City Offering a “Taste of the Parks” Today: Despite the latest crackdown it's not all City vs. Street Vendors these days... the parks department has awarded a bunch of public spots around the city to various carts and trucks, and to celebrate they're having an event today from 11am to 2pm on 64th and 5th in Central Park. There will be 17 different vendors selling food, plus giving out some free samples (including The Country Boys from the Red Hook Ballfields, The Dosa Cart, Kelvin Slush, Sigmund Pretzels, Eddie's Pizza Cart, Wafels & Dinges and more.)

Food Truck Issues Migrate South to the 30s

In the last few weeks, our beloved food trucks have suffered through lots of ticketing and harassment in Midtown. We previously reported that many of the streets in the 50’s on the west side of Midtown are potentially off limits and Downtown trucks have had their problems too. It seems that this week the trouble has begun to move further down Midtown. The ML favorite Comme Ci, Comme Ca tweeted that they had been forced to move from their usual spot on 38th Street and Broadway on Friday. When I went by yesterday around 1:00, they had not been bothered yet, but the guys were anticipating more drama. And if problems arose, they have another nearby spot in mind as back-up that should be more legit since the street is not metered parking.

But wait, there’s more…

Pret Introduces a Summer Light Menu

Pret Summer Light Menu
Of the chains that populate midtown, I admit that I have a soft spot for Pret (what can I say, I love their chocolate croissant). The other day as I was walking around Rock Center I noticed that they’ve added a “Summer Light” menu with new sandwiches and salads and returning soups like gazpacho and Pea and Mint soup. But I was most intrigued by their buffalo chicken hot wrap ($6.49) which was comprised of Murrary’s grilled chicken, marinara sauce, sweet chili dressing, romaine, blue cheese, and “Pret seasoning” in a tortilla wrap. Marinara, chili dressing and blue cheese? What? It would either be an abomination or kind of awesome, I couldn’t resist. Read more »

Sunrise Mart Makes a Pretty Good Sandwich

IMG_2357

I’ll admit, that when I first heard that Sunrise Mart was coming to Midtown, I was excited more for the grocery options than for the lunch items. I’d always loved the selection of hard to find Japanese ingredients at the East Village location and was psyched to have them so close to the office. Jeremiah’s opening report and later Donny’s review of the Oyakodon got my attention, so when I stopped in a couple weeks ago to do a little shopping, I was sure to scope out the rest of the menu.

With all the great Japanese food on the menu, what surprised me was how many interesting sandwiches were available. I decided to take a closer look and sample a few of them. Check them out after the jump.

Do You Think The Counter Burger is Serious Eats?

Photo couresty of J. Kenji Lopez-Alt

If you thought our assessment of The Counter in Times Square was a bit lukewarm, it’s nothing compared to J. Kenji Alt’s evisceration of the popular chain on A Hamburger Today. From a burger purist standpoint, it’s tough to disagree with much of what he says- but it doesn’t change the fact that if you like putting a bunch of shit on your burger, you could possibly find something to like about The Counter. He also admits that he thinks the concept itself is “stupid”, so what chance did it really have. What do you think? Is The Counter a “stupid” “TGI Friday’s-like” waste that only a tourist could like, or is there something that Serious Eats is missing? Feel free to sound off in the comments…
