midtown West. Brownie warned us a few weeks ago that 50th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue was becoming another hot spot for food trucks. And sure enough, on Tuesday, Desi Truck was forced to move from that location halfway through the day. They arrived at Hanover Square in the Financial District around 3:00, which is later than almost anybody eats lunch. The owner told me they plan on making this their new permanent weekday location as the parking in Midtown is getting too insane. He also told me in the coming weeks, they will launch a second truck at the corner of Spring and Sixth Avenue. Is this going to be a trend that all of our beloved Midtown food trucks will be forced to re-locate well below 14th Street?

In other 50th Street news, Big D’s Grub was also forced to close by police yesterday and strangely enough, the Sombrero Cart has returned.

Every Friday our man UltraClay goes south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Earlier this week when I saw the news that the new section of The Highline had opened, I darted from my desk, took a long lunch and headed west to get a good look. When I was there, I got the news that The Lot On Tap (30th Street at 10th Avenue), the food truck park and beer garden from Tom Colicchio would be open the next day and I knew that I’d be making the trip west again. I stopped in Wednesday just as they were opening up to see what it was all about.

It’s National Ice Tea Day (who knew!?) and to celebrate Snapple has partnered with a bunch of food trucks to hand out free lunch and free Snapple all over NYC.  Here in Midtown there are three trucks participating in the promotion… Rickshaw Dumpling (on 45th & 6th), Schnitzel & Things (on 52nd & Lex) and Bian Dang which will be somewhere in Midtown East is on 55th btw. Lex+3rd). As always you’ll want to double check the ML Twitter Tracker for exact locations.  Freeloaders, prepare to engage.

It’s been over half a year since I ate lunch at Woorijip (32nd btw. B’way+5th). I used to work around that area so back in the day this was my go-to lunch spot for Korean food. Their kimbap may not be the freshest but they sure have one heck of a by the pound buffet. I had plans to meet some friends at the newly opened Beerparc and was thinking a return trip for lunch might be in order. And what’s this? Hello lovely food item that I have never seen before!

Anytime I’m feeling light in the wallet, I want the Big D’s Grub Truck to be in my neighborhood. Both Blondie and Andrea were impressed with the amount of food that they received in their taco orders, and last week, it was my turn to be impressed by the size of the spicy pork grinder that I received for $7.

The other week we reported some changes in the Jamaican Dutchy empire were afoot – namely that the old cart would be moving downtown, and that they would be rolling out a brand new food truck to take its place. The new truck made its debut on Tuesday, and just like any other food truck, they’ve already run into their share of problems.
