Mexico Blvd’s Lunch Combos Are the Way To Go

Mexico Blvd hit the streets last year, and after Anna’s first look, I made a mental note that I needed to get myself a torta. Fast forward an entire year, and I realized I had totally failed at doing that. Luckily, they’ve parked in Midtown often lately, so I was able to remedy this wrong pretty easily. Better yet, I got to check out their lunch combos.

Go Spicy at the New Thai Food Cart At Your Own Risk

Last Tuesday, we reported news of a new Thai cart on 52nd and 6th Ave and despite its makeshift appearance, your guys’ comments seemed to suggest that this cart is totally worth checking out. I’ve had the opportunity now to stop by a couple times and I can confirm that the cart is, in fact, a great deal.

Bento Sushi Opening Next Month in Midtown East

Bento Sushi is bringing its pre-made sushi rolls to Midtown East next month when it opens a new location on 3rd Ave. (btw. 43rd+44th). Bento Sushi has been covered fairly extensively on this blog ever since it was known as Sushi by Bento Nouveau. We’ve found its udon soup and rice dishes good, but its sushi left us wanting.

I’m most excited to try the udon, but having an option for decent, affordable grab-and-go sushi isn’t bad either. Anyone else looking forward to its opening?

Eastside Lunchers, You Need To Try My Pie’s Square Slices

From the outside, My Pie Pizzeria Romana doesn’t look like much. In fact, I’ve hurried by dozens of times without noticing it at all, since it almost blends in with its neighboring shops. But, once I walked into the tiny shop for one of their square slices, I was in love. And that’s something, considering the stiff competition in the pizza department in this city. There are several signs that will tell you they’re serving up homemade Romano-style pizza crust, which has no sugar, and they use flour imported from Italy. I was intrigued.

Pitopia Celebrates Israeli Independence w/ 65 Cent Falafel Pita

Today is Yom Haazmaut (who knew!?) and two celebrate Pitopia (on Broadway & 37th) has got two pretty great deals going today.  A $3.65 shawarma and pita would be an amazing deal, if they weren’t also offering falafel in pita for just 65 cents.  Neither deal is valid on delivery and it looks like you have to print out the coupons to score it.  Click on the icons above for larger versions, or print the coupons off of their Facebook page.

Pitopia, 1369 Broadway (on 37th). 212-792-6765

New Pie Face Opens Today: The new Pie Face location at 1407 Broadway (btw 38+39) we wrote about last week opens today. In fact, they teamed up with Motown: The Musical, to launch a new limited edition summer berry pie (inspired by Motown founder and music mogul Berry Gordy), which will debut at this new location. As we've come to expect, there will be a prize wheel with opportunities to win free pies, coffee and dessert, and they'll be handing out free samples near the store.

Midtown Happy Hour: Pod 39 Rooftop Lounge Has A Great View But Not Much Else

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent posts about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Ah, New York in the springtime. I can’t think of anything better… Except for drinking outside in New York in the springtime. So I’m beginning my journey of outdoor bars in Midtown — I only have a small window of time when the outdoor bar areas open for winter and my fat ass gets to hot to sit outdoors, you see.

First stop: the rooftop lounge (which, when fully functioning, will serve the same food as Salvation Taco) at the newly opened Pod 39 hotel. I’ve been exited to visit since I caught wind of the hotel catering to NYC visitors on a budget, hoping that would translate to the bar and restaurant.

Fagiolini “House of Lasagna” Lives Up to Its Name

Since I’ve been working in Midtown, I’ve walked by Fagiolini (Lex btw. 40th+39th) almost everyday on my way home, and always wondered if it was any good. Certainly, any restaurant that calls itself the “House of Lasagna” had better be able to back it up. Alas, I never stopped in, mostly because its prices are outside the ML limit. At least, they used to be, until I spotted a chalkboard sign advertising an $8.50 express lunch special.

Flatiron Lunch: Atomic Wings Joins Forces with KalBQ for a Whole Lot of Options

A quick little bit of Flatiron Lunch news before we get to the review… Mad Park News confirmed this week the dates of this year’s spring Mad. Sq. Eats extravaganza. So get ready for May 3!  Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.  Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

So, over on Lexington Avenue something interesting happened at Atomic Wings. Atomic Wings itself is carrying on as normal with boneless buffalo wings, chicken sandwiches, burgers, etc. But, it got more interesting with the addition of KalBQ, a Korean Mexican BBQ spot sharing the space.
