Anybody want to do a (blind) bahn mi tasting?

Does anybody want to do a blind or side-by-side bahn mi tasting?

This is all open to suggestion, but here's what I'm thinking: (at least) 3 of us should coordinate and do a comparison of Yushi (Wednesday, $7.95) bahn mi and Ma Peche ($10 pre-ordered). Or, if we're really ambitious, 5 of us should compare Yushi, Ma Peche, Nicky's and Chinatown. The categories would be something like quality, taste, authenticity and value.

The trick would be coordinating ourselves in terms of timing and meeting in the middle so that no sandwich ends up particularly unfresh due to longer traveling time. This would be tricky if we were to include the downtown options.

Or we can leave this up to the folks at http://newyork.seriouseats.com/, but someone should do it!

  1. I forgot to mention Baoguette, they would have to be included...so if we do Midtown only, maybe 3 bahn mi's, 5 people...?

A member less than 24 hrs and already off to a beautiful start. I would love to participate, but honestly, I don't really know that much about bahn mi. If you need an alternate, you've got your man. You should use palate cleaners of shots of Vietnamese snake wine.

Yvo already did this with the Chinatown places.

This could be lots of fun!! I think Ma Peche might win (High end Bahn Mi) but lose on affordability.

hi. i just wanted to say... it's actually spelled "banh mi." the h is at the end.

  6. Ambitious

I would love to try this, but it seems difficult to pull off!

Difficult during a work-day to plan for but a weekend is a Def.

I'm sure Chinatown would win on affordability, but obviously not on quality when you compare high-end banh mi.

@Dean I was about to write "if you can't spell it..." lol ;) but realized it was a new person so she shouldn't be exposed to my snark just yet.

I'm down to do it... I did do this with the Chinatown places (thanks Steve) but it was not all at once. Problem with doing it all in one shot is getting full, and the obvious "I can tell which one is which by looking at it so it isn't really blind"

I'm sure something can be arranged though :)

  9. I'd be interested.
I am relatively equidistant from those 3 places in midtown.
Chinatown would be a bit trickier...

I could probably do it on a weekday if that works for people.

  11. Hm, if we did it during the week as SMO3008 suggests, we cannot include the Ma Peche baNH mi. And we'd have to do it on a Wednesday to include the Yushi banh mi. Another Midtown candidate we should include: Boi to go.

So with 4 Midtown sandwiches (Ma Peche, Yushi, Baoguette & Boi to Go), and 5-6 of us (mghu777, Mamacita, Ambitious, neil, StreetMeasOnsumer3008 and myself -- if I missed anyone, please chime in!), that would be doable since Ma Peche and Yushi can be pre-ordered, and I can travel to Lex & 25th to Baoguette and back to Midtown.

That said, I can also travel to Chinatown (one place), Baoguette and back to Midtown East. Also, I'll bring a camera.

Each other person can pick up one sandwich, then we can split the total cost among all tasters. We should make sure we have at least one sandwich per person, so everyone gets lunch; maybe we pick up 2 of one kind if necessary (or 1 regular & 1 hot and as in the case of Baoguette).

So does next Wednesday work for everyone? Or the following? Anything else, other suggestions?

mghu777: I think so long as the idea of multiple pork products and crunchy veggies with a Vietnamese flavoring on french bread appeals to you, you're good to go!

Yvo: which place in Chinatown? I didn't find the post about the Chinatown comparison -- can you comment the link?

  12. Sorry, I meant: if we did it during the weekEND as SMO3008 suggests

    grr...need more caffeine

  13. Yvo among our tasters too.

Okay, I am going to get another cup of coffee and stop adding comments about what I missed in my post.
