City Cracks Down on Wafels and Dinges: According to Kim from the Treats Truck, the city has put up no parking signs on 46th btw. 5+6th, the new daily spot for the Wafels and Dinges Truck.  They had to park on 44th on Tuesday and Wednesday, and plan to be on 45th & 6th for today (Friday), but we'll see if this ends up being permanent.  I'll keep an eye out...

Treats Truck Unveils 2 New Cookies Named by You

The Treats Truck July contest to name a new cookie has come to an end, and the winner is: The Nutty Co-worker (left), an oatmeal cookie with nuts.  Future versions may even contain toffee (don’t get too excited.) Congrats are also in order to Blondie and Brownie. Their cookie, “The Peanut Butter Jamwich” was the runner up (on the right).  Two peanut butter cookies with peanut butter and jelly sandwiched in the middle. Both cookies are now on sale at the truck, which will be at 38th and 5th Ave. today from 1 to 3:30pm.  Both winners got gift certificates, and the grand prize winner got a t-shirt. (Update: The Jamwich may be the only one of the two available at the truck today.)

Cooling Off With Tropical Shakes from Margon

Inspired by Profiled Lunch’er “Lou” and his love of morir sonando (the Dominican orange creamsicle drink) I headed over to Margon (on 46th btw. 6+7th) yesterday to sample their menu of tropical shakes.  I’m not a huge fan of orange, so I perused their list for inspiration which included passion fruit, banana, papaya, tamarind, wheat (whatever the hell that is), and guanabana, which was recommended by Profiled Midtown Lunch’er “Matt”.  But the one that stuck out for me was “mamey” a melon described on the menu as tasting like “pumpkin, chocolate, and almond, or a mixture of sweet potato, avocado, and honey.” How could I not?

Thick and creamy, it tasted exactly as described.  They make them to order in a blender next to the sandwich counter in the front, so I’m guessing it may take awhile during lunchtime crush.  If you don’t want to deal with the madness, do what I did: make it your late afternoon snack.  At $3.75 it’s not cheap, but it’s pretty refreshing, borderlines as a dessert, and is certainly preferable to the new (crap) smoothies at Starbucks.

Arby’s Fans Rejoice! Chain Returning to NYC

DSC07804
Devastated Arby’s Fan (not me)

When the one and only Arby’s on the island of Manhattan closed at the beginning of the year, fans were inconsolable.  Where will we go to get our beef n’ cheese fix?!?!  Your wails of sadness have been heard by corporate.  Arby’s has just announced that they will be opening 41 new stores in the New York City metro area over the next 10 years.  Bologna style roast beef (covered in cheese) for all!!!  [Serious Eats: New York]

Gelato From a Cart Now (Kebabs Coming Soon): It's just out of bounds, but Peter Cherches is reporting that you can get "8-10 flavors of gelati and sorbetti" from a cart in front of Nino's Poisitano (on 2nd Ave. btw. 47+48th).  Other exciting news for Midtown East lucnhers: a second location of Turkish restaurant Ali Baba will be opening on 46th & 2nd Avenue very soon.

Sam’s House Cafe is Just Bagelfeller in New Clothes

DSC09908

For those who were hoping Bagelfeller (on 48th btw. 5+6th) would morph into a decent Midtown Lunch, I’ve got some bad news.  They changed the name (it’s called Sam’s House Cafe now), and they’ve added a weird greenish counter, but the food seems to be mostly the same.  The salad bar, the weird tex-mex food, the sushi… it’s all there.  So much for hopes…

Korean Fried Chicken Coming to Midtown For Lunch?!?: Posted in the comments yesterday: "Based on some of the feedback that I have gathered from this site, I have been trying to convince an investor group to open a Korean style fried chicken (ie: Bonchon Chicken) in Midtown. Do you think you would go for after work chicken and beer? If anyone has suggested locations, please let me know. I am thinking somewhere in the 50’s btw 6th Ave and Madison?" Hmmm. Let me think about this... uh, yeah! As long as it's open for lunch too...

Touch of India May be the Last Under $10 Indian Buffet in Midtown

It’s been a while since I buffeted it up at lunchtime in Midtown.  When I first started this blog, there were quite a few buffets that fell under the Midtown Lunch price range.  There was Rangole on 46th btw. 5+6th (now closed), Al Baraka Turkish Buffet on 55th btw. Lex+3rd (now called Kannaat), Arang in Koreatown (they stopped doing buffet), Chinese Midtown Buffet on 7th btw. 39+40th, International Food House latin buffet on 35th btw. 7+8th) and Curry Dream on 39th btw. 5+6th.  I made an exception for the $10.99 vegetarian Indian buffet Sukhadia on 45th btw. 5+6th,  and Spice Fusion became my favorite buffet in Midtown when they opened last year on 8th Ave. btw. 47+48th. Since that time, almost every one of these buffets have either closed or raised their prices, leaving West Tandoori Club on 37th btw. 7+8th, the last remaining under $10 Indian buffet in Midtown.

Last month, when the W.T.C. closed for “renovations,” I figured that was it.  Even if they re-opened as a buffet, it’s not going to remain under $10.  So imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago, West Tandoori Club re-opened as “Touch of India” with an $8.95 lunch buffet.   Last friday, I headed over to check it out…  Read more »

Is The Party Over at Milant?

Listed on the right as my favorite sandwich in Midtown, Milant on 39th btw. Lex+3rd has been having some issues of late. Shuttered by the DOH, they’ve now been “closed for rennovations” for a few weeks. Before their rennovations, one commenter had this to say: “Went to Milant in June because I was craving gazpacho. There was a definite funk in the air, the sandwich was on at least day-old bread (tough and chewy), and the gazpacho, which cost an extra $1, had huge chunks of onion and tasted like canned tomatoes and refrigerator.” Even the rennovations are sounding a little dicey according to another commenter: “Walked by Milant. People inside looking like they were doing inventory or something. Place hasn’t been “renovated” and all the same food is sitting in there.”

It’s not sounding good. I walked by yesterday and the place was as described. Shuttered, with all the food still sitting in the windows and display cases. Not a good sign. We’ll see what happens when they re-open, but one thing is for sure… I may stay away on opening day (they’ve got to replace the old food, right?) In the meantime, I’m taking taking Milant off my favorites until they get their act together. Anybody have a worthy replacement for best sandwich in Midtown? Homefront Deli? Macaron Cafe? Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments…

The Ruby Tuesday Burger is Good?: At $11.99 for their cheapest burger, it's out of the Midtown Lunch price range- but apparently the burger at Ruby Tuesday's in Times Square (on 7th Ave. & 41st St.) is really good.  I still will never step foot inside that place just on principle, but for burger fans willing to spend a little bit extra,  AHT is usually right on about this stuff.
