Vietnamese burritos exist, and they’re in Midtown. That’s what I learned when I stumbled into Boi Sandwich (3rd Ave. btw 44th+45th) looking for a quick lunch the other day. They’re taking Bahn Mi-style ingredients and stuffing them into flour tortillas, and the result is a tasty bit of fusion.

If 2012 was the year of the Pot Belly expansion, 2013 certainly seems to be the year of the Pie Face takeover of Midtown. The Aussie pie and flat white franchise seems to be opening yet another location in Midtown West. The familiar signage popped up over a storefront at 729 8th Avenue, between 45th and 46th streets. No word on an opening date yet.
There are times when Sarah writes up Flatiron Lunch, and I wish those spots would expand to Midtown. Spreads is definitely one in that category — I had a fantastic lunch at their 30th street location — and when I read about Kobeyaki last year I was very intrigued by the burger and fries she liked so much. Luckily, Kobeyaki signage popped up on 40th street earlier this spring, and they opened just a few weeks ago. And there’s a menu item I somehow hadn’t noticed before — soft shell crab bun, I couldn’t wait to eat you!

You may or may not have noticed but starting today the forums are back. We’ve always valued community over everything here at Midtown Lunch and it pained us to have to take down the one section of the site where you guys could go and talk to each other, organize meet ups, and post tips, opinions, and news. It took awhile, but we finally got them back up and running and 99% spam free. So enjoy! Now on to getting the Twitter Tracker fixed…
Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.
Pongsri already has history with ML. Zach reviewed two noodle (pad Thai and pad see ew) dishes at the the midtown west branch 5 years ago. I decided to hit up the Flatiron location on 23 btw. 6+7th and try some of the other parts of the menu.
If you’ve been a long time fan of the site you’ve undoubtedly seen our man Brian Hoffman’s holiday themed videos. There was the time he ate Sichuan rabbit for Easter, pie for 4th of July, and oblood sausage for Halloween. But his latest might be his best yet, provided you don’t mind listening to a goofy white guy rap his way through a food filled parody of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”. The ladies from MVPleez step in to do the Alicia Keys part, and it’s kind of amazing how many food references they cram into the video in 5 mins.

When Wok to Walk opened, we were meh about it despite a nifty format. With Asian options galore elsewhere (such as, for example, literally right next door), it seemed something of a waste of time and money despite a fresh, visible preparation that involved afterburners. We got word from one of their brand people that the message was received, and they were sending an ops person to improve things a little bit. Can they raise above mediocre, under-utilized bacon or are we looking at an empty bottle of Johnnie Woker?

Rejoicing is in order. The much-missed Korilla BBQ truck is back from their hiatus, as promised. The menu hasn’t changed much, but tacos are no longer an option. Now the vessels of choice are burritos, chosun bowls, and salads. According to their website, they should be on 47th and Park today. Time to satisfy that Korilla craving…
Talk about a punch in the gut, but for the right reasons – stopping by the recently-closed Kati House, the landlord was checking the locks. I took the opportunity to ask a few questions, and a litany of complaints, problems, and gross stuff came out of the chat. Bottom line: Midtown is now back to Kati Roll Company for its kati roll fix. Unfortunately, these were nothing new to the location. More info under the jump.
