First Look At Kimchi Taco Truck’s New Specialty Tacos

Korean tacos, once a novelty, are now available from a number of trucks that frequent Midtown. It can’t be easy for truck owners to differentiate themselves from the pack, but the Kimchi Taco Truck is doing just that by introducing some new menu items, including Korean fried chicken tacos. The updated menu includes burritos as well, but I went straight for the new tacos, ordering two Korean fried chicken tacos and one new fish taco. Usually the truck’s combination deal means three tacos cost $7 and four tacos are $9. However, if you want one of the new specialty tacos, which I obviously did, each taco will cost one dollar extra, which brought my combo to exactly $10. Pretty steep for a taco trio, but was it worth the price?

Kimchi Taco Truck Menu Adding Korean Fried Chicken Tacos

Korean. Fried. Chicken. Tacos. Do I have your attention? Let me explain. The Kimchi Taco Truck is ringing in 2013 with new items on their mexi-korean menu. Starting Monday (January 14) look for burritos stuffed with Korean BBQ short rib, seared spicy pork, grilled chicken or tofu edamame falafel. Korean burritos are nothing new, but there are a couple new taco options as well, including a fish taco served with mango salsa and a Korean fried chicken taco. Korean fried chicken taco? I’m definitely down for trying that!

But that’s not all … to celebrate the launch, the truck will be running a promotion next week (from January 14th to 18th) where every tenth customer will receive deals on the new menu items, including free or $1 tacos and $5 burritos. Not the tenth customer? Don’t worry, special promotions will also run on their twitter account and facebook page. The truck plans to be in Midtown on Wednesday at 55th btw. 6+7th and Friday at 47th and Park 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., so I’ll meet you on line for those Korean fried chicken tacos!

Kimchi Taco Truck Makes a Mean “Asian-Style” Falafal

Kimchi Taco Truck line

The big falafel news this week was, of course, the news that Freddy the Falafel King of Astoria is now set up in Midtown on 53rd & Park.  But did you know that the Kimchi Taco Truck also does falafel?  Their tofu/edamame falafel has been a popular menu option for awhile, and recently I learned that they have tweaked the recipe to give it a little more punch and to make it crispier and a little closer to the Israeli/Mediterranean falafel that’s many of us are used to. I’m always up for falafel so I had to check it out. Read more »

Kimchi Taco Truck Gets Finer With Age

kimchi taco truckSimilar to wine, as kimchi ages, it gets appreciably finer (for most tastes). And it seems that after nearly a year on the road, The Kimchi Taco Truck has finally found its groove, and is turning out some pretty fantastic product. To be brutally honest, I wasn’t impressed with the tacos from this truck the first time I had them. They were horribly dry and woefully wimpy in flavor, so much so that I couldn’t promote them on Midtown lunch in good conscience. Instead, I’ve stuck to the kimchi bowls and their awesomely low-brow ‘kimcheese steaks’. However, spurred on by yesterday’s food truck promotion by Mastercard, I gave the tacos another shot, and was glad that I did.

Kimchi Taco Truck’s Kimchi Bowl Is Worth the Wait

Have Korean tacos gone the way of the cupcake, or the ‘bacon-on-everything’ trend? We at Midtownlunch are certainly guilty of perpetuating the hype, whether it be stalking Café Duke’s Korean tacos or getting maybe a little too excited for the Korilla BBQ truck. So when the Kimchi Taco Truck broke into the food truck scene earlier this year, I made it a goal to eat my way through the menu and save the tacos for last. A couple of weeks ago, Brownie beat me to the Kim-Cheesesteak and rice cakes, but I recently had a chance to try their kimchi bowls and couple of their side dishes.

As it turns out, like the Kimchi Taco Truck’s Kim-cheesestak, their other non-taco options also warrant a visit to the truck.

Checking Out Kimchi Taco Truck’s Kim-Cheesesteak

Kimchi Taco Truck line

Speaking of cheesesteaks… I’ve not so secretly been stalking following the new Kimchi Taco Truck ever since I first heard about them. The Downtown section of ML further piqued my interest, but I missed their first couple of visits to Midtown, once getting there just as they ran out of food. Well, the other week I finally I made it in time to check out their kim-cheesesteak.

Kimchi Taco Truck Trying for Midtown Midweek!

Kimchi Taco Truck
Ever since I first heard about the Kimchi Taco Truck, I’ve kept this truck on my radar. There were some false starts (they were originally going to hit the streets in the fall, then in January), this weekend on Twitter I saw a very promising tweet (their first since January 30th):

FINALLY..!!! Thxs for being patient everyone; rain or shine Monday (2/28th) -Court Square, Long Island City (45th Ave & Jackson) @11:30 a.m.

I immediately tweeted back asking when they’re planning on coming to midtown (LIC’s nice and all, but doesn’t help my lunch!) and they tweeted back “Hope to be there midweek.”

Check out their menu after the jump. Read more »

Kimchi Truck Taco Truck is At Least Two Weeks Away From Midtown

Last month we told you that the Kimchi Taco Truck was supposed to hit the streets sometime this month.  Last week Time Out New York said this was going to be the week, and as early as yesterday Diner’s Journal and Fork in the Road were reporting the same.  Sadly the owners decided to push the opening date back one more week to “iron out a few kinks”.  They plan on doing some trial runs starting the 24th, but probably won’t make it to Midtown until at least a week later.   That’s ok.  We can wait… in the meantime you can get a sneak peak at their menu over on Grub Street.
