‘wichcraft’s Mint Ice Creamwich Is A Perfect Summer Treat

Last summer, Blondie wrote about the then new ‘wichcraft ice cream stand in Bryant Park, near the carousel. She loved the vanilla ice cream between peanut butter cookies sandwich, which looked great, but I’m a mint chip kinda girl. Wouldn’t you know it, ‘wichcraft’s ice cream stand is offering two new ice cream sandwich flavors (not surprisingly, they’re seasonal… just like their new summer sandwiches), peanut butter & strawberry and … chocolate & mint chip. Sold!

Same Great Food Even After the Price Hike at Yagura

Yagura Sometimes when a place gets a facelift the quality of food goes down. I was thinking about that when I was standing in line at Yagura. Back in February we mentioned Yagura had put on a new coat of paint, the menu board actually lights up and freshly baked creme puffs can now be found off to one side. The much needed facelift came with a price hike as well, bring them a bit closer to Cafe Zaiya and Sunrise Mart. While I was tempted to get the oyakodon again, I decided to go for the $6.99 chicken karaage instead because I was in the mood for some Japanese fried chicken chunks.

So how was it?

Move Over Korea, Japanese Food Trucks Are All The Rage

Korean tacos from a truck are so 2011. While Domo Taco brought Japanese flavors to tortillas, two new food trucks are focusing on more authentic Japanese dishes. Andrea broke the news last month that a brand new food truck called Okadaman will be serving Japanese izakaya food (minus the copious amounts of booze, unfortunately). Well, now we got more specific word of their planned schedule and it sounds like the primary stomping ground will be in Midtown. Woo hoo!

The menu will have a little something for everybody – as long as you like scallion pancakes, fried chicken, noodles, or octopus balls. And they’ll be offering about four lunch combos in the $6 – $8 price range where you can mix and match a few of their menu items. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I love Japanese bar food and I’m terribly excited for their launch. The plan is to hit the streets next Friday, June 22 and switch between Midtown East and West during the weekday lunch rushes with extra locations downtown for dinner. Of course, many trucks think Midtown is the place to go right out of the gate and then are overwhelmed by the crowds and parking restrictions, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the plan changes once they launch. But let’s hope not.

But wait.  There’s more.  Another Japanese food truck is launching today as well…

Beacon’s Side Door Open for Business: Just an FYI... Beacon's Side Door (on 56th btw. 5+6th) is open once again, serving up tasty burgers and pig sandwiches for the hungry summer crowds. We've had some pretty good experiences here in the past, and hopefully this season will be no exception. Welcome back, Side Door!

Contributor Stalking (The “Nachos and Hot Dogs and Sliders” Edition)

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (We’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Korean BBQ Nachos
Brownie homemade take on the Kimchi Taco Truck’s Korean BBQ Nachos

This week, Brian began his search for New York’s best hot dogs, Donny checked out the noodle counter at No Name Bar in Greenpoint and Rachel had brunch at Cafe Mogador. Meanwhile Blondie and Brownie were researching for their upcoming book “New York ala Cart” by learning about the roast strawberry gelato in Washington Square Park and testing recipes for the Korean BBQ Nachos from Kimchi Taco Truck’s and I spent the weekend eating my way through Montreal.

Elsewhere in the ML Universe… Andrea gets a first look at a patriotic new slider cart downtown, In Los Angeles, Zach found the secret to getting great Thai food in West Hollywood and in Philadelphia, guest blogger Zoe ate mounds of roast beef on a sandwich and fries.

Lunch Hour Exhibit Launches Next Week at the New York Public Library

Next Friday is going to be a big day for us pro-lunchers, the New York Public Library will be holding the best exhibit ever to grace the Schwarzman Building (that’s the one on 42nd+5th with the lions): “Lunch Hour NYC“. This exhibit has been months in the making, I first heard about it over on librarian Rebecca Federman’s blog Cooked Books in November, and have been patiently waiting for it to open ever since. The exhibit will span the creation of the office lunch (terrible bosses giving people less than a half hour to eat), school lunches, a recreated Automat (no word on the Mobile-Mat that once appeared in Bryant Park), street vendors (naturally), lunch menus, and everything in between. Being as it’s at the NYPL, visiting the exhibit will be free for you and the perfect way to spend your lunch hour.

Check out a cool video promoting the exhibit, after the jump…

Eating All Of The ‘wichcraft Summer Sammies

I’m a big fan of the quality of ingredients you get at ‘wichcraft. Actually, I’m a big fan of anything Tom Colicchio does. I don’t mind trading quantity for quality here and there, so when they updated their seasonal items for summer, you can bet I was in Bryant Park, standing in line to try them. And by “them,” obviously I mean all of them! Although I don’t think any of these are menu newbies, some are definitely old friends that I was happy to see return to the mix (others … not so much).

A New Midtown Chop’t Means Today is Free Salad Day

I can’t say we’re the biggest fans of salad here on Midtown Lunch, but FREE salad?  That’s a different story.  Tomorrow Chop’t is opening a new Midtown location on 56th Street btw. 6+7th, so as is tradition today is a live training day for the new staff… aka FREE SALAD DAY!  The free for all training starts at 11:30am and ends at 1:30pm, or when the salad runs out.  Freeloaders, prepare to engage.
