Midtown Lunch

The last few weeks has not been kind to the Schnitzel & Things Truck. They had a fire back in November, and were M.I.A. almost of all of last week with “truck problems”. They were ready to go today, but found their tires slashed this morning. They are trying to find out who did it, but either way Midtown will be schnitzel-less until at least on Thursday- although seeing as it’s Christmas Eve they haven’t decided if they’re going to work. Don’t want to take a chance? This just in from Lunch’er “Rich”: “The Schnitzel Truck is on fire. No idea what happened, but there’s smoke pouring out the back and the guy is giving people their money back, and on the phone with someone, maybe the Fire Dept?” And now Lunch’er “Chris” has checked in to say fire trucks have arrived, and lunch has been cancelled for the day.  Hopefully everybody is ok…

UDPATE from @Schnitzeltruck: “Had little mishap.. Everyone on the truck is fine. Sorry to customers that had to leave. We’ll be back on road stronger than ever very soon!”

Is the Schnitzel & Things Truck the next Michael’s?  According to their twitter account, not only did Comedian Jeff Garlin (from Curb Your Enthusiasm) stop by the Schnitzel & Things Truck for a little photo op, but apparently Bobby Flay also walked by earlier today and was shouted at challenged to a throwdown by the guys in the truck. I guess this is what happens when you win a Vendy Award, and appear in a T-Mobile Commercial.

I guess the Schnitzel & Things truck was inspired by last week’s This is Why You’re Fat Eat N Tweet Challenge, because on Friday they decided to wrap a bratwurst in pork schnitzel- you know, for schnitz and giggles*. They haven’t decided if they will add this… thing to the menu, which has yet to be named (I’m pushing for “porn dog”), but I think it would be a delightful sister item to the already grotesquely beautiful schnitzel burger.  In the meantime they’re hard at work in the “schnitzel lab” trying to perfect some new options that will be unveiled next week as part of a completely revamped menu.

Nothing like a T-Mobile ad during the World Series (or the Office, or Top Chef) to raise your profile. The Schnitzel Truck is everywhere thanks to a brand new TV ad that seems to be everywhere.  The truck is only on for a few seconds, and I’m not exactly sure what a priest who text messages has to do with schnitzel, but whatever.  It’s still kind of cool. (Oh, and a quick reminder– they’re on 26th and Park today instead of Dumbo because of the Vendr.TV switcheroo.)

A couple of exciting tidbits from the world of Midtown street vending this morning.  First up, I just got word that Kwik Meal’s Muhammed Rahman will open his new pasta cart today.  It will be parked next to the OG Kwik Meal cart on 45th and 6th and will have three options: Angel hair w/ chicken, shrimp, or vegetables in red sauce.  Can’t wait to hear from the early adopters about this one.  Feel free to send photos to zach@midtownlunch.com.  Also going down today… Schnitzel & Things and the Street Sweets truck are parking together today on 52nd btw. 6+7th. Schnitzel burger, followed by fresh oven baked chocolate chip cookies?  Sounds like a plan… (although, as always, you may want to check the ML Twitter Tracker for confirmation before heading out.)

I finally got to try the Schnitzel Burger from the Schnitzel & Things Truck today.  It required me getting there at 11:40am (the line was already 11 people long, 30+ by the time a left at 12:05), but was completely worth it.  And after taking one bite… the music started loud and clear in my head:
