First Look at Beacon’s Side Door Pig Sandwich

Beacon Side Door

Clearly, all of you were just as excited as we were that Beacon’s Side Door take-out window was reopening yesterday and would be offering a suckling pig sandwich, as the first batch sold out by sometime around noon. As luck would have it, I ended up paying them a visit around 2pm, at which time they had the pork sandwiches back in stock. For $10, you’ll get a suckling pork sandwich on Beacon’s signature onion roll, a side of BBQ sauce, a bag of chips, and a drink.

Papa Perrone Brings Back Panelle Sandwiches Today

DSC00167

Way back in November, Papa Perrone started testing out panelle sandwiches (chickpea fritters on crusty bread with ricotta cheese, and parm). I braved the rain and cold to seek one out and dutifully wrote it up for a post. I waited to schedule the review until they offered it again. I waited and waited and waited. Finally last night, I noticed via the ML Twitter Tracker that they were planning on serving up panelle today, so without further ado, here’s your first look at the this traditional dish.

Congrats to Kelly Y! Over the weekend she won a slot on the judging panel for Street Meat Palooza 4 simply because she bought her ML 5th Birthday Party tix early. Not sure if you know this, but in addition to getting all you can eat from a ton of the best places in Midtown (including 4 Vendy Award winners), and all you can drink from Brooklyn Brewery and GuS, your ticket to the Midtown Lunch 5th Birthday Party also enters you to win a ton of great birthday presents. In fact, we’ll be giving away a big prize every week between now and June 11th plus we’ll have more to give away at the event itself. This week it’s a $100 gift certificate to Bill’s Bar and Burger. And all you have to do to be entered in the giveaway is buy a ticket to our Birthday Party before this Sunday (5/22) at Midnight. And the best part is, all proceeds go to the Street Vendor Project. PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Jess”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Jess, a student for 4 more days who hates bananas but loves pie.

Name: Jess

Age: 22

Occupation: I’m technically a full-time student until I graduate on Saturday. After then, I’ll be a part-time foreign claims examiner, part-time freelance writer and full-time destroying my kitchen with my own cooking.

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 6th btw. 47+48th

Favorite Kind of Food: I’m an adventurous eater, so it’s hard to really pinpoint my all-time fave. Lately, though, I’ve been craving some good Middle Eastern cuisine (can’t get enough of falafel and babaganoush) and vegan dishes. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good plate of meat. But it’s intriguing to discover all the different things you can do with tofu and seitan.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: I have a HUGE disdain for bananas. Blame it on the Mama Bear force-feeding me too many when I was a toddler, but I can’t be anywhere near ‘em.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Café Zaiya (on 43rd btw. Mad+5th) holds a special place in my heart for their epic bento boxes and egg salad sandwich (random, I know). Burger Joint (on 56th btw. 6+7th) makes my tummy feel immensely satisfied. The Halal Guys cart (the one on the southeast corner) is also good for my chicken and rice cravings at 12:46 PM or 2:19 AM.

First Look at the Red Hook Lobster Pound Truck

Red Hook Lobster Pound Truck

As we pointed out last week, midtown went from zero lobster roll trucks to two lobster roll trucks in the blink of an eye- and just in time for summer. I missed out on Luke’s Lobster Truck last week, so when I saw that the Red Hook Lobster Pound Truck was a mere block from my office yesterday (and didn’t have a line!), I hurried to check it out.
