Free Empanada Alert

Barros Luco, the just out of bounds Chilean sandwich shop on 52nd and 2nd, celebrated their one year anniversary on Saturday.  And to celebrate they’ll be giving away free empanadas today with any purchase.  You can choose between cheese, ham and cheese, or spinach, and it’s only good while supplies last.  Freeloaders, engage.

Ying Du Hit by the DOH: Yesterday Lunch'er "mw" posted this bad news in the forums:  Ying Du (on 38th btw. 7+8th) has been closed by the Department of Health.  It's not the first (or second) time this has happened (and not exactly a shock), but we hope it gets cleared to open back up soon!  If you work near there, let us know in the comments when they open back up.

Manchester Pub Has New $7 Lunch Special

Remember Manchester Pub, the just out of bounds bar on 2nd Ave. btw. 48+49th that got us excited with their mini pork tenderloin sandwiches and chicken and waffles?  Well it looks like their lunch menu just got a bit cheaper.  From 11am to 3pm daily you can now get any one of their sandwiches (normally priced $9-11) for just $7.  And for all you booze hounds, you can add a beer for just $3.  Don’t think they have the pork tenderloin sandwich, but we’re sure you can make due with their braised short rib sandwich or special BLT.

Onya in the NY Times: Not sure how we missed this one, but last week Onya (on 47th btw. Lex+3rd) was featured in the New York Times! Oliver Strand was impressed with the "craft" that goes into each bowl of fast food udon, and gives you a progression of dishes to order  from first visit to becoming a regular. (Spoiler: the bukkake udon is "challenging".)

At Lunch Now: Five Guys on 34th is Now Open

When does this ever happen!?! A few weeks ago we reported that the new Five Guys on 34th St. btw. 8+9th would be opening on October 2nd, and what do you know… it’s open. Thanks to Lunch’er Vivien for the heads up.

I Still Think Five Guys is Awesome, But I’ll Try Not to Compare it to In N Out Burger

50% off Meze Grill: I wasn't such a huge fan of Meze Grill (on 8th Ave. btw. 55+56th) when it opened back in August of last year, but we're hearing that they've improved things a lot since then. And with this email deal you can get $10 worth of food for just $5. I guess we can try it again...

It’s No Vietnam, But Golden City Will Do In a Pinch

IMG_0059

Around the end of the year, I’ve got an Asia trip planned. Over two and a half weeks, we’ll be visiting Vietnam, Hong Kong and dropping into the Philippines for a couple days for a wedding. We’ll have friends guiding us through the Chinese and Filipino food options, but in Vietnam, we’ll be on our own. So, in the name of research, I plan to spend the next two months familiarizing myself with the cuisine as much as I can within the confines of New York. Y’know, for science.

We all know that there’s precious little Vietnamese food to be found in Midtown, but Golden City/V33 (33rd Street between 5th and 6th) has been a go to place for me for some time. Last year, Zach was shocked to hear about it when I wrote about the Vietnamese options there, but never had a chance to follow up. Lately, I’ve gone back to try out some of the other dishes on the menu.

Comme Ci, Comme Ça is Back in Action!

It seems like it’s been forever, but Chef Samir is fully recovered from his operation and the Comme Ci, Comme Ça Moroccan truck is back on 54th and Lexington today! He’s celebrating his return with free hot mango or mint tea. Don’t forget to try the delicious cigars and kofta sandwiches.

Glaze Brings Seattle Style Teriyaki to Midtown

We’ve never felt a lack of chicken teriyaki here in Midtown (after all, this is the home of Teriyaki Boy!) but apparently it’s nothing compared to the amount of teriyaki you can get in Seattle.  According to the New York Times it’s a huge deal out there, and Glaze Teriyaki is looking to spread that love to NYC.  Inspired by Seattle, and located on Lexington btw. 54+55th, Glaze plans on opening in the next few weeks (Eater got a shot of the plywood last week.)  We’re not exactly sure what makes Seattle teriyaki so much different than the versions we already have… but we look forward to finding out!
