All this week Shake Shack is holding their annual Shacktoberfest, with beers, sausages, and Bavarian inspired concretes (see the complete menu here.) Serious Eats: New York was there on opening day, and filed this drool inducing report.

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.
In addition to possessing a bounty of great bars with free snacks, 9th avenue is also home to the endlessly expanding Thai empire known as Yum Yum. What was once a single eatery has expanded to become Yum Yum 1, 2 and 3 –it’s tentacles spreading like an octopus between 45th Street to 46th Street (not that there is anything wrong with that…mmmm grilled octopus.) When I learned that along with tasty Thai they had food and drink specials I had to check them out.

In case you haven’t checked your calendar, today’s October 1st and there’s a new line up of custard flavors at the Shake Shack (on 8th Ave. and 44th) including Pumpkin Pie, S’mores, Orange Fennel, Coconut Caramel, Concord Grape, Apple Cinnamon Raisin, and Shackenstein (it’s almost worth it to come into midtown on a Sunday just to find out what Shackenstein, is…almost). And I just noticed via Shack Shack’s official Facebook Page that Shacktoberfest is back at every Shack location from 10/1 until 10/10.
International Chinese Culinary Competition Finals Are Today: Just a heads up, the final round of in the International Chinese Culinary Competition are happening right now at 47th St between Broadway and 7th Ave, and will last until 8pm. Food is only for ticket holders, and the weather is horrid, but I guess it's kind of fun? The good folks at Serious Eats have a more in-depth look here.

Ever since I was a kid, the street festival Italian sausage has been a summer tradition for me. Yes, it’s overpriced, yes the fests all end up being sock-sellers and dorm room poster, but there’s something about a hot Italian sausage with hot and sweet peppers on a crusty bun that takes me back to my New York childhood.
Somehow this summer, I didn’t manage to have one at all and as the last week or so has proven, summer is definitely over. Then I noticed that halal carts all over town have started selling Italian sausages. (Well, maybe they were there all along… but it’s only recently that I noticed the signs!) I was intrigued. Halal and pork don’t typically mix, but I wouldn’t tell if they wouldn’t.

Wow, the hits just keep coming to Flatiron. Eataly, Hill Country Chicken, FoodParc and now, as mentioned last week, a food court at Madison Square Park’s annual marketplace. Dubbed the Mad. Sq. Mark’t by those space saving marketers, the food market draws from some of the better small restaurants around town, both local and a few that came in from Brooklyn.
There’s a lot there and a ton to be excited for except for one thing: The weather. It’s rained pretty much every day this week making for slow business for the vendors, but affording us the chance to get a better look at the various stalls without a crush of hungry shoppers looking for a bite.
On Wednesday when we told you about that Miss Softee contest we briefly mentioned that ice cream trucks are starting to pack it in for the season (the unofficial end date is 10/31). But Kelvin Slush (our new favorite truck since the Vendy Awards) says they’re not so sure what they’re going to do. From one of the owners: “We have a full year license, [so] our plan is to simply stay open as long as it makes sense. If people are still buying, we will get a space heater for the truck and stay open all winter. If no one is buying and we’re wasting our time every day then we’ll close down and re-open in the spring (or maybe pick and choose really sunny days and/or special events to open for).” He added “7-11 says that Winnipeg, Manitoba … which is freezing in the winter … is the Slurpee capital of the world and they sell more Slurpees in Michigan in the winter than Florida in the summer.” Would you drink one of these things in the winter? We’re leaning towards yes (especially if you could throw some moonshine in there.)
