Boi Noodles’ Congee Is Not So Authentic, But Still Tasty

Good Vietnamese food is hard to come by in Midtown, and as we’ve mentioned before, Boi Noodles is about what you’d expect from Vietnamese food in the area. That said, I’ve been curious about the very inexpensive congee on the menu for a few weeks now, and yesterday I finally stopped in to see what it’s all about.

It’s Almost Passover, Get Your Danny Macaroons Fix at Bergdorf’s

Berdorf's Bar 5F

For years I was an avowed coconut hater. I studiously avoided anything with coconut. Over time, however, I’ve discovered that I don’t really hate coconut. I hate people who make horrible things with coconut. Coconut in the right hands can be exceptionally delicious. Take for example the macaroons from Danny Macaroons that I finally tried at Choice Eats. Blondie had been singing their praises forever, but I couldn’t see past my deep dislike of coconut to give them a shot. When I finally did, man, oh, man, they were so good, so, so habit-forming that I had to seek them out in the city and I found them I midtown at a most unexpected location: Bergdorf Goodman’s.

Iroha Launches Take Out Bento Lunch Specials

Iroha Take Out Bento specials

Sapporo’s next door neighboor, Iroha, is typically out of the ML range, but they recently posted signage touting new takeout bento lunches. You can get Chicken Teriyaki, Chicken Kara-Age, Beef Yakiniku or Salmon Teriyaki bentos for $9.50 with fried shumai, California rolls, and kinpira. The vegetarian bento with tofu nuggets will run you $8.50. Early adopters, let us know what you think in the comments.

Iroha, 152 W 49th St, (between 6th and 7th Ave), (212) 398-9049

It’s Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s!

It’s that time again…Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s has officially arrived. According to their Scoop Shop locator, both the Rock Center concourse shop and the Macy’s location (on the 4th floor of Macy’s) will be participating. Details are the same as in years past–free cones are offered from noon until 8pm. Lines tend to be busiest at lunch and towards the end of the day but generally move quickly. And word on the street (or the twitter feed) is that they will be giving out their new Greek frozen yogurt among other free flavors. Free loaders, you know the drill. Did you get your free cone? Help a fellow Midtown Lunch’r out and let us know your wait time in the comments.

Pizza Wars Push Slice Price to 75 Cents on 6th Ave

As much as we love a deal here at Midtown Lunch, the trend of cheap pizza has been a little bizarre to watch. Last fall, 2 Bros. popped up just doors away from Indian Newsstand (and pizza joint) Bombay and a price war ensued. Early this week, luncher ‘jonhack’ posted in the forums that Pizza King, Bombay’s pizza joint, was selling slices for 79 cents and that 2 Bros had responded by knocking their price down to 75 cents. As you can see from the photo above, it looks like Pizza King has matched their price. How far will this pizza brinksmanship go?!? Are we looking at 50 cent slices soon? Only time will tell.

STK OUT To Finally Open Wednesday?

It’s been over 9 months since STK Out first displaced the Trini Paki Cart, but according to their Facebook and Twitter Wednesday will be the grand opening. Sure enough I walked by today and they were wearing down the temporary window coverings in preparation for their opening. Despite the name and all the talk of it being perfect for the lunch crowd looking for gourmet meals on the go, all early signs point to this place being way out of the Midtown Lunch price range. I guess we’ll find out on Wednesday!

Katsuhama’s Oyakodon Is The Best In Midtown

I know, after all the oyakodon posts on this blog, to write that headline will most likely cause some controversy (especially with Donny T.), but having grown up in Tokyo for eight years of my childhood, I have eaten (and actually cook at home) a lot of oyakodon, and the one at Katsuhama is, in fact, the best I’ve had in Midtown.

Room Service’s Crispy Duck Salad is Quacktastic

Room Service is one of the many Thai joints open on 9th Avenue, slightly north of what I call “Yum Yum row,” more commonly known as 46th street. It’s not wholly different from its neighbors — they all have similar lunch specials, most within the Midtown Lunch price range — but when I’m in the mood for a salad, instead of hitting up some deli, I often turn to the crispy duck salad at Room Service.

Pitopia Serves Up a Solid Falafel

Pitopia opened in November, and it proceeded to narrowly overtake falafel favorite Taim in the 2011 readers’ poll. It’s pretty shocking for a newbie to win over Midtown — we are, after all, a pretty tough crowd — so quickly and easily and with such stiff competition. I’m of the mind that Taim is one of the best trucks on our streets today, but since they clearly must be doing something right at Pitopia, I finally went to check it out.

If You Like Goat Cheese and Lamb, Try Pizza by Certe’s March Special

Last week, Rachel announced the March specials at Certe and Pizza by Certe. This month’s pizza comes topped with spicy lamb meatballs, fava beans, goat cheese and sautéed minted cherry tomatoes. Certe, you had me at spicy lamb meatballs…but clinched it with goat cheese. Everything seems great on paper, but did the execution stack up?
