NY Mag Likes The Flatiron: This week, New York Magazine released its Best of New York issue and as usual, Midtown didn't get a lot of love (Don Antonio was lauded for its deep-fried montanara but that's it) but the Flatiron got some warm fuzzies. The Cannibal is said to have New York's best hot dog(!) and Eataly's rooftop beergarden La Birreria was touted as being among the best microbreweries in town. Out of price range Indian spot, Junoon also got the nod for best goat.

Gyu-Kaku Times Square Is Open, But Not For Lunch

So, this annoying. Gyu-Kaku Times Square opened this week on 44th street between 8th and 9th avenues, but they aren’t open for lunch. They have plans to start serving lunch in the next month or two, but so far, their hours begin at 3 p.m. daily for dinner. We’ll keep checking back for when lunch comes into play.

At Lunch Now: Kati Roll on 53rd Is Open for Business

Huzzah! After a 1-day delay, the new location of Kati Roll is officially open on E. 53rd Street. When I first got there, there were a few people waiting for food but there was barely a line to order. I got my food in about 20 minutes, but currently there is a line out the door, so expect at least a 25-30 minute wait from when you get there until you receive your food. Early adopters, feel free to post updates in the comments…

Another Egg Dish From Hop Won Worth Trying

Hop Won As much as I love Hop Won’s chicken and broccoli from the steamed table, I’ve been exploring their menu. Their wonton noodles weren’t as good as I had hoped, but I was determined to find more hidden delicious gems. My previous visit I ordered the omelette with shrimp over rice, an item on one of their handwritten menu that was taped to a wall, and I was glad I did. Who doesn’t love a good fried egg omelette with snappy shrimp and vegetables over a bed of steaming rice? With that dish still fresh in my mind, I walked into Hop Won recently and ordered a similar dish. This dish was an off-the-menu item and even I wasn’t sure if they would make it.

Congrats to Go Go Curry On Their 2nd Location: We'd like to extend a happy omedetou gozaimasu! (that's congratulations, for those of you who don't speak Japanese) to Midtown Lunch institution Go Go Curry. They will be opening a second location at 231 Thompson (btw. West 3rd & Bleecker) on March 15. It's nowhere near Midtown, but we're still thrilled for them- and there is one perk for MLers. To celebrate the new store, the original location (on 38th btw. 7+8th) will give away 5 topping coupons on March 15th as well.

Shilla Has New Lunch Specials

Shilla 7.95 lunch special

Last week I found myself in K-Town after work where I noticed some interested signage outside Shilla. Looks like they are running several specials right now. One for regular lunchers, one for students, and a morning special for people who can read Korean. More signage pics after the jump. Read more »

Num Pang’s Batali Pang Gets Us Excited For the Next Celebrity Sandwich

_MG_3211

As posted last month (and printed here in the store), Cambodian Sandwich shop Num Pang started serving the Batali Pang last month, a special sandwich designed by Molto Mario himself. Served only until March 15th, the proceeds from the sandwich sales go to a Cambodian children’s charity and the Food Bank. With less than ten days left before the sandwich is gone forever, I stopped in to check it out.

Contributor Stalking (The “Steak & Macarons” Edition)

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (We’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Donny posted all the dishes he’s tried at Nate Smith’s Allswell so far, Blondie received smuggled macrons from Paris, Brownie tried cupcakes in Colombia, Rachel had oyakadon at Sapporo, Brian sampled the fresh mozzarella at Eataly, and I photographed in the kitchen at Stonehome Wine Bar in Fort Greene.

Elsewhere in the ML universe… Andrea discovered Turkish breakfast from a coffee cart downtown, Jamie succeeded in her mission to find Olive Oil Gelato in Philly, and Zach stuffed his fat face with AYCE Korean BBQ in Los Angeles.

Choice Streets Tickets On Sale Starting Today

Choice Eats, the Village Voice’s annual tasting event which takes place next week, is unfortunately sold out. The good news is that tickets just went on sale for Choice Streets. This is an extension of the main event (although it’s one month later) and is a tasting from over 20 food trucks, including Midtown favorites like Korilla BBQ and Wafels & Dinges in addition to ones that don’t often come to this neck of the woods, like Kelvin Natural Slush and Souvlaki GR. The event takes place on Tuesday, April 24 from 7-10pm on Pier 86. Tickets are $30 for general admission and include all the food, beverages, and entertainment. You can purchase them here.
