Of Course All Those Soup Man Fans Were Tourists!: Yesterday's disappointing re-opening of Soup Kitchen International just another location of the Original Soup Man chain, was a mob scene- and Feast has a great video of the line. (Spoiler: Everybody was from out of town.) They also spoke to Reggie Jackson! (The *real* Reggie Jackson.)

Trying Out McCormick & Schmick’s $10 Lunch Special

_MG_9959 - Version 2

I wasn’t immediately excited when I read about the $10 lunch special at the bar of McCormick & Schmick’s. I like cheap lunch specials at a fancy restaurant just as much as the next guy (i’m looking at you burger from Wolfgang’s, but schlepping up to Rockefeller Center didn’t really seem worth it in this heat. Then I saw that a half po’ boy and lobster bisque was among the options – I reconsidered. I love a po’ boy and haven’t had a one since our ML Team excursion to the Grand Central Oyster Bar. Clearly I was past due.

See what ten bucks gets you after the jump.

Ichi Umi Buffet Has Reopened: From Lunch'er Wailun: "After being shuttered for weeks, it looks like the Japanese buffet joint Ichi Umi (on 32nd btw. Mad+5th) has reopened." I think a field trip with our competitive eating friends is in order... uh... you know.  To make sure it's still good.

Lunch’er Chris Reports: Taste of Summer at Rock Center (and Midtown’s First Taste of Bill’s Bar & Burger)

Back in May Lunch’er “Chris” was kind enough to tell us about Arirang’s kal gook soo, and the soup from the Korean Noodle Soup cart on 49th. Yesterday he checked out the Taste of Summer event going on in Rock Center during lunch through Thursday, and filed this report for those who were considering checking it out…

There’s nothing like a generous tip, and thanks to yesterdays tip about the “Taste of Summer” thing going on in front of Rock Center (which includes a sneak peek of the much anticipated Bill’s Bar & Burger), I rushed over to check it out. Just like last year, Rockefeller Center has beckoned a selection of restaurants from the subterranean corridors in order to vend a budget friendly (almost all items are under $10) taste of their wares on the ground level main plaza. In the midst of the lineup of chain restaurants, harmless delis and upscale steakhouses, are there any bright spots in Rock Center? And what’s this hubbub over Bill’s Bar & Burger?

Find out after the jump…

Best Public Spaces to Lunch in NYC: Glad to see so many people jumping on our "lunch is the best meal of all time" bandwagon!  As part of the the whole "Take Back Your Lunch" thing Steven A. Shaw (a former Profiled Midtown Lunch'er) told the NY Post about his 10 favorite spots to eat lunch away from his desk- and more than half of them are in Midtown.

Spice Fusion Closed by the DOH? (Or Maybe They Just Don’t Want that “C”)

According to Gothamist the Department of Health will start putting up letter grades in restaurant windows next week, and according to the Post over 6000 restaurants will be receiving C’s (score of 28 or more.) In related news Spice Fusion (the popular Indian buffet on 8th Ave. btw. 47+48th) got a 38 last month and are now “temporarily closed”. Also in danger of getting C’s according to the latest numbers posted to the DOH website: Minar, Teriyaki Boy, Olympic Pita, Yagura, and Pizza by Certe (!?!) Plus there are a ton more right on the cusp.

Bill’s Bar & Burger Sneak Peek This Week!?: This just in from a tipster... apparently restaurants have tables set up in the Rock Center plaza and are serving low priced tasting plates (under $10) in honor of restaurant week. Tri Tip Grill, Bill’s Bar & Burger (sneak peek!), Ben & Jerry’s ($1 scoops!), and more. The tables will be set up until about 2:30/3p today, and then again tomorrow and Thursday during lunch.

At Lunch Now: Meet the Old Soup Man, Same as the New Soup Man?

Soup Kitchen International aka the Soup Nazi aka The Original Soup Man reopened their original location today (on 55th and 8th Ave.) and the requisite madhouse ensued. Eater was (rightfully) skeptical but being a huge S.K.I fan I had to check it out for myself.

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Katie”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Katie, an economic consultant with a sweet tooth- who hates cilantro and isn’t sold on the Street Sweets truck just yet.

Name: Katie

Age: 23

Occupation: Economic Consultant

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 6th Ave. btw. 45+46th

Favorite Kind of Food: Dessert

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Anything with cilantro

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Favorite savory meal/Seamless dinner option: the Eggplant moussaka at Bread and Olive on 45th. Favorite sweet/overall meal- Waffle from Wafels and Dinges on Thursdays on 46th and 6th. Liege with nutella, spekuloos, whipped cream, sometimes dulce de leche to mix it up. Other favorite spots include: Treats Truck Fridays on 45th and 6th – I usually get a bag to “share” with friends after work but wind up enjoying it all as my personal lunch/afternoon snack. And I know there are judgers, but as a healthy option I also enjoy a salad from Cafe Europa. If you pay attention, it’s priced a lot better than most competitors. Finally, I’ve yet to try Two Bros’ Pizza on 46th btw 5th and 6th, and while I love Little Italy Pizza, Two Bros is next on the agenda- it’s hard to beat those prices!
