Boi Noodles’ Congee Is Not So Authentic, But Still Tasty

Good Vietnamese food is hard to come by in Midtown, and as we’ve mentioned before, Boi Noodles is about what you’d expect from Vietnamese food in the area. That said, I’ve been curious about the very inexpensive congee on the menu for a few weeks now, and yesterday I finally stopped in to see what it’s all about.

Steak And Egg Taco Is Another Win For The Eggs Travaganza Cart

Eggstravaganza Last time I ate at the Eggs Travaganza cart (which was also my first time) I really wanted the steak and egg taco. Sadly, by the time I got to the cart, they had already sold out of the tortillas to make tacos. I accepted their offer to make the steak and egg in a burrito form. While I had imagined the egg in the burrito to be at least visible, all I saw were steak and rice. I did find the burrito delicious, so the lack of eggs didn’t end up being a big deal.

On my second trip back to the cart, I made sure to go early (1 p.m.), and I was rewarded with the steak and egg taco ($4).

Are Mobile Food Trucks Becoming Less Mobile?

One of the allures of food trucks (aside from cheap, delicious food) is the fact that they are able to move around the city to bring the food to a wide audience. You never know where they will be unless you follow them on Twitter, Facebook or the ML Twitter Tracker. Most have a set schedule from week to week to ensure equal love to all the hungry neighborhoods of New York.

However, more and more food vendors are settling down to one particular neighborhood. In Midtown, Uncle Gussy’s, Jianetto’s Pizza, and Valducci’s can usually be found at the same spot day in and day out. Downtown, you’ll always find Souvlaki GR and Our Heroes. Even Wafels & Dinges have become a little more idle with three of their carts always parked at the same place — one at Columbus Circle and two at Central Park.

Contribtor Stalking (The “Beer & Grilled Cheese” edition)

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (We’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Brian had a round at Hell’s Kitchen’s new bar, Beer Market, Donny had a snack at Huckleberry Bakery in Los Angeles, Blondie fed her grilled cheese craving at Little Meunster in LES, Brownie has started planning out Easter dinner, Rachel made scrambled eggs at home and I remembered the chicharrones I had in Peru.

Elsewhere in the ML universe… Zach is campaigning to keep fish & chips on the menu at Starry Kitchen in Downtown L.A., ML Philly is starting a Weiner Wednesday series surveying hot dog options and Andrea had her second cheesesteak ever(!) at Phil’s Steak truck downtown.

Half Off Johnny Rockets: If you're in the mood for an all-American lunch with a retro feel, this deal for Johnny Rockets may be for you. Living Social is offering $15 for $30-worth of food at the 56th street and 3rd ave location.

Like Curry but Not the Heat? Try NY Biryani Express Cart’s Chicken Curry

NY Biryani ExpressMy recent Fahima Halal Cart post sparked some debate in the comments over chicken curry. (For the record, I tried their curry chicken and thought that it was pretty good.) In the comments, it was clear that I had to trek over to the Trini Paki Boys cart (on 43rd & 6th) for a more delicious curry chicken (according to fellow Lunch’er EaterKnievel). Though I was more curious about this comment about a “baller chicken curry” found at the cart on 45th and 3rd Ave. I knew exactly which cart that was, and I chose the shorter walk to NY Biryani Express over the trek to 6th ave. Until now, I had only tried their chicken and rice, although I guess I should try their kati roll also. But first, the curry!

Video Break: A Traditional Easter Meal at Lan Sheng?

Growing up I usually spent this time of year at a Passover seder, while my friends were going on much livelier Easter egg hunts, so I don’t really have a good sense of what to eat on Easter. But I figured rabbit was probably a good place to start, no? And it turns out Midtown favorite Lan Sheng (on 39th btw. 5+6th) has three different versions on the menu (only the appetizer option is within ML’s budget, but the others are a worthy holiday splurge). So the other day I headed over to check it out and with Clay’s help, I was able to document the fun (much like the St. Patrick’s Day video we did a few weeks back.)

My first Easter meal, caught on video, after the jump.  Enjoy and Happy Bunny Day (does anybody say that?)!!

Snack Box Inches Down Broadway: Snack Box, one of the Times Square kiosks, has moved once again. This time, the shipping container has claimed the spot formerly belonging to the Salume kiosk that disappeared from Broadway between 45th and 46th in January. I guess that doesn't bode well for Salume's return ...

It’s Almost Passover, Get Your Danny Macaroons Fix at Bergdorf’s

Berdorf's Bar 5F

For years I was an avowed coconut hater. I studiously avoided anything with coconut. Over time, however, I’ve discovered that I don’t really hate coconut. I hate people who make horrible things with coconut. Coconut in the right hands can be exceptionally delicious. Take for example the macaroons from Danny Macaroons that I finally tried at Choice Eats. Blondie had been singing their praises forever, but I couldn’t see past my deep dislike of coconut to give them a shot. When I finally did, man, oh, man, they were so good, so, so habit-forming that I had to seek them out in the city and I found them I midtown at a most unexpected location: Bergdorf Goodman’s.
