Food Carts See Increase in Business: This radio interview Brian Lehrer did with three of the Vendy Award nominees was taped before the event this past weekend, but it's still interesting to listen to.  Especially the part about where the Calexico Cart and Kwik Meal (on 45th & 6th) both say they've seen an increase in business since the economic collapse. Ivanka Trump Handing Out Free Lunch Today

I hate supporting crap like this, but as a service to all of you dudes who I know will be into it- I feel obligated.  (And you know who you are.) According to this press release, Ivanka Trump will be outside of the Grace Building in Midtown today (on 42nd Street & 6th Ave) handing out free <product whose name is not worth mentioning because it goes against everything this site stands for>.  Unfortunately, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the press release, because I found it randomly… in other words, stalk at your own risk.

Dessert Truck To Throwdown With Bobby Flay?

The Dessert Truck will not be at its normal spot in Midtown (52nd and Park Ave.) today, Monday or Tuesday.  Today, there’s filming in the area- but on Monday and Tuesday they’ll be filming a “demo” for the food network.  From their newsletter:

“Monday – we will be closed for day service at 52nd/Park but will be open at St Marks Place from 12-1:30 to shoot for Food Network. No changes to night hours. If you’re in the area, do stop by. For the Food Network demo on Tuesday, all are invited to attend. Here’s the blurb they asked us to post:

FOOD NETWORK LOOKING FOR AN AUDIENCE – FREE BREAD PUDDING!!!

Rachel Ray Bringing Burgers to Midtown

From the NY Post: “Ray… the self-described ‘burger freak’ plans to open a hamburger joint in Midtown next year. ‘I’m going for a ’60s back-in-the-day Rat Pack-y kind of hangout, and I want the bar to be really central [and] the burgers to become a very social thing,’ says Ray. ‘I want people to come to the bar to see beautiful proper martinis being made and to enjoy some sliders while they’re doing business or sit in the dining room and have fine dining in ground form.'” Chance that a Rachel Ray burger joint in Times Square will be annointed a proper ‘Midtown Lunch’? Zilch. [via Eater]

At Lunch Now: Celebrity Apprentice Cupcake Truck

CIMG2255

If Magnolia Bakery is wondering how to get more dudes into cupcakes, I think this may be the solution.  7th Ave and 46th St. is the place to be for fans C-List Celebs and cupcakes (until 2pm.) What more could you want? As we reported earlier, it’s some kind of Celebrity Apprentice thing– which is kind of funny if you think about it. Aren’t real entrepreneurs supposed to come up with the next big thing?

Celebrity Apprentices Selling Cupcakes in Midtown Today

Just when you thought the whole Midtown cupcake thing couldn’t get any crazier, I got this note from a friend today: “Yo, my girl T Boz (from TLC) will be in NYC today 10/7 doing a surprise cupcake sale near Radio City/Rockefeller Center from 12:30 to 2pm. She is doing it to raise money for her chosen charity (sickle cell anemia) for a top secret tv thing (you didn’t hear it from me but the show may or may not rhyme with schmelebrity shmaprentice.)” I wonder if it will be at the new Magnolia Bakery location on 49th & 6th (which did not open yesterday as planned.)

Update from the Comments (10:40am): “Celebrity Apprentice/Playboy playmate Brande Broderick is selling cupcakes at 5th ave btw. 56+57 street… and PlayboyU will hand out free tee shirts.” And from Cupcakes Take the Cake: Khloe Kardashian will be on 57th & 5th from 10:30am to Noon. And then in Rock Center from 12:30 to to 2pm.  It looks like they are all going to be selling from the same location. 57 & 5th until Noon, and Rock Center 46th St. & 7th Ave. after that. Send photos to zach@midtownlunch.com (please)

Twitter Anybody?

I finally gave in and signed Midtown Lunch up for one of them Twitter accounts.  Not sure exactly what I’m gonna use it for yet (free food alerts maybe?), but if you want to be the first to know when I decide, feel free to sign up. If that kind of thing interests you, you can also sign up to follow The Treats Truck, The Rickshaw Dumpling Truck, and the Waffles and Dinges Truck.

Are You Lunching Less in This Failing Economy?

Are Midtown Lunch’ers Taking a Bath?

According to this AMNY article some are “packing leftovers for lunch instead of hitting the Midtown sandwich shops.”  I know alot of Lehman employees were also Midtown Lunchers, and I’m sure expense account places are hurting.  On the other hand, the lines at street carts don’t seem to be letting up. Are you bringing your lunch more often now?  Or just opting for cheaper places?

$7 Fancy Bibimbap Alert

This week is Korean Restaurant Week, which means a number of nice Korean restaurants in Midtown are offering bibimbap for just $7.  (Or if you feel like splurging, a complete lunch for $15.)  For a list of participating restaurants go to the official website. [via Serious Eats: New York]

According to Lunch’er Jill a street vendor on 50th and 6th Ave. in front of the Time Life Building caught on fire just after 5 p.m.  yesterday (not the cart, but the actual vendor himself):

[It] happened at the exact time I was leaving work on 50th and 6th Ave.  right outside the Time Life building.  I didn’t see anything but a big crowd. As I was walking through the lobby some lady ran into our building and told a security guard something was on fire.  Once I got outside, I asked someone what was up and he said someone was on fire.

The NY Post reported this morning that nearby office workers came to the rescue…
