Tomorrow is Earth Day, which also happens to be Pizza by Cer Te’s one year anniversary.  So to celebrate their first year in business the first 200 customers of the day starting at 11:30am will score a free packet of basil seeds, a free pot (not that kind of pot you stoner), and a coupon for a free slice to be used on your next visit.

Korilla BBQ Truck Number Two Coming Soon: Just got word that Korilla BBQ has plans to roll out a second truck in the next week or two. This means they will be able to expand their locations and hopefully park in Midtown more than just on Mondays and Thursdays. I wonder if this could also mean an expanded menu and shorter lines? We shall soon see!

Your First Look at Melt’s Fried Chx Grilled Cheese

Melt Shop, Grilled Cheese

The Citigroup area of Midtown is full of subterranean food finds, but most of them are inside. Not so with the newest spot, Melt Shop (on Lex btw 53+54th). It’s nestled in the corner of the outside public plaza by the subway entrance, a place easy to miss by those walking around upstairs. Once we get consistent better weather, Melt might find a huge audience, but I’m not sure how this will work when winter comes again. When I heard this new grilled cheese place was opening on Monday, I wondered what exactly the menu would contain. Then commenter ‘joer’ said he got a buttermilk-fried chicken sandwich and I was on it.

Pichet Ong’s Qi Thai Now Open for Lunch

Qi Thai outside
The lunchers of Midtown West just got another Thai restaurant with the opening of a Midtown branch of Qi (pronounced: “Chee”) Thai restaurant (8th Ave between 42nd and 43rd St). What’ll set this place apart from the original Qi Thai in Union Square, is that notable pâtisserie and restaurateur, Pichet Ong, will be the consulting Chef for the restaurant, and is hoping to focus the flavors on food from the Bangkok region of Thailand.

The early good news – the lunch prices seem more than fair, with everything falling comfortably under the $10 mark. And the restaurant space is exceptionally large for the area, ensuring enough seating to accommodate workday lunchers as well as the inevitable cadre of tourists. To get more of a preview, click through for the lunch menu and a shot of the interior.

Time Out New York Gets Its Midtown Lunch on

Don’t be surprised if you see a few familiar names while flipping through the pages of this week’s Time Out New York. It’s the Lunch issue so naturally they came to us for help.  Blondie, Brownie, Andrea from Downtown Lunch and I each chipped in to represent our corners of town, recommending  a quick bite, a business lunch and delivery for each of our neighborhoods. In addition to the familiar Midtown Lunch spots like Trini Paki Boys Cart, Uncle Gussy’s and Kati Roll Company, we covered a few nice places for a splurge, including Becco, The National and Artisana. You can see the whole set of lunch ideas from all over town on the Time Out New York website with bonus recommendations for the Village, Williamsburg, Chinatown and more.

Contributor Stalking (The “Best Taco Ever” Edition)

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (They’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Shrimp taco dorado from the Mariscos Jalisco Truck in Los Angeles

Blondie checked out 2010 Vendy Fave Patacon Pisao in Elmhurst, while Brownie reported that Robicelli’s cupcakes are now available at Qathra in Ditmas Park. Ultraclay was in Barcelona recently, and hit up Boqueria for some vacation nostalgia, Donny had some delicious pernil from Tio Pio on Court St. in Brooklyn, Brian Hoffman had a fried bologna sandwich at Seersucker in Carroll Gardens, and Chris H had a great dinner at Tenpenny on 46th Street.

Around the rest of the ML Universe… Andrea discovered secret slices at Rubirosa downtown, Jamie does some serious pre-Passover carbo loading in Philly, and I had one of the great tacos I’ve ever eaten in my life from a truck in Los Angeles.

Mexicue and Panera Coming to the Garment District

_MG_8130 - Version 2

Filed under ‘Inevitable, but exciting nonetheless’, there’s good news for the Midtown lunchers located around Penn Station. Flo Fab reports that one of the front runners in the gourmet food truck trend, Mexicue, will be opening a brick and mortar location this summer at 345 7th Ave (between 29th & 30th St). Furthermore, the national chain that everyone loves to hate (but secretly loves), Panera will be opening on the same block, at 330 7th Ave. Looks like after all these years, StreetMeasOnsumer3008 will finally get his wish.  [New York Times; New York Post via Eater]

Sweetery Now Selling Melt Bakery Ice Cream Sandwiches

Sweetery NYC

A month or so ago, Sweetery NYC (formerly Street Sweets) begun carrying ice cream sandwiches. This ice cream sandwich expert saw the flavor combinations and knew that the sandwiches were coming from Melt Bakery. If any of you stopped by the Hester Street Fair last summer, you might have stopped by their booth. And even though the weather hasn’t fully turned to wonderful out, it’s always the time for ice cream. Even if that ice cream comes completely frozen and will set you back a pretty penny.

Schnitzified Eggplant is Better Than I Expected

Veal, pork, chicken, cod. These are the proteins that people think about when they think of the thinly pounded, breaded and fried lunches at Schintzel & Things. And if you’re a true fan, you also know about the infamous Schnitz Burger. But on my latest visit to the truck (which is still doing major business even with the recent opening of the storefront), I was intrigued and seduced by the idea of an eggplant schnitzel.

It’s been mentioned on Midtown Lunch in the past and I’ve seen it on the truck as a regularly featured special, so I figured I should forego my usual veal and give the eggplant schnitzel a try. And while I know Oleg Voss and his crew do a fantastic job with all the vegetable side dishes, like roasted beets with feta and cucumber salad, I was a bit less confident when it comes to frying up a piece of eggplant. I had visions of greasy and mushy aubergine segments.
