Flatiron Lunch: Openings and Closings

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

It’s been a while since we looked at openings and closings in the Flatiron area (read: I have been slacking.) So it is time for a proper round-up.

OPENINGS:

(NSFW?) Museum of Sex opened a restaurant. You heard me correctly. I’m really not sure I would feel comfortable eating at a place with exhibitions titled Universe of Desire, The Sex Lives of Animals, and My Life Ruined by Sex: The Works of William Kent. I haven’t seen a menu yet, but per a previous statement, “It’s going to be eclectic and artful.” M-kay.

Toast Monster Updates Menu Again, Adds Tacos and Quesadillas

When Toast Monster first appeared in midtown in late 2012, the menu was limited to about three sandwiches and a handful of French toast options. Since then, prices have changed and new items have been added. So much so, that it seems to me like Toast Monster is still trying to decide exactly what kind of cart it wants to be. Last I visited, the menu looked like this…

El Jalapeno Gives Tacos Juquilita a Run for Its Money

We got a tip recently from Luncher Stephen, who told us that folks at his office were split between two taco spots near the Mexican consulate on 39th St. (btw Park+Madison): the Tacos Juquilita truck and the El Jalapeno cart. We’ve covered the Juquilita truck before, and they make some pretty good tacos, so how does El Jalapeno stack up?

Oceana’s Lobster Roll Cart is Back: For those of you who though Oceana's lobster roll was worth the splurge, you'll be excited to know that their cart is back open from now through Labor Day.  If you were a fan of their smooshed cookies, that Blondie was so fond of a few years back, those have been replaced by a chocolate whoopie pie with popcorn buttercream. Sadly prices have gone up too.  The cookie is now $2 and the lobster roll is $18.

Kobeyaki’s Midtown Location Is Open

Kobeyaki is now open on 40th street, just west of Bryant Park. Sarah wrote up their Flatiron location last summer, highlighting the Kobe burger, veggie bowl and some great sweet potato fries. The Midtown menu is the same, which bodes well. Has anyone been yet to check it out? Let us know in the comments!

Vendy Awards to Honor 50 Heroic Food Vendors: This year, instead of honoring just one vendor who reported safety concerns on the street or stood up to bullying neighbors, the Vendy Awards will be honoring a group of 50 food trucks for their heroic acts last year. The NY Daily News reports that this year's heroic vendor award will go to members of the NYC Food Truck Association who donated food to the victims of Hurricane Sandy in the power outage days following the storm. A well deserved honor.  See you all at the event next month!

La Perla Mexicana Truck Has Been Parking in Midtown

La Perla Mexicana Food Truck, typically downtown in the Meatpacking District at 14th Street and 9th Avenue, has been parking on Park Avenue between 52nd and 53rd lately, with employees of the truck stating that they’ll be in the same spot for lunch everyday. A quick look at the menu after the jump shows a 3-taco special for $8, tortas for $6, and quesadillas for $5.

TITT is Gone at Certe, Montauk Hangover Starts Tomorrow

If you were hoping for a taste of Certe’s “TITT” (the Throw in the Towel lamb burger with tzatziki sandwich) you’re SOL.  It will be replaced by the Montauk Hangover starting tomorrow.  For those of you who don’t remember this one from August 2011, you’ll want to make sure to grab a fork and a knife on your way out.

La Montanita is On the Way Out?

We’ve had word from some of our faithful readers that La Montanita, the coffee cart on 40th & 8th which has fast become the go-to standard for one of the best, cheapest Mexican lunches in Midtown, is getting harder and harder to find. Word from the cart has been tough to nail down: one day they’re on vacation, one day they’re doing lunch no more as the owners are working on opening their own restaurant in Queens. With Rinconcito Mexicano closed and this drawdown of La Montanita ops, it’s looking like Ranchito del Agave is the last decent Mex in this part of town.
