Tadka Indian (53rd btw. 2+3rd) has been mentioned several times in the comments, forums, Lunch’er profiles, and links over the years as a place for a decent Indian fix in upper Midtown East. While we never got around to a full review, it’s always sad to see good places go out of business. Luckily, its (slightly more expensive) sister restaurant, Chola, is still in business (58th btw. 2+3) so we’re not completely out of luck. Here’s hoping something amazing comes in to fill the void!
It’s hard not to notice the taunts of Blarney Stone‘s many chalkboards with their daily specials every time you walk by. I’ve been there for drinks after work but have never had any their food. Of course I’ve been wanting to try their burgers and sandwiches but I just never seem to make it over during lunch time. So finally one day with only 30 mins for lunch, I dashed across the streets and into the pub. With everyone in front of me getting either sandwiches or burgers, I was ready to follow suit. But when it was my turn to place the order, I couldn’t help but go with an old favorite…

Taim is on 40th & 6th, Luke's Lobster is on 46th & Mad, Coolhaus is on 38th & 6th, Bian Dang is on 53rd, Eddie's is on 47th & Lex, Gorilla Cheese is still looking for parking, and Sweetery is at different spots all day giving away free sweets with Lord & Taylor (right now they're on 42nd btw. 5+6th until 12:15pm.)

Big stuff going on a Glaze Teriyaki today (on Lex btw. 54+55th.) Starting today (and going through Christmas) they are going to be selling their miso Soup for $3.50 and 100% of all proceeds will be going to help provide healthy and nutritious snacks to underprivileged kids in Bed Stuy at PS 335. But wait, there’s more. It was one year ago today that Glaze Teriyaki opened their doors, so to celebrate their first anniversary one lucky customer is going to walk away with free teriyaki for a year…

Seems like it’s been all Level Up all the time for the past week, but when free food is involved we pay attention. We’ve seen freebies from Guy & Gallard and City Sandwich, plus that $20 lunch credit deal yesterday. Today it’s Eddie’s Pizza Truck’s turn. The truck is scheduled to park at Lexington and 47th Street and all you have to do to get a $10 credit for free lunch is to install and register with the Level Up app on your Iphone or Android. Blondie went on a dessert spree at Dominique Ansel Bakery in SoHo, Brownie wrote about the Bushwick Campus Greenhouse project that the former Miss Softee is working on, Brian listed some of his favorite street food in town, Donny discovered lebkuchen, a German dessert at Leckerlee, Chris found five star soondubu at Virginia’s Lighthouse Tofu, Rachel ate garlic-yuzu kosho lamb chops at Japanese Grill and I started a new photo project for Nona Brooklyn called Food/Work.
Elsewhere in the ML universe… Zach had sausage and beer for lunch in LA, Jamie tasted award-winning meatballs in Philly and Andrea gave a first look in the Financial District’s new Korean fusion spot, Kortako.

It seems like everybody’s favorite wafel truck finally has a little competition. Yesterday I spotted the Real Good Truck parked in Downtown Brooklyn serving wafflewiches (waffles as sandwiches). That’s right wafflewiches! Take a waffle, fold in half and fill it with stuff like a jalapeno cheddarwurst or a beef burger or chicken karaage- the one I’m most excited to try. Want fries with that? Well they got, of course, waffle fries. Check out their site for the rest of the menu. They’ve been spending all their time in Brooklyn but the owner of the truck said they have plans to come to Midtown some time next week.

For anyone that has eaten from many different Halal carts know that not all carts serve the same hot sauce. I mean it’s hot sauce but not all of them are actually hot. Some may just give you a slight kick in the throat while some will burn your face off. So far I haven’t found a hot sauce that really kicked my ass, until now.

Get $20 of Lunch Credit on LevelUp for Just $10: The new virtual wallet app, LevelUp, has been mentioned on ML several times in the past few weeks, and now you can get $20 of credit for $10 via Signpost. Several of our ML favorites seem to be adopting the technology, including Bian Dang and Schnitzel & Things (and we're hearing tomorrow there might be a deal w/ Eddie's Pizza Truck), so this may very well be the wave of the Midtown Lunch future.
