Simit + Smith Opens Second Downtown Location With Freebies For Government Workers

If you thought the Financial District didn’t have enough options for bread with holes in the middle, you’re in luck: A location of Simit + Smith opened today on William St. at Platt. They specialize in Turkish simit which are the thinner, lighter cousin of the bagel, and they also have at least one solid sandwich. Between this and Blue Spoon Coffee across the street, this block has some solid carb options. Also, according to their Twitter, if you have a government ID you can get a free simit through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Forsake Chipotle For Tauro’s Cheaper Steam Table Lunch

Working in Hudson Square can be hard if you don’t want to spend and arm and a leg on lunch. Options are mostly limited to chains like Pret a Manger, Dig Inn and Chipotle and I see too many people carting around bags from the latter.

I think a lot of people aren’t willing to walk a few blocks further down Hudson St. to Tauro Restaurant which seems to have at least prettied up its outside if not inside since I was last there. The best part? They have a steam table with several options and you can be in and out with your lunch in 5 minutes.  Read more »

Are You A Vegan Who’s Always Wanted To Taste A McRib? Terri Has A Sandwich For You

Sometimes a lunch that I warily buy takes a turn for the delicious. That was the case when I randomly stopped by Terri on Pearl St. (btw. Maiden Ln and Cedar) and happened to see they had a new sandwich on the menu. They now offer a vegan version of a BBQ pork sandwich ($8.05) and after a taste I was immediately reminded of an offering at a certain fast-food chain.  Read more »

Just In Time For Oktoberfest, Schnitzel & Things Cart Frequents Tribeca

There is no shortage of carts on the two-block stretch of Greenwich St. between Chambers and Barclay streets in lower Tribeca. The problem is they are almost all halal carts with the occasional appearance of a food truck or two. Lately Schnitzel & Things has been frequenting a spot on Greenwich near Park Place and it seems both office and construction workers like the option of fried cutlets in sandwich or platter form. I do too.  Read more »

Free Chocolate at La Maison This Week: The addition of a new box of sweets at La Maison du Chocolat means freebies for all on Thursday. The shop on Wall St. (btw. William & Pearl) will be giving out tastes of a new pairing of chocolates featuring ganache and orange peel from noon to 6 p.m. You know what to do.

The FiDi’s Gaining A Smashburger After Five Guys Loss

I know we haven’t reported on the closure of Five Guys, but most of you have probably realized it closed along with all of the other ground-floor businesses in that building on Fulton St. due to a condo development. The good news is that soon we’ll be getting a Smashburger on William St. (nr. Fulton) in the space that housed Yips. There’s one other NYC location of the Colorado-based chain in downtown Brooklyn and in addition to smashed burgers they also have chicken sandwiches, salads and shakes. It looks like there will also be one burger concoction unique to the Financial District location.
