Oms/b Celebrates Anniversary w/ Giveaway

It’s hard to believe Oms/b, the delicious Japanese rice ball place on 45 btw. Lex+3rd has been open for 6 years!  And to celebrate they’re giving away a free gift with every purchase today and tomorrow (10/21-22). Rockabirdie got a “packet of pocky, hi-chew, and fried tofu things.” Sounds pretty sweet to me…

Update: Biriyani Cart Moves Sandwich Land Across the Street

DSC04905

After yesterday’s run in with the man the Biriyani Cart decided today to move their “Sandwich Land” cart across 46th street, in an effort to reduce the clutter in front of Cafe Europa.  The Biriyani Cart itself stayed in its normal spot, and the Carribbean Spice cart returned also- but very few customers seemed to notice the Sandwich Land cart parked across the street, making the scene in front of the Biriyani Cart even more hectic than usual.  As of now the police haven’t returned, and nobody from Cafe Europa has said anything… but there is no question all the vendors on the block are a little tense.

Cafe Amande May Not Serve Beignets, But Their Korean Food is Good

DSC04884

Earlier this week I reported that the generic deli named Cafe Du Monde was forced to change their name to Cafe Amande.  But the far more exciting news about the place came via email from Lunch’er Amanda:

Did you know Cafe Du Monde Cafe Amande on 37th between 5th and 6th has Korean food in the back? Bibimbap to rival that of Koreatown. Comes with miso soup and extra chili sauce (make sure you ask if they don’t give it to you because they almost always do). No sides but I usually just take some kimchee from the pay per pound buffet (it’s homemade by one of the cashier ladies!)

Korean food from a generic deli? Homemade kimchee? I’m in.

Who Wants Free Lunch For a Week?

On Tuesday I walked into the Japanese fast food spot Washoku Cafe, on 37th btw. Mad+5th, and it was hopping! I mean really crowded, especially compared to earlier in the year when they first opened. The quality of food at bento places like this is far better when there are crowds, and everything I saw yesterday looked really good. It was actually overwhelming. I’d need a small army to attack this place. Which got me thinking… why not assemble a small army?

Yushi Introduces “Greatest Hits” Bento

Today is duck pancake day at Yushi, but we’ve just got word about another special (available every day). The “Greatest Hits” Bento box features two pork and chive dumplings, two chicken teriyaki skewers (minus the actual sticks, so they can “get more in the box that way”), edamame, and fried rice for $8.  Could be good…

Free Coffee and Whoopie Pie Alert: The Street Sweets truck will be on 50th Street btw. 6+7th Ave. today giving away free coffee and mini pumpkin whoopie pies from 12:15 to 2pm.  Freeloaders engage...

Dallas BBQ Has Two Decent Lunch Specials

dallasbbq

It would take a lot to get me to eat in the tourist packed hell hole that is 42nd Street btw. 7+8th Avenues… but two full meals for $10 qualifies as a lot right? When the fight broke out last month between The Feedbag and Serious Eats over whether or not Dallas BBQ was good, I wondered whether or not they still did that $10 special I used to see advertised in the subway. Well, it looks like they do. $10 gets you two 1/2 rotisserie chickens (which last time I checked was a whole rotisserie chicken), two orders of soup, two servings of potato or rice, and two pieces of cornbread. The only catch is it’s eat in only, and the deal is only available Monday-Thursday between 11am and Noon or 2pm and 5pm. On Fridays, for some reason, it’s available 11am to 5pm (bonus!) Too much food? (gasp!) Or don’t want to eat in Dallas BBQ? They also have a new $5 bbq chicken sandwich.

BREAKING: Trouble in Biriyani Cart Land?

A few reports have come in today about police activity in front of the Vendy Award winning Biriyani Cart (on 46th and 6th.) According to Lunch’er Chris it might have had something to do with the crowds of people waiting on line for biriyani in front of Cafe Europa (the generic Midtown deli on the same corner):

“So I was down at Europa (on 6th and 46) grabbing my standard boring salad and on my way out I notice the manager talking to a couple cops. I heard him complaining about the crowds for the Briyani Cart blocking the sidewalk, which is kind of odd considering it doesn’t really effect the entrance at all. Anyways, you might want to ask the Briyani guys if the cops have been bothering them today at all.”

Just confirmed with Meru, the owner of the Biriyani Cart, that the cops did in fact show up earlier today- and have just now returned for a second time to issue tickets.

Forget 40 Carrots… There’s Printon 56

At Lunch Now: More frogurt hits MidtownBack in June of last year we noticed that Printon 56 (on 56th btw. 5+6th) was carrying the same brand of FroYo as the ultra popular 40 Carrots in Bloomingdales, but could only assume that it tasted the same (I’m not much of a froyo connoisseur.) Well, Blondie and Brownie have now confirmed that the stuff they serve as Printon is “comparable” to 40 Carrots. Huzzah!
