Wafels, Treats Truck & Cravings Bring the ‘This is Why You’re Fat Thunder!’

DSC05013

By the time you read this post, the guy in the photo above will have probably won the “This is Why You’re Fat Eat N Tweet Challenge”.  He bought lunch for the guy at the front of a very very long NYC Cravings Truck line (just so he could photograph himself with their special), and I saw him with a plate of the Treats Truck “dessert nachos” (yes, you read that right), before @TIWYF had even twittered the Treats Truck location.  (UPDATE: And it’s over.  And in case you are wondering, yes- that is Nick McGlynn.)

But just because this guy won first, doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy one or more of the specials for yourself.  I’m pretty sure all the trucks will continue to sell their special today, even after the contest has been won.  Check them out, in all their glory, after the jump.

Culture Espresso Bar is Perfect if You Don’t Feel Like Trekking to Sullivan Street Bakery

When Culture Espresso Bar opened on 38th and 6th back in July it was notable for coffee drinkers because they served Intelligentsia.  But it turns out it’s notable for us eaters as well.  Not only do they serve coffee and a small selection of pastries, but they also have sandwiches.  And while I’m normally not super into pre-made, fancy coffee shop sandwiches, these have a trump card that will always get me: they’re all made on bread from Sullivan St. Bakery.  Oh, and they happen to be pretty tasty too.

The First Fat Stop is in Midtown: And we're off.  The first stop on the TIWYF Eat N Tweet Challenge is the Wafels and Dinges on 45th & 6th. Wonder what they're serving... might have to head over. Also of note, the Bistro Truck let loose a photo of their special a bit early and it's quite a sight to behold.

Is the Trini Paki Cart Going Away?

If you can’t go too long without eating food from the Trini Paki Boys cart (the chicken over rice cart on 43rd btw. 5+6th) you might want to grab lunch there before the end of the week. They’re handing out fliers letting their customers know that the permit on their cart is up for renewal, and they might not be in their regular spot next week. Chicken over rice with pepper sauce and yogurt could be good, or you can try one of their daily specials. Naturally we’ll keep everyone updated on their situation next week. (Thanks to Lunch’er Steve for sending in a scan of the flier.)

Your Guide to This is Why You’re Fat’s Eat N Tweet Challenge

The week that gross food fanatics have been waiting for is finally here… “This is Why You’re Fat: The Book” is out, and to celebrate they’re having an Eat N Tweet Challenge today involving 6 NYC food trucks (and a lot of over the top lunch specials). The way the contest works is this: every 20 minutes, starting at 11am, @TIWYF will be twittering one by one the locations of each of the 6 trucks in the city selling a special item inspired by the book (i.e. disgustingly delicious). The first person to hit up each truck, and twitter photos of themselves @TIWYF with each of the six specials will win a private food cart party of your choice with 25 friends, and This is Why You’re Fat gift bags with free copies of the book! I know a lot of you have twitter blocked by your offices, so we’re adding @TIWYF to the Midtown Lunch Twitter Tracker for the day so you can follow along.

The best part is, even if you can’t make it to all six trucks you can still try any of the This is Why You’re Fat inspired menu items. And I’m pretty sure at least three of the six trucks will be in Midtown tomorrow. Find out which ones, plus more tips, after the jump.

Who Needs Coffee?

High Low Food Drink rounds up some of the best coffee in the city, and a few of the options are in Midtown.  They recommend Joe The Art of Coffee and Zibetto’s (plus Stumptown in the Ace Hotel is just outside the boundaries.)

Maybe This Will Help: From Twitter: "Sign on Tasti-D-Lite on 6th at 39th: 'Coming Soon The Soupman (yeah That Soupman) joins Tasti-D-Lite'". Uh... because those who like flavorless froyo love soup? Genius!

The Fancification of Street Meat

Despite the rain it looks like Dan Delaney and Fancy Fast Food managed to make it to the Famous Halal Guys cart on 53rd and 6th yesterday to fancify a plate of street meat for a future episode of VendrTV. Both camps were being all hush hush about exactly what they did (I suggested a charcuterie plate!), but this curious looking photo was posted online last night. A tagine isn’t a huge stretch from the original dish, but it’s still the fanciest plate of street meat I’ve ever seen! And it looks like they might have even cut up the rice to make it look like cous cous. Maybe there’s more to it than meets the eye. Guess we’ll just have to wait for the episode to see!

Bombay Eats’ Tandoori Chicken Pizza By the Slice is Not Bad

So I finally got a chance to swing by Bombay Eats yesterday, the Indian restaurant on 52nd btw. 8+9th that serves New York style pizza with toppings like chicken tikka and saag paneer.  The first time I visited, they weren’t selling the Indian pizza by the slice so I had to ask them to take a piece of cheese pizza and top it with saag paneer from their buffet (which is $10.95 all you can eat at lunchtime, but doesn’t include pizza.)  Of course after Midtown Lunch’ers descended on the restaurant in full force, they decided to finally offer the Indian pizza by the slice.

I stopped by yesterday to check it out.

Twitter Tracker: On the old ML Twitter Tracker this morning... Cupcake Stop is on 47th and 3rd with Yankees cupcakes (but you already knew that), Wafels and Dinges is on 52nd, Rickshaw is on 57th, and the VendrTV thing in Dumbo got canceled so Street Sweets is on 55th and 6th today.
