Midtown Lunch

Now that Downtown has its very own section of the site, what are we going to post on Fridays at 10am? Answer… how about a new column devoted to those lunches just south of the ML boundaries. Please give a warm welcome to Jason Lam from the blog Me So Hungry. Every Friday at 10am he’ll post about lunches in Murray Hill south, Gramercy, Flatiron, and everything in between… or as we’ll call it from now on: Flatiron Lunch.

One thing I’m grateful for in New York is the easy access to a good Chinese steamed pork bun, one of my childhood favorites. Although most of the bakeries are in Chinatown, it’s good to know there’s one right on 23rd St near the School of Visual Arts. Not just a place to get a good steamed pork bun, but some other good food too.

After a giving up fried foods for Lent, I had a post-Easter hankering for falafel, so I headed over to 46th street to hit up Moshe’s Falafel just back from their Passover hiatus. While waiting to place my order discovered that they’ve raised their prices across the board.

So, despite all the PR hype, Blondie sends word that Market (in the Hyatt Grand Central) still hasn’t opened yet.  So we’re still not sure if this is going to be worthwhile for Midtown Lunch’ing purposes.  Tri Trip Grill, on the other hand, is right up our alley and after months of waiting is planning to open on Monday in the Rock Center Concourse.  If PR photos are your thing, Feast and Thrillist both have an inside look. The end of the month usually involves 12 hour days and no lunch, but as I helped wrap up March, I found myself daydreaming about the next sandwich mutant in Cer Te’s (on 55th btw 5th+6th) Sandwich of the Month club! The Fall of Saigon was so wrongly-named, so unbelievable tasty I even got it twice. When I read about the April Sandwich, Mr. Potato Skin, I was immediately excited (potato skins are a close second to wings on my bar food list.) And then I saw Masto’s pictures, potato instead of bread?! Mind blown.

I was pumped to hear that Market, the new takeout place in the Grand Hyatt (on 42nd btw. Park+Lex), will be carrying out-of-bounds sweet stuff, like Macaron Cafe, near Grand Central. But then Lunch’er “hightemp” told us about a new Macaron Cafe that’s moving in on E 59th btw. Madison+Park! A staff member at the original location (on W 36th St btw 7th+Bway) said they hope to open the new location at the beginning of July. With all these recent dessert finds, I may never have to leave Midtown East.

It appears as if the Hallo Berlin Cart (on 54th and 5th) has gone and disappeared.  Lunch’er “Rootbeer” commented the other day that it hasn’t been seen in months, and the same discussion popped up on Yelp as well. Hallo Berlin co-founder Rolf Babiel passed away this past October, but the cart returned shortly thereafter with his brother at the helm. And this isn’t their usual July vacation time either. If anyone has any insight, leave it in the comments. For now I guess we’ll have to settle for Hallo Berlin Express (on 9th Ave. btw. 50+51st)

Ma Peche aka “Momofuku Midtown” (on 56th btw. 5+6th) is barely four hours old and arguments have already started about whether it’s worth the money. Obviously, lunch’ers aren’t gonna spend $150 on lunch everyday, but Ma Peche’s Milk Bar and $10 Midtown Lunch specials – which they’re still serving in the Chambers Hotel mezzanine you can still order online– are right up our alley!
