Toloache Taqueria: Do We Finally Have Good Mexican In The FiDi?

In what may have been the quickest turnaround of making a sandwich shop into a taco one, Toloache Taqueria opened last week on Maiden Lane (btw. Gold & William). This was a big deal for lunch’ers in the Financial District because we are barren down here for good tacos and tortas.  I was there during their first real day of service, because someone had to eat fancified Mexican food for research purposes.

You can tell they really used a lot of the elements from previous tenant Swich in designing this place including the giant chalkboard menu in the front. Actually it looks mostly the same with the addition of electric yellow tables and some fancy black tile. And hopefully the insane orange sign out front is intended to cover the old Swich one instead of being permanent.

Since it’s a taqueria I opted for an order of tacos ($8.27) although the tortas ($6.43) sitting behind the glass did look tasty and are a good size for the price. All of the items on the menu have weird prices – I guess so they’ll come out to an even amount after tax. They do have burritos, salads and some interesting soups like pozole and fideos but I mostly saw people eating tortas or tacos.

They let you mix and match taco fillings, which worked out well for review purposes. There’s a good selection of fillings and I went for one chicken, one Mexican chocolate glazed pork and one suadero (negra modelo braised brisket). The pork and chicken were both really good, and my least favorite was the brisket because it was pretty dry. I kicked myself after I had ordered and noticed there was a huitlocoche filling way down at the bottom of the wall menu along with tilapia. The corn tortillas didn’t disintegrate even though there was only one per taco.

This is a great addition to the stretch of Maiden that mostly has chain restaurants. Between that and Caliente Mexican Grill the FiDi is definitely getting stronger on the Mexican food front. And any restaurant that serves Mexican Coke can’t be all bad.

  • In total agreement.. it looks like we had the exact same lunch!

I did find the pork/chicken a bit on the salty side, though the flavors were great.

Overall a great add. I expect lines to build up. Quick.

  • I tried the chicken torta today. It was ok, but not great. The meat was rather dry. I’m definitely going with tacos next time.

  • I tried the chicken torta also (for some reason) and it was a passable sandwich but it really doesn’t sate my yen for a torta. It’s a decent workday lunch, and maybe the tacos are better, but a definite meh.

  • Looks a little closer to the mark than Mad Dog & Beans. But I need delivery! I can’t be expected to leave the building for lunch for the next three months, you know.

@donuts4dinner: I would bet they’ll start doing delivery. They’d be kind of crazy not to.
And it sounds like the tacos are the clear winner here.

  • Hope so! I basically live on SeamlessWeb when it’s below 50 degrees.

  • I had the tilapia tacos (yes I know I’m 2 weeks behind you guys but I don’t venture out much when the temp. drops). They were very good however I recommend adding guac…something about it paired with the fish was yummo. Chips are eh. Oh and the fish tacos do not come with cheese. So an order of fish tacos, add cheese (approx. $1 extra) and side of guac and chips came out to $13.

Just got the Hongos Burrito. It’s pretty tasty, though at $9, maybe a bit pricy. I also like that it’s a fair amount of food, but not so much that you feel gross after eating the whole thing
