Where to Get Your Holiday Treats in Midtown

Zabar's
This is it. Hanukkah starts tonight at sundown, and this weekend is full of Christmas. Do you know where you’re picking up special holiday treats for your employees–bosses, I’m looking at you–or to impress your in-laws?! Though Midtown might be lacking in the bakery department, there are still a few spots around to pick up some holiday desserts! I did some scouting on where to pick up everything from dreidel cookies to bûches.

You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

2011 saw a few new falafel spots open up in Midtown, but are any of them worthy enough to challenge Taim Mobile- the reigning lunch champ.  The food crackdown has meant fewer visits to Midtown for the super popular truck, so maybe that opens things up for one of the old favorites to sneak in.  Here are the nominees for the best falafel in Midtown…

Vote for your favorite, after the jump…

Num Pang’s Tofu Sandwich is Surprisingly Good

Num Pang

Yes, I know, tofu. It’s worse than just vegetarian. I went to Num Pang (41st btw 3rd+Lex) preparing to try their roasted fig and bacon, or even the roasted turkey. Unfortunately roasted fig wasn’t on the menu–not sure if it’s completely off or not–and they were out of roasted turkey for the day. And seeing how it is the holidays and I have this thing about eating every holiday cookie I can get my hands on, I went with the tofu over the spare rib. And I wasn’t disappointed!

Every year a select group of Midtown Lunchers convene in Bryant Park for a giant chicken and lamb over rice taste off known as Street Meat Palooza. This year Comme Ci Comme Ca shocked everybody by taking the title with their unique brand of chicken and lamb merguez over rice with white sauce and hot sauce.  Agree or disagree, here’s your chance to sound off. And with last year’s winner Kwik Meal shedding customers from a recent price hike, it could be anybody’s game this year.  Here are the nominees for best street meat in Midtown:

in 2010 we were all about the huge leap forward in Midtown coffee.  This year, everybody else seemed to take notice.  2011 will also be remembered as the year that Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf hit Midtown, and the last year that Rock Center was Blue Bottle-less.  Will last year’s surprise winner, Financier, be able to hold off JOE, Culture and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf to repeat?   Here are the nominees for best coffee in Midtown:

At Lunch Now: Rickshaw Dumpling Kiosk Arrives In Times Sq

Rickshaw Dumplings tweeted last week that they were opening in Times Square today, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Their  shipping container kiosk got delivered to Times Square today, but as of a few minutes ago they were still on the roof of the thing pouring gas/fuel into something and there are unpacked boxes inside.  The last of the kiosks sits in the pedestrian mall between 42nd and 43rd streets in Times Square, closer to 43rd. We’ll keep checking in to see when they actually open!

It’s hard to believe that two years ago Menchanko Tei and Sapporo were fighting it out for the title of best ramen in Midtown.  Now there’s Hide Chan and Totto Ramen, whose lines can sometime make them feel like baby Ippudos.  This year Tabata got thrown into the mix, to some pretty strong reviews (including a write up in the New York Times!?)  Is it strong enough to unseat last year’s winner?  Or will Totto Ramen reign supreme again.  Here are the nominees for Best Ramen in Midtown:

3 More Lunches That Midtown Needs from Hawaii

About a year ago, Chris H. traveled to Hawaii and reported back on 5 plate lunches he thought Midtown Lunch’ers would enjoy from his travels, including Hawaiian favorite loco moco. As I write this, I’m enjoying my final hours in Honolulu, and I have found myself thinking along the same lines — wishing a few items from my trip would find themselves in Midtown one day for ML’ers to enjoy (none of which appear on Hawaiian Island Grill menu!)
