Midtown Lunch

At Midtown Lunch we’re not supposed to like things like 7-Eleven (unless they’re turned into Kwik E Mart’s of course.) For the most part, it’s really just a shinier corner bodega that happens to be a worldwide chain. Their pre-wrapped sandwiches evoke the same reactions as Walgreen sandwiches… but the one redeeming quality of 7-Eleven is their slurpees. Nothing like fluorescent icy drinks to alter my perception of good and evil. Also, there is nothing like free slurpees!

The new 7-Eleven on 8th ave and 37th street has been open for a couple of weeks now, but they’re doing a Grand Opening celebration today. According to a poster hanging in their front window there will be 300 free ‘gift bags’ and there will be free slurpees. The last time the 7-Eleven on 42nd did free slurpees, they only did 2oz cups so your mileage may vary on this. Still, there’s free samples of 7-Eleven food and you could win a free iPad. At this point, 7-Elevens are still a novelty for NYC, and freebies are always good. It goes down today from 5pm to 7pm, so slurpee loving freeloaders- engage!

And the first item to be schnitzified by the Schnitzel & Things Truck is… proscuitto and ricotta! (They amended the tweet to note that there isn’t actually rice in the fried balls.) They’re parked on 48th and 6th… and we’re guessing these are going to go fast. Godspeed freeloaders. Godspeed.

Word is that yesterday afternoon, Nanoosh– the new Mediterranean counter on Madison btw 33+34th- was giving away free lunches to hype up its big opening day tomorrow (Weds).  We’re hearing word from a fairly reputable source that they’ll be back at it this afternoon from noon to 3pm. Not sure exactly what they’re giving away (samples?  complete lunch?) but I got there around 2:30pm yesterday and it was all over, so for hardcore freeloaders we suggest going early.

Not interested in waiting on line for the possibility of free food? If you don’t mind spending a couple bucks, so long as it goes to a good cause, Nanoosh will also be open from 5:30 to 8:30pm tonight serving a main, a side and a (non-alcoholic) drink for $10 to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

In celebration of Mothers Day this Sunday (you got your mom a present, right!) the Street Sweets Truck will be giving away 1,000 cupcakes on Friday specifically to Moms. After starting their day in Mommy-central Park Slope (7th and Carroll from 9-11am), they plan on hitting Midtown from Noon to 3pm, parking on 50th Street and 6th Avenue (before finishing up on 7th & B’way from 3:30 to 6:30pm.) No word on whether you actually need a child present in order to get your cupcake on- but we all know I will totally borrow a child for some free cupcakes. Freeloading moms engage!

Thanks to Lunch’er Mike for passing along this great news… the latest branch of the Italian gelato shop Grom (on Broadway btw. 58+59th) will be opening tomorrow (5/7) at Noon. And gelato super fans know what that means… FREE GELATO!!! If you’ve never had Grom before, it’s pretty much the best (but most expensive) gelato of all time… so free makes this the best ice cream/gelato deal of the century (we recommend the pistachio.) From Noon to 9pm. Freeloaders engage.
