Milano Deli Becomes Slightly Less Generic Cafe Bistro

_MG_0429

I never had any great love for Milano Italian Gourmet the (arguably) generic deli on 34th btw. Mad+5th. A co-worker of mine used to call the place ‘Bag of air’ because there was usually more air in the bag they gave you than food. Still, being literally the closest place to buy food from my office, it’s always been a go-to for a quick five minute lunch on hectic days. Last week Lunch’er “Goats” noticed that they had changed their name to Cafe Bistro, so I stopped by today to investigate.

They do in fact have a new owner, and despite the name it is neither a cafe nor a bistro. In addition to the salads, panini and such, there is also a menu of ‘international’ sandwiches featuring American, Italian, French and German varieties. I can’t say it’s particularly exciting, although I have to admit mild curiosity about the ‘Sloppy Joe,’ listed as German – and filled with meatloaf and bacon. Intriguing or terrible? I’m not sure. Has anyone else checked it out? Let us know in the comments.

Mile End Smoked Meat & Stumptown Now Available at Vic’s Bagel Bar!

I’d heard about Montreal smoked meat sandwiches but I didn’t know much about them nor had I ever been in the vicinity of one, much less eaten one. It sounds (and looks) like something I’d enjoy immensely though. Cured and smoked meat, mustard, bread. All things I like. So when we were tipped that Vic’s Bagel Bar (3rd btw. 36+37th) was now carrying meats from Mile End Deli, a Brooklyn establishment known for authentic Montreal smoked meat, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try this north-of-the-border specialty.

BOGO Katsu Today and Tomorrow at Yushi

Yushi
Yushi (on 47th btw Park+Lex) is at it again, folks. When word came out about their new baked chicken katsu, it was the right news at the right time for me. I love katsu, it’s Japanese fried goodness, but sometimes I can’t afford to eat something so heavy that only ends in a food coma. My boss has been frowning on my food comas of late. I understand that baked katsu is a little wrong, a little disrespectful to the Katsu gods, but Yushi basks on the healthier side of life and they wanted to bring it on over. And since sharing is caring, Yushi is offering buy one, get one today and tomorrow!

I take the plunge, after the jump…

Does Your Work Coffee Suck?: If you wish the coffee in your kitchen at work was better, Serious Eats has your fix. Yesterday their coffee correspondent posted a handy guide to improving your workplace coffee based on changes she made at Serious Eats HQ. Or you can just do what most of us do and go to one of these places.

Contributor Stalking: Chairman Bao; Vegewiches

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (They’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Pork Belly Bun from Chairman Bao in San Francisco. Photo by Blondie.

Blondie was in San Francisco over the weekend checking out their food truck scene, Brownie was (presumably) at Shopsin’s enjoying the fact that they are now open on Sundays, and Ultraclay splurged for a lunch at the newly open John Dory Oyster Bar at the Ace Hotel.

In the rest of the ML Universe… Andrea reluctantly tried the vegetarian banh mi at the Downtown Baoguette, Jamie surprisingly enjoyed a vegetarian cheesesteak in Philly, and my favorite Iranian sandwich shop in L.A. just opened a sit down restaurant.

What Passes For a Chowhound These Days?: We're certainly aware that the way we grossly stuff our faces on a daily basis our taste in lunch is not for everybody, but I was kind of surprised to see this kind of language on Chowhound. Isn't dysentery precisely what you're looking to get when you mine for places on Chowhound? Oh, and by the way... don't knock the fake shrimp until you try them!  Soooo good.

Izakaya Moku Gives Up on Lunch

IMG_1570

It looks like Izakaya Moku has joined Arang in giving up on the lunch crowd. I passed by yesterday afternoon and noticed the curtains closed on the upstairs Japanese restaurant. I went in to check it out and found no one inside. The door was open, so I peeked in and it was a ghost town. Following up on the website, they now list their hours as opening at 5pm daily. I can’t say I’d been back since checking it out in the spring, but I still mourn the loss of any lunch service in the area… except maybe the Pizzacones.

Soup’s on at Negi-Ya (aka Washoku Cafe)

_MG_7023

The random swings in temperature over the last few weeks probably have a lot to do with the coughing and hacking I’ve been hearing up and down the rows of cubicles at work. It’s getting to be about that time when the office cold starts spreading. Hoping to preempt the first cold of the season, I headed to Negi-Ya (on 37th btw. Mad+5th), formerly Washoku Cafe, to fortify myself with noodles and rich, warm broth.
