Pizza Pizza’s “Slip Slice” Is Kind of Genius

Sometimes you see an idea involving food and realize it’s something that perhaps should be adopted more widely. That was the case when I saw the Slip Slice on the menu at Pizza Pizza on Pearl St. (nr. Stone), the sister restaurant to Burger Burger a couple of doors down. So what is this item? It involves two slices of pizza and extra cheese, but you’re going to have to click through for a visual.

Fatty Snack’s Food Is Worth Heading North of $10

I don’t know what’s in the water, but twice in two days on this site we’ve endorsed paying more than $10 for a lunch that may still leave you hungry. Have we gone insane? No, but every once in a while you just have to pay up to eat something good. That’s what you’re going to do at Fatty Snack, the new kiosk joining Ed’s Lobster Bar and Quality Burger by the marina outside the World Financial Center. All of the main items on the menu hover around the $10 mark and since you’re probably going to want a side and/or drink it’s going to get expensive. But judging by the items I tried it’s totally worth it. Read more »

The Strange, Deconstructed Bibimbap At Broadway Gourmet

The Broadway Gourmet Food Market is not somewhere I would ever think of getting lunch. First of all it’s in the super touristy block of Broadway between Prince & W. Houston streets, and second of all it’s first impression is of a terrible overpriced generic deli. But a couple of weeks ago I was in desperate need of something to drink and popped in, only to discover that they serve legit-looking tacos and burritos…and bibimbap. The low price of the second item called to me and I decided to return and try it out. Read more »

Nixtamalito Makes Jury Duty, Working At City Hall So Much Better

The new kiosk venture from Tortilleria Nixtamal, Nixtamalito, opened late last week where Choza Taqueria used to be. They opened so quickly, in fact, that the signs for Choza are still up as well as a menu from something that was there selling breakfast sandwiches before that. I really liked the tacos at Choza and was sad to hear that they closed. When I heard that Nixtamalito was coming from the people making some of the best corn tortillas out there, I really wanted to run over and get a tamale, but alas President Obama was in lower Manhattan that day, and large crowds of people plus barricades meant no tamales for me. The following day I was determined to eat there, and so were a lot of other people judging by the line that stretched long even after 1 p.m.

$5 Burritos At Toloache Are A Good Way To Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

The stars aligned yesterday as I was trying to decide what I wanted for lunch, and my brain randomly replied “burrito.” The nearest source of decent burritos to my office is Toloache Taqueria on Maiden Lane (btw. William & Gold) and it was a good excuse to go back there since I’d already tried their tacos and pozole. When I got there I saw the above sign in the window advertising $5 burritos on Cinco de Mayo which just happens to be today. What will you get for that small amount of money? on this day of excessive drinking? Photos and analysis straight ahead.

America’s Next Great Restaurant Is Actually Pretty…Good

The words “healthy” and “soul food” would probably send shivers of terror down many people’s spines, but these things no longer surprise me. It seems like every new place opening in or near the Financial District is trying to make their food healthy-sounding. And this is what you get from Soul Daddy, a new restaurant at the South St. Seaport, begat from a reality TV show, that we first showed you Tuesday. The restaurant takes soul food, puts it in a space that is reminiscent of Chipotle, and tries to let you eat lunch without having a heart attack afterward. Fair enough, but how does it taste?   Read more »

Trying Out The “Cajun” Items At Maggie’s Out Of Sheer Curiosity

Ever since Tokyo Kitchen closed Cajun Maggie’s has become the last remaining dodgy place to eat on the block of John St. between Nassau & Broadway. They are even classy enough to have someone handing out samples outside the store, just like at the mall. I knew Kevin went there to try out the oh so Cajun specialty of bourbon chicken, but I was interested in their take on some other actual Cajun items on the menu like shrimp etouffee and blackened fish. I wasn’t going in with high expectations of having the food transport me back to New Orleans but would it even be vaguely passable?
