Totto Ramen to Expand!: Great news from Zagat this morning... Totto Ramen (on 52nd btw. 8+9th) is going to be opening a second location in the West 50s.  The bad news?  It'll be closer to 10th Ave. than Midtown.  The good news?  Maybe it will at least make the original location a bit less packed.

Katsuhama’s Oyakodon Is The Best In Midtown

I know, after all the oyakodon posts on this blog, to write that headline will most likely cause some controversy (especially with Donny T.), but having grown up in Tokyo for eight years of my childhood, I have eaten (and actually cook at home) a lot of oyakodon, and the one at Katsuhama is, in fact, the best I’ve had in Midtown.

Spring Means There’s No Excuse For Not Lunching at the Eggs Travaganza Cart

Eggs Travaganza Cart I’m a little embarrassed to admit that as a lover of all egg dishes I still haven’t been to the Eggs Travaganza cart.  I know it’s not right, but in my defense it’s been pretty damn cold. So now that it’s full on Spring time, I have no more excuse to walk the two avenues eight blocks for some egg burrito action. When I found the cart on the corner of 52nd & Park Ave, it took me a while to go through the menu and it took me even longer to decide what to eat since everything sounded delicious. I was thinking maybe I’ll just grab a few tacos, steak and eggs naturally. Sadly they said they were out of tortillas for tacos but they could still make a steak and eggs burrito ($7). That to me sounded just fine.

Donny had his best meal of his recent LA trip at Plan Check, Brian celebrated St. Patty’s Day with Brooklyn Brewery’s new Irish Stout, Blondie says the best whoopie pies in town may be the ones sold at Luke’s Lobster, Brownie made Mad Men cupcakes ahead of the season five premiere, Rachel got barbecue from Salt Lick down in Austin and I took a tour of brunch spots around New York.

Around ML universe… Zach is excited and perplexed about Miyata Menji, a new West LA ramen spot, Andrea took a second look at look at a generic deli turned burrito stand Downtown and Jamie went to Philly’s Italian Market and got Tamales.

Bryant Park Continues to Be Off-Limits for Trucks

We noticed this tweet today from Luke’s Lobster when asked if they plan on returning to their regular Bryant Park spot. Turns out the police have continued to crack down on food trucks parking in that area and have threatened “severe penalties” if they continue to show up. We used to see Taim around these parts at least once a week and even the smaller guys (namely the Mediterranean Grill truck who briefly parked on 39th) have been victims of police harassment. This was a prime location for many trucks and a great lunch option for those that work nearby and don’t want to settle with the food kiosks inside the park. I wonder if this has anything to do with Dan Biederman, who recently called street vendors “terrible citizens” and just so happens to be the head of the Bryant Park Corporation.

What Bouchon Bakery’s Short Rib Sandwich Lacks in Size, It Makes Up For in Flavor

Braised Short Rib

Like we told you yesterday, Rock Center’s Bouchon Bakery debuted new sandwiches recently: a braised short rib on pain au lait, and a smoked turkey on multi-grain. The braised short rib clocks in at just under $10 pre-tax, involves a caramelized onion mousse, fontina, and roasted button mushrooms. I love mushrooms and short ribs, so I went for it.

Fahima Halal Cart Pops Up on 3rd Avenue With a Decent Curry Chicken

Fahima Halal Food It’s very rare for me to know exactly what I want to eat for lunch when I head out.  As a result I usually end up walking around and around until I finally get tired and give in to whatever is closest.  But on Monday I headed out knowing exactly what I wanted: street meat.  And not just any street meat- but Rafiqi’s, the only street meat near my office I had yet to try (not counting the taste at last year’s Street Meat Palooza that I remember for its olives.) I walked straight to the corner of 47th & 3rd Ave and was surprised to find that in place of the big red truck was the Fahima Halal cart. (Apparently I had missed this news about them moving from their spot on 45th btw. 6+7th!) Since I was there already I decided to get their chicken over rice. Then I was asked if I wanted the curry chicken. I love curry chicken so I said yes please!
