Midtown Snapshots: Sidewalk White Sauce

whitesauce

Spotted this little treasure trove around 11:20 a.m. yesterday on the ledge in front of the famous Halal Cart on the SE corner 53rd & 6th.  It looked like the owner was delivering it, like a Brinks Truck would deliver money to a bank. In fact, I’ll bet if there was a choice between stealing a bag of money, or a crate full of white sauce from the 53rd St. cart (and you could only take one) 9 out of 10 Midtown Lunchers would probably take the sauce. (Especially if you got those two squeeze bottles full of red sauce in the deal…)

I Thought Eric Ripert Cared: I'll admit I was kind of excited when I saw the words: "Hi, Midtown Lunch. Eric Ripert is now following your updates on Twitter."  Too bad it was a big hoax.

You Decide: How Does Golosi Measure Up

DSC01694

Stopped by Golosi (the new pizza/gelato place on Park Ave. btw. 41+42nd) today and, as promised, my pizza purchase came with a free scoop of gelato. (They didn’t skimp either… there is a lot of room left in the cup because they gave me the larger cup so I could take it to go with a lid.)  The Yolato looking signs are still up, so it probably is the same gelato as before (but I can’t say that for sure).  As for the pizza… well, I’m not good as passing judgement on pizza, so I may leave this one up to you guys.

On the plus side, they only charged me $2.71 for my 3 inches (which made no sense since supposedly it’s 99 cents an inch) and the slice they cut me was actually 4 inches! (I measured)  Tasted pretty good, although I can’t decide if it’s going to be good enough to replace any of the goto pizza spots in the area.  The by the inch thing is fun, but I could see it getting pricey once you start getting the slices with toppings.  My slice was almost big enough to be worth it, but they also gave me 4 inches (I only paid for free three.)  There are certain places where you feel like you are getting a great deal, and others where you never quite feel like the price works out in your favor (regardless of whether it does or doesn’t.)  This probably falls into the latter category.

Speaking of toppings, they had the hot dog topped pizza- and it’s crazier looking than you could imagine.  Check it out after the jump…

At Lunch Now: Spring is Here

You know how you can tell that Winter is officially over? The Mister
Softee Trucks are out in full force. (I hope this doesn’t jinx it.)

Papa Perrone Completely Redeems Themselves With New Sandwich Challenge Entry

It just goes to show, it’s never too late to change things up.  People were pretty underwhelmed by the meatball sliders that the Papa Perrone truck entered into the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge.  Complaints were lodged in the comments, and Papa Perrone himself responded…  not just in the comments, but with a brand new sandwich entry.  Eggplant Parm + Meatballs + Garlic Bread = Full and Complete Redemption.

Check it out after the jump.

Rafiqi’s Tries To Intimidate New Mexican Cart From 49th Street

DSC01679

I stopped by the new, second location, of the El Rey del Sabor cart yesterday (on 49th btw. Lex+3rd) and discovered a few little tidbits.  First, for those of you wondering what happened to the teriyaki/udon cart that popped up in that same spot a month ago… the new Mexican cart is the ramen cart.  The El Rey del Sabor people bought the udon cart (and the spot, in theory) and converted it into a second branch of their popular Mexican food cart (the first one is on 60th and 3rd).  The teriyaki guys gave no reason for wanting to sell their cart after only a month and a half, but the El Rey del Sabor people suspect it might be because they were intimidated by the street meat vendors in the area.

The same intimidation El Rey del Sabor has been feeling since setting up shop two days ago on that corner.

Free Gelato Confirmation: Wanted to clear up any confusion in the comments about today's free gelato giveaway at Golosi, the new pizza by the inch place on Park Ave. btw. 41+42nd (in the old Yolato space.) From the PR guy: "Customers will get one free scoop of gelato of their choice with pizza purchase. The minimum pizza purchase is three inches." That's pretty clear, which is good considering the history this space has with free gelato giveaways. They open at 11 a.m.

Midtown Has 2 of the 3 Best Matzoh Ball Soups in NYC

Always Hungry has a round up of the best matzo ball soups in New York City, and surprisingly they only liked three versions.  Even more surprising is that 2 of the 3 are right here in Midtown: Sarge’s (on 3rd btw. 36+37th) and 2nd Ave. Deli (on 33rd btw. Lex+3rd).  Carnegie Deli’s version got a C (barely passing) and the Cafe Edison (on 47th btw. B’way+8th) was totally left out!  I wonder how they would have stacked up.

Big Burger News: We're hearing rumors that a certain good burger place might be bringing back a certain egg and hash brown topped burger as a possible entry into the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge. And if it happens, it will be served during lunchtime. Details coming soon...

FreeFoods is Adding a Few More Sandwiches for the “ML Crowd”

Duck Pastrami Reuben. Photo by Food In Mouth

FreeFoods NYC may be expensive and a lot of their food might be completely against what Midtown Lunch stands for, but you can’t fault them for trying.  Their Duck Pastrami Reuben was one of the best entries of the entire Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge, and apparently they’ve got some more similar offerings on the way.

“Just letting you know we’re planning on launching the Spring/Summer Menu April 20th and we’ve added some great new sandwiches that we feel are considerably closer to what the ML crowd might be looking for, after learning a bit more about what they enjoy as a function of your website, so thank you.”

A sneak peek at a few of the new additions (custom made for you!) after the jump:
