Tribeca’s JR Sushi Fulfills All Your Bento And Bubble Tea Needs

When the weather gets disgustingly hot, sometimes the idea of eating anything above room temperature sounds as appealing as eating a certain lobster salad sandwich. So this week I didn’t want to walk too far to get lunch, wanted something light and after considering a banh mi instead ended up at JR Sushi 2 on W. Broadway (btw.  Chambers & Warren). You may know it as “that place that sells bubble tea” as that seems to be what they advertise the most. They also have a decent selection of lunch specials for less than $10 and I headed into the air conditioning to get a bento box.

How Does Falafel At Alan’s Halal Stack Up Against The Competition?

A while back I was busted by a street cart owner enjoying a falafel platter from his competition across the street, Moshe’s Falafel Truck. The man told me the falafel at his cart, Alan’s Halal, was better. Then, this discussion popped up in the forums about this awesome falafel at a cart on Water & Old Slip which turns out to be none other than Alan’s. This sounded like something worth investigating but it wasn’t until this week that I was able to both check out the cart owner’s claim that his falafel was fabulous, and see if it was a good deal. Update: Turns out there was some confusion about the name of this cart, and it’s Alan’s, not Adel’s.

In Case You’re Looking For More Cheap Eats…: A new site launched today called Real Cheap Eats that highlights $10 and under picks from a stable of food bloggers including myself and fellow ML contributors Chris, Blondie and Brownie. You can discover a new downtown lunch, or perhaps where to get good Bangladeshi food in the Bronx.

Curry & Tandoor Corner: Kebabs On The Fringe Of Chinatown

Most people know about the dirt-cheap cabbie favorite Lahore Deli located in a closet-size space on Crosby St. in SoHo, but were you aware they have a competitor a short walk away? Right next door to a Vietnamese restaurant is Curry & Tandoor Corner (listed online as Welcome To India). It’s the place that looks like a bodega but isn’t. When I went in for lunch there was no one eating there – only the proprietor waiting for customers and a bored looking man reading the paper. This is sort of sad because based on the lunch I had here the food is great, cheap, and sometimes you’re just in the mood for a kati roll.

Eddie’s Pizza Truck’s Return To FiDi A Great Excuse To Eat A Bar Pie

It’s not often you see a food truck with a calorie count listed on its menu, as I discovered Eddie’s Pizza Truck does when I finally got to eat one of its bar pies earlier in the week. (Really, no one wants to know how much those Korean tacos or kati rolls are adding to your waistline). Eddie’s clocks its cheese bar pie at 270 calories and that only encouraged me to add sausage to it. The truck returned to the Financial District after debuting downtown a year ago and then abandoning the weekly parking spot in favor of more busy pastures. The truck makes a stop every Friday on Hudson St. in SoHo, which is a hike to get to for me, so I stopped by to check out the $10 bar pie lunch special while it was within walking distance.

Going Vegetarian At Meat-Centric Pita Press Isn’t A Bad Decision

When you walk into Pita Press – the Greek rotisserie on Cedar St. (btw. William & Pearl), one of the first things you see is chunks of lamb and beef slowly turning behind glass doors. Next to that is a grill where chicken souvlaki skewers cook. To say that this place focuses on meats may be an understatement. Why then, would I go in and order the vegetarian option on the menu? Well, sometimes I get meat fatigue and the words “zucchini feta fritters” called to me.

Au Bon Pain Brings Us A Bastardized Lobster Roll

Have you ever wanted to try lobster salad stuffed into a croissant? Well, Au Bon Pain has started selling just that, bragging that you can get a quarter-pound of lobster meat (and mayo!) in its sandwich that runs a mere $12.99. Judging by the picture alone, I wouldn’t eat this thing, but what about all of you lunchers? Would you eat an attempt at a lobster roll from a chain bakery to save a few bucks over one from Luke’s Lobster or Urban Lobster Shack? Check out a picture of the sandwich after the jump.
