Cartwatch: What Happened to the Teriyaki Cart?

It seems as if the Teriyaki Cart, which I wrote about two weeks ago, has disappeared.  Multiple reports have come in saying that they haven’t been parked in their normal spot on 49th & 3rd.  Anybody see them there today?  Or in a different part of Midtown?  Post tips in the comments, or send them to zach@midtownlunch.com

Sandwiches Are a Trend!?!: "Maybe it’s the economy. Maybe it’s the weather. Whatever the reason, NYC is eating its way through a new golden age of the sandwich." That is soooo interesting! I had no idea.

Manchester Pub’s Sandwich Entry is Worth Going a Little Out of Bounds For

DSC01361

When I started up the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge I don’t remember if I mentioned anything about the boundaries of Midtown Lunch, which right now are 3rd Ave. on the East, 8th Ave. on the West, Central Park to the north, and 32nd St. to the south (got to include Koreatown, right?)  I started these boundaries because, while I feel there are some who will venture to 2nd Ave. or 9th Ave. or 28th St., the majority of lunchers confine themselves to this area.  And in the end, you have to the draw the line somewhere.  I will, occasionally, though break my own rules if there is something really out of the ordinary good.  Something you can’t get anywhere else in Midtown (i.e. Baoguette.)

I don’t know if Manchester Pub’s pork tenderloin sandwich fits that criteria, but they submitted it as an entry to the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge- and it sounded good enough to get me to trek over to 2nd Ave. to check it out.

Danku’s Indonesian Sloppy Joe

IMG00707

I thought I was probably never going to have to go back to Danku, the Dutch/Indonesian fast food place on 57th btw. 5+6th, until last week when I read about their latest creation: the Indonesian Sloppy Joe.  Oh boy.  Luckily Lunch’er Adam P. took the bullet for all of us, and sent in some photos and a report.

So I went to Danku to try out the Indonesian “Sloppy Joe”. The sandwich sells for $5, but you can get a combo with “Organic Fries” for $7.50, though I opted for the solo Joe and got 2 krokets on the side instead of fries. I was disappointed to find they dropped the Mac&Cheese krokets from the menu (no, really), so I had the Spinach&Artichoke krokets instead.

The sandwich is exactly what I expected from the description of an “Indonesian Sloppy Joe”, and unfortunately it was exactly what I expected in a sandwich from Danku.

Mark Your Calendars: The date has been set for the 2009 Vendy Awards, so go ahead and mark it down in your calendars: September 26th, 2 p.m. at Queens Museum of Art.  In ink of course... because if you are reading this site, I don't see how you can miss the premiere street food event of the year! Yushi Wants To Give You Free Conveyor Belt Sushi

You have to give Yushi (on 47th btw. Park+Lex) a bit of credit… although some of their stuff is a little overpriced, and healthy (read: flavorless) for my taste, I’m starting to like more and more of their offerings- and they are definitely trying. They are planning on opening their new conveyor belt to the public on Monday, but want to make sure they don’t suffer the same fate as Sakae Sushi (which was doomed by overpriced, mediocre food.)  They asked me to come try the new conveyor belt food, and give them feedback- but I don’t like taking free stuff from Midtown Lunch places. I will, however, take free food for my readers!  So I suggested they bring in some Midtown Lunchers for the free lunch “focus group”… and they agreed!

I know it’s late notice, but the free lunch is tomorrow (Thursday) at 12:30pm, and they’ve set aside 6 slots for Midtown Lunchers.  Available for lunch tomorrow?  Comment below why you should be chosen for the “focus group”, and you (and a guest) will be entered to win free conveyor belt lunch tomorrow at Yushi. (Make sure to include your email address so I can contact you.  It will not get published on the site.) The three winners will be contacted by 10 a.m. on Thursday morning. Please only enter if you will be available at 12:30pm tomorrow.

Five Guys Price Hike?: Few places have the balls to jack up their prices in this economy, and yet this email came in yesterday: "I just went to the Five Guys in Midtown earlier and I noticed they raised all of the prices on the menu (especially the fries) small went up 80 cents and the burgers look like they went up 30-40 cents.  That is the 2nd time they have raised them in the last year.  Burger and Fries now is $12 (including tax) up from $11 which is still crazy." Nice.

Carribean Spice Cart Returns

From the ML Inbox: “CS is back, at least it has been west of Biryani cart (on 46th btw. 6+7th) for the past few days, maybe more.” And just in time to take advantage of the Jamaican Dutchy being on vacation! I guess they got their permits sorted out… anybody eaten from the cart this week?

2 Lunches Midtown Needs from Austin, TX

DSC01385

I spent the past two days in Austin, TX and thanks to some great recommendations from Midtown Lunch’ers I had two lunches that I think Midtown desperately needs to incorporate into its repertoire: down home Texas BBQ and good Tex-Mex. Sure, we have the Daisy May’s cart… and I like the Daisy May’s cart. But for the price of a pulled pork sandwich at Daisy May’s, I had plate of BBQ that put anything you’ll get in NYC to shame. And I’m sure you can find Tex-Mex in NYC too, but nothing like the breakfast tacos I got in Austin.

Check both lunches out, after the jump…

Indian Food Newsstand Adds Pizza to the Lineup

DSC01356

More news from Khodiar Lunch Services (aka Newsstand Indian) on 6th Ave. btw. 37+38th.  They’ve introduced pizza to the “food court” which already includes vegetarian Gujarati food, regular Indian food with meat, a chaat counter, and the latin food that used to be in the Blimpie next door.  The chaat counter moved to the back awhile ago, along with everything else, and now the pizza is in the front right hand corner where the chaat used to be. They’re having a “Grand Opening” special, with slices for $1.50- so I felt compelled to see what pizza from an Indian newsstand would taste like (it doesn’t appear as if they have outsourced the pizza to an Italian family.)
