Friday is Last Day to Get Your Tafu On: A Passion for Food sends worth that Tafu, the Japanese tea and sweets shop on 51st btw. Lex+3rd, will be closing for good on Friday. This is the only brick and mortar store for Mitzy's Macarons, so you may want to stock up while you still can.

Kyochon to Open in June

Grub Street re-breaks the news that Kyochon will be opening a location of their Korean fried chicken chain on the corner of 32nd and 5th Ave. “Details are still coming together, but we’re told it’ll have the same menu as the Flushing location and will open in June.”

Benjamin Steakhouse Doesn’t Quite Get “Midtown Lunch”

After receiving an email from a Benjamin Steakhouse PR person, I politely told them that Midtown Lunches have to be under $10. Her reply: “We actually do have some great things under $10.00 that I would love for you to consider! Two items on the menu [that] are perfect for lunch are the French Onion Soup and the Wedge Salad. They are big sellers during lunchtime. Additionally, I’ve attached images for your review.” Wedge salad? You’re joking, right? I believe that’s what is know in “the business” as an appetizer. Sell a steak sandwich *and* soup or salad for $10, and then we’ll talk.

Panda Restaurant Will Open Tomorrow; Crisp Next Week

notopenyet

Neither of the two new places we thought may open today are opening. The new location of Crisp (on 40th btw. 6+B’way) didn’t get the visit from the gas company they were promised, so they’re planning on opening next Monday.  Panda Restaurant (on 46th btw. 5+6th) said they need one more day, but will definitely be opening tomorrow… and, we’re hearing it’s not just Chinese food- but also Italian take out.  Weird. I think I may have to be there on opening day.

Milant is Back, Baby

Milant Gourmet Deli
Milant Gourmet DeliThere was a time, not long ago, when Milant (on 39th btw. Lex+3rd) was considered the best sandwich place in Midtown.  Then the DOH hit, followed by a weird period where they were closed more than they were open. Since that time, I’ve only been back to Milant once- for a good lunch, which I enjoyed– but there is no question their reputation has been hurt.  On Friday I walked by Milant once again, to see what was cookin’, and found they had quietly entered the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge.  Sort of…

How Many Inches Before It’s Too Much?: Blondie and Brownie become the latest site to weigh in on Golosi, the new pizza/gelato combo on Park Ave. btw. 41+42nd. They seem much more excited about the presence of frozen Yolato soft serve, but had some nice things to say about the potato pizza as well (despite worrying "How many inches is too many inches?")

Rolly Wrap Technology Too Advanced For These Times

rollywrapfail

It’s looking more and more like the rolly wraps are gone for good from the Old Bridge Deli (on Lex btw. 40+41st.)  The machine that used to make the half burrito/half calzone concoctions has disappeared, and when I asked one of the workers about it he made it seem like they were gone for good. Clearly this was an idea far ahead of its time…

Cafe Cello Sees DOH Yellow

doh

My heart almost exploded on Friday afternoon as I walked towards a shuttered Cafe Cello (on 46th btw. 5+6th.)  It might be the first time in Midtown Lunch history where I was actually *hoping* to see a DOH sticker.  Dealing with the alternative scenario (the place shutting down entirely) would have been too much for me to handle.  After all, it’s the roast pork from Cafe Cello that I’ve been using for two years as the iconic image of ML.  The lunch of all midtown lunches.  Thankfully as I got closer, I saw the gate was only half closed- which usually means one thing…

Baoguette Planning Two More Midtown Locations: Back in March, we urged Baoguette to expand into Midtown proper, and it looks like they might be taking our advice.  via Always Hungry's twitter: "Apparently two more baoguettes are opening in midtown - straight from the guys at the original lex location."
