Food Gallery 32

Went to Gallery 32 today, and I'm pretty excited about the future meals I intend to have there. The space is nice, with lots of seating on the 2nd and 3rd floors. While others have complained about the ordering system, I have no problem with it, and it seems well-organized. The thing that struck me most about Gallery 32 was the huge amount of choices. I was frozen in place reading menus for a long time. I'll describe the various stalls below:

  1. 1. Boon Sik Zip. ML mentioned the pork feet that's supposed to be here, but this is actually primarily a kim-bob place. It also features some sort of fried Korean cuisine that I'm unfamiliar with.

    2. Pastel. An earlier ML post called this "American Food Korean Style," but it's not. It's actually Japanese-style food (possibly made in a Korean-style), specifically chicken/pork cutlets (of the sort pictured on ML), omelets, spaghetti.

    3. (name I forgot). Basic Japanese food such as donburi, teppanyaki, onigiri.

    4. (name I forgot). This is the traditional Korean menu that mimics all those sit-down places on 32nd. They have your pajun, your bibimbop, your soon dubu, your Korean BBQ, etc.

    5. Bian Dang. Good old NYC Cravings (Taiwanese), now with higher prices!

    6. Jin Jja Roo. Korean-style Chinese food such as jjajangmyun.

    7. Big Bowl. Your home for all sorts of noodle soups--ramen, udon, soba. Of course, this is Korean-style ramen rather than Japanese-style.

And of course, in the future there will be a Red Mango right at the front, but also a creperie/bakery/cafe up on the 3rd Floor.

  2. Oh, forgot to mention what I had. It's hard to judge a place like this based on 1 or 2 or even 3 dishes, since you'd have to have 7 just to sample every stall. I happened to get kal-guksu from Big Bowl for $7 pretax. Came with some kimchi radishes and a small salad with purple(!) dressing. It didn't hold a candle to Arirang, but I was more than satisfied with my choice.

I had a chance to visit FG32 myself last Friday. I couldnt help myself from getting the Taiwanese fried chicken. Also got a seafood pancake from Hanok. Food overall was good.

But wanted to comment overall about the layout/execution of the place. I talked to the guys at Bian Dang and they admitted its slow. Not hard to believe because there really been much publicity, which is what they mentioned. Had it not been for ML, i wouldnt have known about the place. Went up to the 3rd fl to visit Crepe Monster, and they said pretty much the same thing. except its worse up there. there's no signage or ANYthing (at least from what i saw) on the first 2 floors to even indicate there was anything on the 3rd floor! the second floor had limited seating, there should be a sign saying that there are more seats up there. i feel really bad for Crepe Monster and the other Bakery stall up there. unless you read it on ML or some other food blog, you would NEVER know it was there. thats the only reason i decided to venture up there.

all in all, GREAT concept but very poor execution. i hope this place does well...as i'd like to go back. this place at the VERY least needs a web site.

  4. They've definitely suffered from weak marketing. The whole place does seem much slower than it should be. On the other hand, it seems to have gotten steadily busier over the weeks since it opened. The opening of Red Mango might help a bit (though it certainly won't help Crepe Monster).

I had the jjol myun (cold spicy noodles with vegetables) and kar gook soo (noodles with seafood based broth) from Big Bowl. I was pleasantly surprised with both. The only thing I was concerned about was walking up the stairs with my tray of soup. I was afraid of tripping.

Whhhhat? I sat on the 2nd floor and had NO idea that Crepe Monster was on 3rd.
