ML Forums: Trini Pak Specials; Generic Deli Cart

And Now It’s Gone…

Sad news for those of you who thought that Pop Tarts World Cafe would be open through February. According to Newyorkology it closed on December 31th… just a week too late to be included in our saddest losses of 2010 reader’s poll. [via Eater]

Half off Little Thai Kitchen: 53rd btw. 2+3rd has got a bunch of good options, but somehow we've never managed to try out Little Thai Kitchen. Today's Groupon might be just what we needed to change that. Get $10 at LTK for just $5

Have We Mentioned Lately How Good Bann Next Door’s Korean Tacos Are?

Bann Next Door Korean Tacos

Although it looks like Bann Next Door won’t win the category for Best Korean Fast Food, they’ll finish a strong 2nd place, and for good reason – their riff on the Korean taco is still fantastic. Since my original visit over the summer, Bann Next Door’s tacos have made it onto my weekly lunch rotation for a lot of good reasons. The portions are still generous for the $9 price tag, the proteins are capably cooked (the beef bulgogi pictured above is possibly the best rendition of the dish I’ve had north of 35th St.), and they pack a whole hell of a lot of bold flavors onto one disposable plastic tray. Korilla BBQ might be generating all of the Korean taco chatter right now, but as Zagat Buzz succinctly puts it, “this spot is the Korean-taco silent threat”.

Lunch’er Tai Reports: Little Morocco’s Garbage Plate is Back

On Monday we told you that Omar, the original cook on the popular Little Morocco cart, had returned after trying to start up a cart of his own on the Upper East Side. Lunch’er Tai headed over right way, and was kind enough to send this photo and quick report…

I read that Omar was back and immediately swung by to get a fish & falafel combo. He gave me grilled (not fried!) fish, 3 falafel balls, a chickpea & grilled onion slaw, some grilled pita slices, a few french fries, and the standard salad, all over their kickass rice, for five bucks.  Moroccan garbage plate!

Nice.  Sounds like things are back to the way they were.

50% off Kati Roll: If your New Year's resolution to be healthier and save money today's Inbundles deal is right up your alley.  Get $14 worth of Kati Rolls and drinks for just $7, but the catch is it's only good at the location on 39th (btw. 5+6th) and only good with the whole wheat wraps they introduced about a year and a half ago.

Pump Energy Food Gets (Another?) Makeover

Confession time. I’ve been an occasional customer of The Pump for years (hides head in shame). I know there are a lot of haters out there, but for any of you fans who are probably also in hiding, the West 55th Street branch (btw 5th and 6th) reopened yesterday with a completely new look (no more muscle protein shops) and updates to the menu since Zach’s visit last year. Looks like the Dionysus plates have been replaced with dishes made with all local, seasonal and sustainable. I couldn’t care less about the new vintage look and antique bric-a-brac, but I am interested to see how the food stacks up. I’ll swing by soon to check it out. In the meantime, early adopters feel free to let us know what you think of the new Pump in the comments.

Contributor Stalking (The “Eataly’s Pricey Seafood Lunch” Edition)

Curious how the different ML contributors have been ringing in the New Year? Brownie had brunch at the Farm on Adderley, before heading out to Brighton Beach for a primer on Uygher Food, Chris H can’t stay away from Danji, and Ultraclay had a pricey seafood lunch at David Pasternack’s new Eataly restaurant.

Around the rest of the ML Universe… Andrea tried out the newly open FiDi branch of Hello Pasta, Jamie was all about the shawarma at Sahara Grill in Philly, and I followed up my healthy lunches list with a trip to an all you can Kerala buffet in L.A.

Checking Out the Sweet Croissants at Momofuku Milkbar

Inside Milk Bar Black Sesame Croissant

Blondie tipped us all off to the fact that Momofuku Milk Bar makes croissants. Very, very interesting croissants, like Pastrami and Rye. As one of their thousand-some twitter followers (@Momomilkbar), I also got the scoop that they’ve been making special croissants of the Fluffernutter variety. Alas, it’s the early bird that gets the Fluffernutter Croissant. When I swung by at lunch time they were sold out. Bah. The woman behind the counter recommended the Black Sesame Croissant with Cream Cheese and TriStar Strawberry Jam ($6), to me, so I decided to make the best of a lame situation and give it a try. If you have a sweet tooth (or you were geared up for the luscious sugar bomb promise of a Fluffernutter croissant) this might be a bit on the savory side for you on account of the black sesame.

It was no petite croissant, but then for $6, you’d hope to get a decent sized pastry. The pastry itself was a bit dense which is fine for a crosissantwich type situation like the Pastrami and Rye, but might be a bit much for a breakfast or snack. Still, the prospect of Fluffernutter in croissant form continues to intrigue. According to their twitter this morning they have them on the menu today. Anyone tried any of the other croissants here? Is Kimchi and Blue Cheese Croissant as cray cray as it sounds?

Don’t Get Too Excited for Taim Mobile’s Sabich: Ever since reading this post on Serious Eats we've been huge fans of the sabich, a Middle Eastern sandwich featuring hard boiled eggs and fried eggplant.  So imagine how pumped we were to read that Taim Mobile would start serving it this week.  Sadly, it's not true.  We checked in with the owners, and they said it was a misunderstanding.  Making the sandwich on the truck isn't feasible right now.
