Midtown Lunch

This just in from a tipster: “Come to participating Ben & Jerry’s shops on November 4th from 5-8pm, show us you voted and you’ll get a free scoop of ice cream. Show us your “I Voted” sticker, a photo of you in front of your polling station, do the “I Voted dance” or just tell us you voted.”  A new president, and free ice cream- all on the same day.  It might be too much for me to handle.

I hate supporting crap like this, but as a service to all of you dudes who I know will be into it- I feel obligated.  (And you know who you are.) According to this press release, Ivanka Trump will be outside of the Grace Building in Midtown today (on 42nd Street & 6th Ave) handing out free <product whose name is not worth mentioning because it goes against everything this site stands for>.  Unfortunately, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the press release, because I found it randomly… in other words, stalk at your own risk.

It’s over now, but if this photo is any indication, it was complete pandemonium at AQ Kafe today during their free food giveaway.  Danny from Food in Mouth sent us the photo and had this to say: “Insane in the membrane…yo i couldn’t get in that line, it wasn’t moving and it was LONG. so no idea how good it was…”  A few reports of the scene and food were posted as comments to yesterday’s post (if such a thing interests you, they’re after the jump- along with another photo of the madness.)

Thanks to all the lunchers who emailed me about this one. Free coffee is nice, but free sandwiches is like hitting the jackpot. The new AQ Kafe on Broadway btw. 58+59th will give out free sandwiches on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Available for eat in or take out, you’ll get a choice between their Turkey (w/ jarlsberg, lingonberry jam, and lettuce on wheat), Vine Ripened Tomato (w/ cucumber, farmer’s cheese, and sprouts on wheat), or the Tuna Salad (with tomato, pickled onions, and celery on wheat). Bummer that one of the choices isn’t from the hot sandwich menu (swedish meatballs anybody!?!) and the gravlax club probably would be too much to ask for- but whatever. You won’t hear me complaining about free food. Plus, the manager told me they plan on doing more of these kinds of giveaways in the coming weeks, so stay tuned…

Eater is reporting that another Pret is opening on 3rd Ave. btw. 44+45th, right next to where the new Boi Sandwich is going to be opening.  This should mean another one of those free sandwich giveaways. If you work near there, keep us up to date on the progress! (They usually hand out fliers the day before the grand opening…)

• Zibetto’s Espresso Bar on 56th and 6th is surrounded by 4 Starbucks [Grub St.]
• Scoping out bars at Grand Central, Port Authority and Penn Station [AMNY]

Cold Stone Creamery is giving away free 3 oz servings of two special ice cream creations from 5 to 8 p.m. to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. There are two locations in or close to Midtown (one on 42nd btw. 7+8th, and one on 9th Ave. btw. 50+51st). To find a different location, go to their website.

This just in from a reader: “Not sure how much longer it’s going to last, but there’s a Mr. Softee truck parked on 53rd between 5th and Madison giving out free ice cream. Apparently sponsored by Maxwell Medical (not sure how ice cream and health go together, but that’s the sign hanging on the truck). I went down at 2:00 and it was there.”
