Flatiron Lunch: Final Week of Mad. Sq. Eats

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

I might have been too hard of Mad. Sq. Eats recently. It is all about knowing where to go and where not to go. And paying a little extra for the atmosphere. With only one week left, I wanted to revisit Mad. Sq. Eats. There are still booths to try and a some reliable go-tos that never let me down.

Roti Lets You Build Your Own Mediterranean Meals

Last Friday, the Midtown location of Roti Mediterranean Grill (43rd btw 3rd+Lex) finally opened. So, how does Roti’s build-your-own concept stand up? Pretty well, as it turns out.

El Nosh Offering Jew-ban Sliders, Yucca Latkes, and More Today Only: Fusion frenzy isn't an original Xbox launch title anymore - someone has decided that it'd be awesome to make a Jewish/pan-Latin fusion restaurant and take over the Miami Food Machine truck to promote it. As much as I'd love some carne asada helzl, they're doing some interesting dishes. Kosher keepers beware, if they're offering "Jew-ban Sliders" - which look really tasty - they're still mixing meat and milk, so I would be wary about pork in stuff. For the rest of us, though, this looks interesting at the least. Keep an eye out on Miami Food Machine's Twitter for locations. Today only, so be swift about it!

Lezzette is Gone for Good

Midtown Southwest is down one of the better Turkish joints. After having been DoHed recently and inexplicably shuttering, the above photo and its realtor sign shows that it’s all over for Lezzette. No more midday baklava before hitting up B&H for us, it seems. We’re down to Troy Turkish Grill for ’round-the-corner doner options that are actually worth eating.

Shanghai Sogo Has Been Making Its Rounds in Midtown

The new food truck, Shanghai Sogo, just hit the streets this past week, serving up “Asian Tapas” consisting of dumplings, spring rolls, fried taro cakes, Zong Zi (sticky rice), sesame sandwiches, salads, and noodle dishes. Has anyone had a chance to try Shanghai Sogo yet? Take a closer look at the menu after the jump…

Wafels & Dinges Chicken and Waffles Is Not What You’d Expect

IMG_9917

Our prayers have been answered. Sort of. When news first broke last week that Wafels & Dinges would finally be offering chicken and waffles, I think a lot of people assumed that it was only at their brick and mortar.  I also assumed it would be a play on fried chicken and waffles, that classic non-Belgian waffle dish. The good news is they’re offering the dish everywhere but the carts. But the dish itself is nothing like you’d expect.

Lunch’er Steve Reports: Mangia Now Open on Madison

Yesterday Lunch’er Steve sent over this report about the new location of Mangia that replaced Red Stone Pizzeria cafe on Madison btw. 48+49th…

Just wanted to let you know that I happened to stumble into Mangia’s new location on Madison (used to be around the corner on 48th). I talked to some workers and they said it just “soft-opened” today, they have been keeping quiet so far. Looks pretty nice. Two floors, salad bar, pizza oven, sandwich, pastry, and fresh juice bar. La Colombe coffee. Swankier than the old one. There is a wine bar upstairs and lots of seating. Best part is free wifi and lots of charging plug stations at all the tables near the window! Am emailing you from here right now with both my laptop and phone plugged in. :)
Just had a margarita pizza, yum. Getting pretty busy here as we speak. Anyway, just thought you’d like to know.
More photos, including an aerial view of the salad bar (ooooooh!) are after the jump…

OBAO Is Open On 9th Ave With $8 Lunch Specials

Considering the number of times I’ve been to Schmackary’s lately, I’m not sure how I missed that OBAO opened a third location this summer on 45th and 9th. The new spot is offering $8 set lunches, a deal I hadn’t noticed at their other locations. Given the number of 9th avenue Thai restaurants, many of which are a within a couple of blocks, the deal makes sense in order to be competitive in the area. OBAO’s three locations each offer different specials at lunchtime, and at their other Midtown spot on the east side, OBAO will give you a free starter with the purchase of an entree. Since a main dish at lunchtime can run you north of the traditional ML budget, $8 seems like a pretty good deal.
