Seized Again: The Old Bridge Deli Ain’t What She Used To Be

Old Bridge Deli Seized 1
Old Bridge Deli Seized 3From a Lunch’er: “The Old Bridge Deli (on 41st & Lex) got SEIZED (big orange stickers out front, doors closed)…. AGAIN.  That’s twice in like a few months. Same exact thing that happened before basically.  Lights on, people literally walking up to the door and yanking on it, only to then lookup and see the big orange sticker with massive “SEIZED” on it.  Didn’t bother reading the fine print on the sticker this time though.” She bounced back once, let’s see if she can do it again.

Thanks to Lunch’er Howard for the photos.

Belly Deli Goes Belly Up: This just came in to the ML inbox: "Just went by my go-to sandwich place, Belly Delly Deli on Broadway bet. 49+50th and see that it has been seized by the NYS Tax Dept for unpaid taxes."  Poor Superman.  That totally generic Midtown deli was one of his favorites.

When Midtown Lunch’ers “Decide”, Bad Places Close

goodportions1
freshportions2In February, I asked you guys weigh to in on Good Portions, a Pan-Asian fast food place on Lexington btw. 39+40th that I desperately wanted to like.  The one or two dishes I tried there, were not the best- but I thought that somebody must have had one good thing to eat from their extensive menu.  Apparently I was wrong.  Based on the comments, you people didn’t like Good Portions all that much, and based on the sign I saw in the window when I walked by the place today, it appears as if they have closed.  I’ll admit “Sorry we are close… for business” is not as definitive as it could be (does that mean today or for good?), but I’m guessing they’re not re-opening.

Piece of Chicken Gets the DOH; East Ocean is Gone

DSC09226

One of my favorite Out of Bounds lunches, Piece of Chicken (on 45th btw. 8+9th) was closed by the DOH yesterday for an “expired operating permit.”  This place opened last year in the kitchen of Caribbean restaurant Jezebel, selling $1 pieces of fried chicken out the back door.  Jezebel closed, and a wall was built, effectively turning P.O.C into its own little take out place.  Jezebel is now Five Napkin Burger, and Piece of Chicken is one of the best places to get cheap and quick soul food in Midtown West.  They will re-open in the middle of next week, and urge people to call and confirm.  212-582-5973.

Plus I walked by East Ocean, a little steam table Chinese place on 55th btw. Lex+3rd which has closed.  Someobody commented about this in the beginning of June, but I think subconciously I ignored it (hoping it wasn’t true.)  That upper corner of Midtown East really is a dead zone.

Fresh Bites Closes Down- Only 2849 More Generic Midtown Delis to Go.

DSC09191

Fresh Bites (on 6th Ave. btw. 56+57th) was my friend Dan’s favorite Midtown Lunch… and now it’s gone.  I guess people don’t want “fresh tastes at great prices.”  I ate there once (on his recommendation) and had a good lunch but nothing special.  It did have its fans though, and I’m sure it will be missed.  Oh wait… no it won’t.  There are a million other places like it still open in Midtown. Nevermind.

Bits & Pieces (The “How to Cover up the DOH Sticker” Edition)

I hadn’t seen this one before… the recently shuttered Hing Won on 48th btw. 5+6th pulled their gate down just far enough to “coincidentally” obscure the bright yellow DOH sticker (you can see the top sticking out a little bit).  This guy wasn’t fooled though!  You can’t see it in this photo, but the hordes of confused slack jawed yokels hovering around, asking “are they closed?” to no one in particular totally reminded me of the scene on the very same street almost 2 years ago when Variety Cafe was DOH’d.  That post spawned the creation of the “Closed by the DOH” category, and these clairvoyant words:

“EDITOR NOTE: We have created a new “Closed for Health Reasons” Category, which given our content, and location will probably have to be used more often then any of us would like. Hing Won, you’ve been warned.”

Still no word on exaclty why they were DOH’d, but it’s not hard to imagine.  They were in the process of “cleaning” up the place, and said if the re-inspection in the morning goes well, they’ll be back open tomorrow.

Also closed (but not by the Department of Health, and seemingly for good) is Le Croissant Shop on 6th Ave. btw. 38+39th.  Popular for their croissants (naturally) and Mexican food (huh?), they will certainly be missed on Cinco de Mayo (and Bastille Day?).

It’s not all bad news though… Read more »

Rong Bao Shuttered, DOH Helps Milant

Walked by a couple of shuttered establishments yesterday…

Super cheap Chinese steam table, Rong Bao Fast Food, on 38th btw. 7+8th, was mysteriously closed yesterday.  Not sure if this is permanent, but if it is, it’s no big surprise.  Given the choice between Rong Bao, and the newly renovated Ying Du directly across the street (formerly the 38th St. Restaurant and Bakery), I’d always go to Y.D.

SUGO MAKES ITS LAST ITALIAN BURRITO

Botanico Wrap Innards @ Sugo! e Basilico, Midtown NYCIn the ML comments comes the news that Sugo e Basilico “on 5th closed down.” Opened in the summer of last year, on 5th Ave btw. 44+45th, I actually enjoyed Sugo’s strange brand of “Italian burrito” (my term, not theirs), but just like Momofuku Ssam Bar’s original “Korean Burrito” concept in the East Village (which I also *loved*, and begged them to bring to Midtown), too few people seem to like them enough to make a business.  Is there a lesson in this?  I guess people just don’t want multi cultural versions of Chipotle.  Bummer.

More Salad, Less Ice Cream on the East Side, While Pinkberry Surfaces on the West Side

This awesomeness popped up on the corner of 3rd Ave. & 43rd St.  What exactly is Crisp you ask?  No info on their website, but we get two clues:  “Fast fresh food that syncs your taste with your conscience.”  And, “It’s not what you think.  It’s better.”  Hmm… that’s interesting.  So it’s not an organic version of a generic salad bar/Midtown deli?  It’s better.  Can’t wait…

Just around the corner, on 43rd btw. Lex+3rd, the first Manhattan location of Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe has opened up, a chain with most of its locations in California, Oklahoma, Texas & Florida.  With a menu of fancy wraps, salads, pizzas and panini, I was slightly intrigued by their Bangkok Thai Wrap, until I saw that they add water chesnuts (meh), and provolone (huh?).  Oh well.

R.I.P. Old Bridge Deli

I’ve gotten it from numerous sources that the Old Bridge Deli on Lexington & 41st has been seized by the IRS for non-payment of taxes.  Mentioned by many of our Profiled Midtown Lunch’ers as their go-to lunch, the deli was loved by few, but used by many.  She will be missed…

(Anybody have a photo of the sadness?  Email it to me at zach@midtownlunch.com or post it to the Midtown Lunch Flickr Photo Group)
