Joyride Fro-Yo & Stumptown Truck Spotted on 52nd

Got this email from Lunch’er Robert this morning about the Joyride Fro Yo Truck (first reported about by Grub Street last month) “Spotted a new truck in midtown – Joyride.  52nd and 6th.  They say it’s their second day of ops.  Fro-yo and coffee.  You can get the fro-yo caffeinated (aka “buzzed”).  I’m trying the caffeinated offering now.  Pinkberry-esque.  Coffee = Stumptown!  V tasty.  Had a double espresso at Zibetto right before so might be altogether too much buzz for me.  Now back at the office and the hands are a little shaky.  Not many people sampling.  I have a feeling they’ll eventually flee this corner (a la Schnitzel Truck) so people should try it out before they move on.”  You can follow them on Twitter here.

The Shop Brings Katz’s Pastrami To Midtown (Sort of)

_MG_1328 - Version 2

I don’t know what made me stop in at newly opened restaurant The Shop (5th Avenue at 41st Street) in the swanky boutique hotel, Andaz. It was sure to not be a Midtown Lunch: there aren’t any bargains and obviously its regular clientele are tourists. But, I did check out the lunch menu out of idle curiosity and was shocked to see something I’ve wanted in Midtown for years: Pastrami by Katz’s.

Yes, really. According to someone on staff, the theme of the restaurant is locally produced food and drink. They want to give their guests a bit of a culinary tour of New York, so they stock local pickles and NY State beer and the menu is full of organic this and farm raised that. And when it came to our famed Jewish Delis, they decided to just go get the best in town. I can’t argue with that.

I’m always skeptical when new hands get into old favorites, but being able to get my hands on that luscious pastrami mere blocks from my office would be amazing.

See what I found after the jump.

Get Half Off Ciao Bella Gelato: If you're a fan of the Ciao Bella Gelato shop in Grand Central Terminal, you'll want to get in on this deal.  Get a punch card good for 6 scoops of Ciao Bella gelato for just $10 from Scoop St. (It's also good at the location Downtown, and on the UES.) The punch card is good through November, but you have to buy the deal before the end of this weekend.

Contributor Stalking: Pizza, Meat, Meat, & Sweets

Do you wonder what the ML contributors do when they’re not eating lunch in Midtown? (They’re actually pretty easy to stalk!)

Pizza on the left, Pie on the right.

Danny from Food in Mouth was on St. Marks checking out Totale Pizza and Xi’an Famous Foods (both look amazing), Ultraclay enjoyed the smoked meat from Mile End, Amy went to Meatopia on Governor’s Island, and Blondie and Brownie lived up to their sweet tooth inspired name this week, trying the pie ala mode at Four & Twenty Blackbirds in Brooklyn, and the new cupcake flavors at Robicelli’s

Cake Balls (and Catering) Now Being Served at Ma Peche Milk Bar

DSC00002
In yesterday’s hot weather I was craving some soft serve and decided to walk over to the Momofuku Milk Bar inside Ma Peche (on 55th btw. 5+6th) to see if they had changed up their flavors since they opened. They hadn’t, but I did notice a few newish developments. Cake slices are still out but now they are selling cake truffles. And midtown Milk Bar office catering is definitely in.

Of Course All Those Soup Man Fans Were Tourists!: Yesterday's disappointing re-opening of Soup Kitchen International just another location of the Original Soup Man chain, was a mob scene- and Feast has a great video of the line. (Spoiler: Everybody was from out of town.) They also spoke to Reggie Jackson! (The *real* Reggie Jackson.)

Trying Out McCormick & Schmick’s $10 Lunch Special

_MG_9959 - Version 2

I wasn’t immediately excited when I read about the $10 lunch special at the bar of McCormick & Schmick’s. I like cheap lunch specials at a fancy restaurant just as much as the next guy (i’m looking at you burger from Wolfgang’s, but schlepping up to Rockefeller Center didn’t really seem worth it in this heat. Then I saw that a half po’ boy and lobster bisque was among the options – I reconsidered. I love a po’ boy and haven’t had a one since our ML Team excursion to the Grand Central Oyster Bar. Clearly I was past due.

See what ten bucks gets you after the jump.

Ichi Umi Buffet Has Reopened: From Lunch'er Wailun: "After being shuttered for weeks, it looks like the Japanese buffet joint Ichi Umi (on 32nd btw. Mad+5th) has reopened." I think a field trip with our competitive eating friends is in order... uh... you know.  To make sure it's still good.

Lunch’er Chris Reports: Taste of Summer at Rock Center (and Midtown’s First Taste of Bill’s Bar & Burger)

Back in May Lunch’er “Chris” was kind enough to tell us about Arirang’s kal gook soo, and the soup from the Korean Noodle Soup cart on 49th. Yesterday he checked out the Taste of Summer event going on in Rock Center during lunch through Thursday, and filed this report for those who were considering checking it out…

There’s nothing like a generous tip, and thanks to yesterdays tip about the “Taste of Summer” thing going on in front of Rock Center (which includes a sneak peek of the much anticipated Bill’s Bar & Burger), I rushed over to check it out. Just like last year, Rockefeller Center has beckoned a selection of restaurants from the subterranean corridors in order to vend a budget friendly (almost all items are under $10) taste of their wares on the ground level main plaza. In the midst of the lineup of chain restaurants, harmless delis and upscale steakhouses, are there any bright spots in Rock Center? And what’s this hubbub over Bill’s Bar & Burger?

Find out after the jump…
